THE CANADIAN PRESS/Darryl Dyck VANCOUVER — The UFC is returning to Vancouver for an Oct. 18 Fight Night show at Rogers Arena. It will mark Vancouver's seventh UFC event since 2010, tying Toronto for the second-most UFC events in Canada (behind Montreal). The UFC's most recent visit to the city was UFC 289 in June 2023, drawing 17,628 fans and a $5.14-million live gate. The mixed martial arts promotion has held 35 shows across 11 cities in Canada, debuting with UFC 83 in Montreal in 2008. In other Canadian UFC news, flyweight Jamey-Lyn Horth of Squamish, B.C., has a new opponent in American Vanessa (Lil Monster) Demopoulos, replacing Czechia's Tereza Bledá, on the UFC's June 14 Fight Night card in Atlanta. Horth (7-2-0) is coming off a December loss to American Miranda (Fear The) Maverick, who is ranked 11th among 125-pound contenders. Horth is 2-2-0 in the UFC. Boots & Hearts Barn Burner Charity Hockey Game returns for 18th year

The 2024 Boots and Hearts Barn Burner event raised more than $408,000 for local charities. (CTV News/Rob Cooper) The Boots and Hearts Barn Burner charity hockey game will return to the Sadlon Arena in Barrie for a good cause this summer, marking its 18th year on the ice. Local celebrities, NHL and PWHL hockey players and retired hockey players will lace up their skates to raise money for local charities. The fundraiser has supported multiple local organizations over its 18-year history raising almost $2 million dollars in the process. Beneficiaries include the RVH Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, John Tavares Foundation's programs for kids, PIE Education, Rotary Club and more. Last year the event raised more than $408,000 for local causes. Organizers hope to surpass that milestone this year. The puck drops Wed., Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. Tickets start at $25 and are on sale now.

On Saturday, the 18-year-old Toronto native smashed the women's 400-metre freestyle world record, touching the wall in three minutes 54.18 seconds. McIntosh shaved the record by 1.20 seconds set by Australia's Ariarne Titmus (3:55.38) in 2023 at the world championships in Fukuoka, Japan. "Going into tonight I knew that my training had been strong the past couple months and I knew I was able to do something special, but I did not think I would be that fast," McIntosh, who shaved the record by 1.20 seconds, told CBC's Devin Heroux. "I'm always shooting to break records and push the boundaries of the sports, but overall I have to be happy with the best time. Those don't come by very often once you get to the top level of the sport," McIntosh told Heroux after the race.
