Help feed the hungry

The rising cost of living and increasing unemployment rate have left many struggling to afford basic necessities like food.
An empathetic group of women have formed the South Coast Food Drive, which operates from Umtentweni to Hibberdene, basically the Bendigo area.
Jenni Beatti from Hibberdene, Sandra Hammond from Sunwich Port, Maggi Sloan from Southport, Alida Lucas from Banana Beach and Memory Grace from Ifafa work together to help those in need – pensioners and households with children.
'It's impossible to feed the large number of people out there who need help. There is a never-ending need. There are few jobs available, and people move from the city to the South Coast, where there are even fewer opportunities,' said Memory.
Memory said they basically collect whatever the public donates and share it out among people who are financially stressed.
'Our target is to assist those who can't afford to pay rent and buy food. It's not the homeless people…we try to prevent them from becoming homeless. We assist with food, clothes, and anything else we receive.'
Here are their roles explained:
* Food Drive
Maggie has moved from Sea Park to Southport. However, she refuses to give up on assisting the Sea Park and Umtentweni community, so she will carry on with that. She's also taken on the Southport/Sunwich Port area, which means she's assisting from Melville to Umtentweni.
Maggie hands out food parcels to families every second week, where possible, in Sea Park, and once a month in Sunwich Port, depending on how much she receives. She feeds about 93 people and needs non-perishables, vegetables and toiletries for her food parcels. Contact her on 060 9365320.
* Soup Troopers
Some more good news is that Alida has volunteered to assist Maggie going forward. Alida makes soup for her Melville community twice a month. She will supply Maggie with soup for the Sunwich Port area. Till now, Alida has been providing the soup at her own cost. She is a pensioner, but can't sit idle. Alida needs support with soup ingredients. Contact her on 082 2989547.
* Clothes Drive
Sandra runs the clothes drive in Sunwich Port, and forwards money she receives for clothes to the food drive. She is always on the look out for clothing and shoes for children and adults (smaller sizes). Contact Sandra on 072 9929473.
* South Coast Charity Auction
To try to raise funds, Memory started the SC Charity Auction where she takes a commission on goods sold, which also goes towards assisting the community.
If the food drive is given something, which people on their list don't need, it is put on an online auction on WhatsApp. Contact Memory on 072 7611736
The Melville Sanctuary of Love will host a birthday picnic for the Bendigo Flower Kids for about 56 children from 33 families on Saturday, June 7. There will be presents, games and food. Any donations, toys and food are welcome, so they can start the day with homemade soup followed by sweets and cake, and then each family takes home a tub of vegetable breyani. If you can help, contact Di on 081 0492435.

Elon Musk's X crash-out: Could he be deported to South Africa?

The world's richest man – Pretoria-born billionaire Elon Musk – has crossed the world's most powerful man, US President Donald Trump, and the world is no doubt shocked at what is unfounding. Could the X founder – who has both US and Canadian citizenship – find himself being deported back to South Africa? Barely a week after Elon Musk left his official post as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the billionaire businessman found himself on the wrong side of President Donald Trump. In a back-and-forth, Trump admonished the world's richest man for criticising his tax legislation, the One Big Beautiful Bill. He later threatened to cut Elon's government contracts and insinuated that 'nobody wanted' his Tesla cars. Trump accused his former right-hand man of 'just going CRAZY'! Elon Musk, who largely funded Trump's presidential campaign, called out his 'ungrateful' and 'lying' former boss. He shadily posted on his X account: 'Trump has 3.5 years left as President. But I will be around for 40+ years'. But one of the biggest bombshells was his revelation that President Trump is named in the Epstein files, relating to government intelligence about convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Elon Musk's wild X posts and severed ties with President Trump have had many social media users wondering what will happen next. Some are predicting that Elon could have his US naturalised citizenship revoked and face deportation to South Africa. This could potentially be done through a process of denaturalisation. Elon Musk has leashed an X tirade against US President Donald Trump. One of his bold claims is that Trump is on the Epstein files. Image: Allison ROBBERT / AFP. According to law experts, denaturalisation occurs if officials can prove that citizenship was obtained unlawfully — typically through fraud, misrepresentation, or concealment of material facts. Elon boasts three citizenships – South Africa by birth, Canada through his maternal parentage, and the US as a naturalized citizen. He has repeatedly distanced himself from South Africa, claiming to be an American instead. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 . Elon Musk drops Donald Trump/Epstein files bomb

Elon Musk and Donald Trump had a rather public breakup on X today, and now it's gone even deeper. In a gobsmacking development on Thursday, Elon Musk has opened up an almighty can of worms involving the 45th and 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump. Tesla CEO Musk claims that Trump is in the Epstein files. The world's wealthiest and most powerful men are no longer besties, clearly. 'Without me, Trump would have lost the election,' Musk said on X. 'Such ingratitude.' Meanwhile, Tesla shares fell by 8% on Wall Street on Thursday following the spat. Tesla CEO Elon Musk listens as US President Donald Trump speaks to reporters in the Oval Office of the White House on 30 May 2025 in Washington, DC. Musk, who served as an adviser to Trump and led the Department of Government Efficiency, announced he would leave his role in the Trump administration to refocus on his businesses. Pros and cons of digital transformation in the developing world

Across the world, digital technologies are reshaping how people live, work and connect. From artificial intelligence (AI) to high-speed internet and digital platforms, this transformation offers great potential for economic growth and social progress. However, with that promise comes a critical challenge: ensuring that the digital future is equitable, sustainable and inclusive. Emerging technologies have already started driving significant gains and AI alone could add as much as $4.4 trillion (R78 trillion) annually to the global economy, according to the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report . Digital tools are helping small businesses tap into global markets, while fintech services and online platforms are enabling entrepreneurs to reach customers and capital more easily than ever. For micro, small and medium enterprises, the digital economy offers unprecedented opportunities for job creation and innovation – if they have access to skills training, financing, and reliable internet. In developing countries, digital infrastructure is offering a chance to surge ahead of traditional development paths. E-learning and e-commerce are opening doors in rural and under-served communities, creating new paths to prosperity and participation in the global economy. Internet access remains an issue However, the digital divide remains a concern. Over 2.6 billion people still lack internet access and many face barriers due to cost, lack of digital literacy and infrastructure challenges. This inequity leaves a lot of people without access to essential services, education and economic opportunities – threatening to widen rather than close global disparities. Additionally, the benefits of digitalisation are not evenly distributed. While some workers and industries gain from automation and AI, others face job displacement. Estimates suggest that AI-driven automation could create 11 million jobs globally while displacing nine million, with uneven impacts across regions and sectors. To manage this transition responsibly, governments, businesses and civil society must invest in education and social protections. Ensuring that the digital economy is dynamic and fair requires a concerted effort to build inclusive digital infrastructure and policy frameworks. As the world accelerates into a digital future, the choices made today will determine whether this transformation serves as a bridge to shared prosperity – or becomes a barrier that deepens existing divides.
