The Brutalist is one of the biggest additions to Max in May 2025. Dropping roughly two weeks into the month on May 16, this marks the first time you can stream the Oscar-nominated drama for free as part of your subscription (it's also available to rent on other services such as Apple TV+ and Prime Video). Given its huge 215-minute runtime, you'll appreciate being able to take a break whenever you want.
There are also exciting Max Originals to watch. Pee Wee as Himself, releasing May 23, is a documentary following the life and career of late actor and comedian Paul Reubens.

Conan O'Brien Must Go, Season 2, meanwhile, releases on May 8, and sees the former late night TV host hang out in Spain with Javier Bardem, do the haka in New Zealand, and fly a full-sized passenger plane (OK, it's only a simulation).

HBO's ‘Harry Potter' series reportedly casts Harry, Ron, Hermione

The spell has been cast, and so too have Harry, Ron and Hermione in HBO's new 'Harry Potter' series. Dominic McLaughlin will sport the lightning bolt scar as the titular chosen wizard, while Arabella Stanton — who recently starred as Matilda in the West End's production of 'Matilda: The Musical' — and Alastair Stout will round out the trio as Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, respectively, Variety reports. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint were the first actors to play the magical roles, across eight films from 2001 to 2011. 'The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen,' showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director-executive producer Mark Mylod said in a statement to the outlet. 'We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned.' Variety reports that over 30,000 hopefuls tossed their sorting hats in the ring since the fall. Also recently announced were the castings of John Lithgow as Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. The Hollywood Reporter first broke news of the show, based on J.K. Rowling's hit children's fantasy books, in early 2021. The show is expected to debut next year, with filming slated for this summer. The network has already promised 'a faithful adaptation of the beloved 'Harry Potter' books.' In April 2023, Bloomberg reported that Warner Bros. Discovery was 'close to a deal' enabling them to adapt each of the seven books for the small screen. Rowling's name in recent years has been perhaps more entwined with her anti-transgender political views than the Hogwarts-set tale. ___ © 2025 New York Daily News. Rachel Brosnahan joins 'Presumed Innocent' Season 2

File Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | License Photo June 10 (UPI) -- Apple TV+ announced Tuesday that Rachel Brosnahan would star in a second season of Presumed Innocent. Brosnahan also will executive produce. Season 2 of the show is based on the Jo Murray novel Dissection of a Murder. Due in 2026, Dissection is about an attorney named Leila Reynolds defending a man accused of murdering a judge. Season 1 was based on the Scott Turow novel Presumed Innocent. It starred Jake Gyllenhaal as Rusty Sabitch, a lawyer on trial for the murder of a colleague with whom he was having an affair. Turow wrote two other novels about Sabitch and others about his lawyer Sandy Stern, who replaced with a different character on the show. Aside from the choice to adapt Murray's novel, Apple is keeping plot details secret. David E. Kelley remains a showrunner with Erica Lipez. Gyllenhaal and Turow remain executive producers. This summer, Brosnahan plays Lois Lane in the new Superman movie. She recently appeared in The Amateur and previously starred in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Manhattan.

Billy Joel tried to kill himself twice before realizing he could channel his sadness into music

Previously untold details of Billy Joel's life are revealed in the two-part documentary "Billy Joel: And So It Goes," which premiered last week and hits HBO in July. (Evan Agostini / Invision / Associated Press) Billy Joel's life is awash in revelations these days — some bad, some worse. Last month, the "Only the Good Die Young" singer-songwriter canceled all his upcoming concerts, revealing he was struggling with a brain disorder that causes a potentially reversible kind of dementia. Then last week, he divulged that he attempted suicide twice in his 20s after falling in love with his bandmate's wife and causing the downfall of the band itself. Advertisement Read more: Billy Joel cancels all of his upcoming shows after revealing brain disorder diagnosis "I felt very, very guilty about it. They had a child. I felt like a homewrecker,' Joel says (via People) in the first half of the two-part documentary "Billy Joel: And So It Goes," which premiered last Wednesday and hits HBO Max in July. 'I was just in love with a woman and I got punched in the nose, which I deserved." Joel said both he and his friend and Attila bandmate, Jon Small, were upset by what happened while Joel was living with Small and Small's then-wife, Elizabeth Weber. So upset that Attila — a Led Zeppelin-inspired metal band, according to the New York Times — broke up and Joel started boozing, which sent him into a tailspin. 'I had no place to live," Joel says in the documentary. "I was sleeping in laundromats, and I was depressed, I think to the point of almost being psychotic. So I figured, 'That's it. I don't want to live anymore.'" Advertisement He tried twice to end his life in the early 1970s, according to the documentary. First, he took the entire lot of sleeping pills that his sister, then a medical assistant, had given him to help him sleep. That put him in the hospital. She thought she had killed her brother. Joel says in the doc that he woke up in the hospital still suicidal, hoping to do it "right" the next time. His sister said he wound up drinking "lemon Pledge" furniture polish. That time, an unlikely person took him to the hospital: Small, his then-estranged best friend. Advertisement "Eventually," Small says in the documentary, "I forgave him." As for those impulses to harm himself, they wound up paying off for Joel after he checked out of a facility he had checked himself into after the second suicide attempt. Joel reconnected with Weber about a year after that, wrote about her in the 1973 song "Piano Man," and married her from then until 1982. Marriages to Christie Brinkley, Katie Lee and current wife Alexis Roderick would follow. Advertisement The first part of the documentary covers Joel's childhood and runs through his 1982 motorcycle accident, according to the New York Times. He doesn't meet his "Uptown Girl," Brinkley, until Part 2. Get notified when the biggest stories in Hollywood, culture and entertainment go live. Sign up for L.A. Times entertainment alerts.
