Public broadcasting funding cuts could impact Baton Rouge's WRKF

Yahoo25-03-2025

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Federal funding cuts threaten to impact public broadcasting nationwide, including Baton Rouge's WRKF, a non-commercial public FM radio station that has served the community for more than 40 years.
General Manager Paul Maassen said WRKF receives approximately 8% of its budget—around $150,000 annually—from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). This money is primarily allocated to local programming.
'It enables us to hire people. It enables us to buy equipment,' Maassen said.
According to Maassen's March 17 letter to listeners, WRKF's funding primarily comes from donations and local business support. However, CPB funding remains critical for the station's ability to provide 'trusted local and national journalism, cultural programs, and vital emergency alert messaging' to South Louisiana.
Several developments have heightened concerns over the future of public broadcasting:
Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) introduced the 'No Propaganda Act' last month, which would eliminate federal funding for NPR and PBS. During his speech on the Senate floor, Kennedy accused NPR of having an ideological, 'left-of-center' bias.
FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr announced an investigation into NPR and PBS underwriting.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) called for a congressional hearing on NPR and PBS funding.
The Department of Defense recently revoked NPR's Pentagon press office access.
'They can go exist on their own if they want to, but I do want to defund them,' Kennedy said.
Maassen emphasized that most of WRKF's programming is locally produced, not directly tied to NPR's national content. However, he noted that eliminating CPB funding would significantly harm local programming, which he described as 'the most expensive thing we produce.'
'We're constantly adjusting how we operate and what we do,' he said.
Trump turns up the heat on public broadcasters
While some lawmakers claim NPR promotes a particular agenda, media bias charts from Ad Fontes Media and AllSides offer a more nuanced perspective:
Ad Fontes Media's Bias Chart rates NPR's website in the 'Middle' category of bias, with its content considered 'Reliable, Analysis/Fact Reporting.'
AllSides Media Bias Company scores NPR's Opinion section as 'Lean Left' but maintains that NPR's news coverage remains mostly unbiased.
Some news earlier this month could be a sigh of relief for public broadcasting in the short term. Congress recently approved a Continuing Resolution that provides $535 million in CPB funding for 2027, according to CPB CEO Patricia Harrison. In a press release, Harrison said the funding will allow CPB to 'continue to prioritize educational content and resources for families, provide essential local reporting and public safety information, and pursue technology advancements that enhance public media's connection with audiences across multiple platforms.'
Maassen said he hopes the funding approval indicates continued federal support for public broadcasting, allowing WRKF to provide quality radio for the next four decades.
'CPB funding is one of those vital tools that helps us be able to do that,' he said.Dear [Listener],
Many listeners have asked how recent efforts to cut federal funding for public radio might affect WRKF.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) distributes most of this funding and helps stations like ours with operations, programming, and infrastructure. While WRKF relies primarily on support from listeners and local businesses, CPB funding—8% of our budget—provides essential backing for the free, trusted local and national journalism, cultural programs, and vital emergency alert messaging that serve South Louisiana.
In recent weeks, several key developments have put federal support for public radio in question:
Sen. John Kennedy proposed a bill to eliminate public radio and TV funding.
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr launched an investigation into NPR and PBS underwriting.
The Department of Defense revoked NPR's Pentagon press office access.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene called for a congressional hearing on NPR and PBS funding.
These challenges highlight the importance of a strong strong public radio system sustained by both federal and local funding. Your support is essential. Public radio has never been more vital–or more vulnerable.
We'll continue to keep you informed as this situation unfolds. You can learn more about legislative efforts and policy developments that could impact NPR, PBS, and local stations like WRKF at Protect My Public Media.

Thank you for being part of the WRKF community.
Sincerely,

Steve Bannon Calls Musk ‘National Security Issue,' Says He 'May Be Here Illegally'

Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon seized an opportunity to air his grievances with Elon Musk amid the SpaceX founder's blowup with President Donald Trump. In a Friday interview with NPR, Bannon was asked about prior comments that Trump should cancel all government contracts with Musk. The tech mogul's companies, which include Tesla, SpaceX and artificial intelligence startup xAI, have been given billions in federal dollars over the years, according to The New York Times. 'I think we have as a country a national security issue here,' Bannon said Friday, adding that Musk has a reportedly 'massive drug problem' and a 'deep financial and business relationship' with China. The MAGA podcaster continued, 'And we know he's asked for private briefings of top secret information.' The Wall Street Journal reported in March that Musk had requested a Pentagon briefing on plans for a potential war with China. Trump told reporters at the time that Musk would not see the plans, citing his business ties to China as a conflict of interest. The formerly Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency, a team tasked with rooting out supposed fraud and waste within the federal government, has drawn scrutiny over its access to classified materials and the personal information of U.S. citizens. Bannon then doubled down on his call to investigate Musk's immigration status. 'You have someone whose legal status is in question,' he told NPR, adding that you 'can't deport people from all over the world' and 'leave a white South African, who may be here illegally, here.' Bannon, who pleaded guilty this year to scamming people who donated money towards building a wall at the U.S. Southern border, added, 'It's just not right.' The South African-born Musk is a naturalized U.S. citizen. Last year, The Washington Post reported that Musk was working illegally in the U.S. at the beginning of his career in the 1990s, though Musk denied the allegation. Bannon has never been Musk's biggest fan, previously calling him a 'parasitic illegal immigrant' and a 'truly evil guy.' Speaking to NPR on Friday, Bannon theorized about the root of Musk's falling out with Trump and added one more insult to the roster: an '11-year-old child.' 'He hasn't turned up any fraud,' Bannon said, criticizing Musk's efforts at DOGE. 'So there's been a lot of tension. And Elon Musk, like the 11-year-old child he is, didn't take it very well.' Measles resurgence highlights the toll of RFK Jr.'s anti-vaccine policies

After the U.S. surpassed 1,000 reported measles cases nationwide, it's clear the Trump administration is failing to protect our health and well-being. The measles outbreak in Texas is now the largest since 2000, when the country eliminated measles. And it's not yet over, threatening to make measles endemic in America again, where the risk of infection comes from within our country. Furthermore, two unvaccinated school-aged children in Texas died from measles, the first American children to die from the viral infection since 2003. Normally, a preventable infection causing avoidable deaths of children would lead to prompt government action. In 1991, I was a medical student with the U.S. Public Health Service in Philadelphia during a large measles outbreak. Over 1,000 people were infected, and nine children died. Government and public health leaders required home visits of infected children, mass immunization, education efforts and even court-mandated vaccinations. The outbreak was stopped. In Dec. 2014, a measles outbreak began at Disneyland and spread in communities with low vaccination rates. Public health action stopped this large outbreak at 125 cases. To prevent further outbreaks in California, I authored Senate Bill 277, which eliminated non-medical exemptions for school vaccines. And with further U.S. measles outbreaks in 2019, I authored Senate Bill 276 to crack down on fraudulent medical exemptions. These laws — championed by California parents demanding safe schools for children — raised statewide vaccination rates and shielded our communities. As Congress waits, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is dismantling decades of public health achievement that will make America sicker. Kennedy reduced vaccine outreach, removed key public health officials, spread disinformation from his official post and suppressed data while elevating conspiracy theorists to top positions. Kennedy and the Department of Government Efficiency fired a quarter of Health and Human Services staff, gutting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institutes of Health teams vital to outbreak response. He installed anti-vaccine extremists as advisors, including David Grier, a discredited researcher disciplined for unethical experiments on children with autism, to 'research' if vaccines cause autism, despite decades of research debunking this myth. The CDC has been muzzled: An analysis showing high rates of measles in low vaccination areas was suppressed, and dozens of Texas vaccination clinics were forced to close. When Kennedy dismantled the CDC's communication team, his former anti-vaccine organization, Children's Health Defense, filled the void with disinformation by publishing a fake CDC-branded vaccine 'safety' website that falsely linked vaccines to autism. The site mimicked official CDC design and branding, deliberately misleading the public. After news reports exposed the deception and forced the site's removal, no federal action has been taken to investigate or prosecute this unlawful impersonation of a federal agency. Furthermore, Dr. Peter Marks, the nation's top vaccine regulator who led President Donald Trump's Operation Warp Speed, refused a demand for false data on brain swelling and death caused by the Measles-Mumps-Rubella vaccine, of which there are no credible cases. Kennedy forced him to resign. In his resignation letter, Marks wrote, 'it has become clear that truth and transparency are not desired by the secretary, but rather he wishes subservient confirmation of his misinformation and lies.' And what of the dead children from measles? Kennedy dismissed the first measles death, saying 'it's not unusual.' He blamed measles on poor nutrition, called vaccines a 'personal choice' that could cause 'adverse events' and claimed Vitamin A and cod liver oil treated measles. Subsequently, many Texas children hospitalized with measles also had Vitamin A toxicity. At his first Congressional hearing, Kennedy testified, 'I don't think people should be taking medical advice from me.' He then refused to answer whether he would vaccinate a child against polio. As Health and Human Services secretary, he cravenly refuses to save Americans in a public health crisis. How many children must get sick — and even die — before Congress demands that Kennedy and the Trump administration answer for these preventable deaths and the continued spread of a preventable disease? This flu season, as flu vaccination declined, 226 children died from influenza — the highest since the 2009-10 pandemic. Other preventable and deadly diseases, including polio and whooping cough, will also return when vaccination is hampered and discouraged. Our state has made progress in raising vaccination rates, but we are not immune to Kennedy's dangerous vaccine disinformation; California has communities with enough unvaccinated people to fuel a serious outbreak. Measles outbreaks in other states makes it imperative that California strengthen our public health defenses against sparks of infection. And California needs Congress to hold President Donald Trump and Kennedy accountable for not stopping preventable disease in America. Dr. Richard Pan is a pediatrician and former California state senator who authored landmark legislation to eliminate non-medical exemptions to school vaccination requirements in response to major measles outbreaks.

National Press Club Statement on Proposed Cuts to Public Media Funding

WASHINGTON, June 6, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Below is a statement from Mike Balsamo, president of the National Press Club, on efforts to cancel funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which helps fund NPR and PBS. "Public media is not a partisan issue. It is a public service. For decades, public media has delivered trusted journalism and essential community information to millions of Americans — especially in regions where no other independent news source exists. As local newsrooms close across the country, news deserts are expanding. In many rural areas and underserved communities, public media remains the only free, reliable source of local news. It connects citizens with essential information, whether during a hurricane evacuation, a public health emergency, or local civic coverage that holds government accountable. Democracy depends on an informed public. Public media plays an irreplaceable role in ensuring that Americans have access to the journalism they need to fully participate in civic life. Defunding public media would harm the very communities that rely on it most — and weaken our collective ability to stay informed. The National Press Club urges Congress to reject this shortsighted proposal and to protect public media as a vital pillar of American democracy and an essential service for all citizens." Founded in 1908, the National Press Club is the world's leading professional organization for journalists. With more than 2,500 members, the Club is a leading voice for press freedom in the U.S. and worldwide.
