14 killed in Kyiv after Russian drone, missile attack

A Russian missile and drone barrage in Kyiv overnight Tuesday killed at least 14 people while they slept in their homes and wounded 99 others in one of the deadliest attacks on the Ukrainian capital in recent months, local officials said.
Russian drone strikes in the southern port city of Odesa also killed one and wounded 17 people, according to Oleh Kiper, head of the regional administration.
Kyiv City Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko said 14 people were killed and 99 others were injured in the attack, which hollowed out a nine-storey residential building and destroyed dozens of apartments. Emergency workers were at the scene to rescue people from under the rubble.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the attack "one of the most terrifying strikes on Kyiv' and said Russian forces fired more than 440 drones and 32 missiles at Ukraine overnight.

Russian President Vladimir Putin "is doing this simply because he can afford to continue the war. He wants the war to go on. It is troubling when the powerful of this world turn a blind eye to it,' Zelensky wrote.
The Kyiv City Military Administration said in a statement Tuesday that "the nature of the damage is direct hits on residential buildings. Rockets - from the upper floors to the basement.'
The attack lasted nearly nine hours and is the latest in a spate of mass drone and missile attacks on Kyiv. It occurred as world leaders convened at the Group of Seven meeting in Canada, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to attend. The summit runs through Tuesday.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko told reporters at the scene that a U.S. citizen was killed in the attack after suffering wounds from shrapnel. Explosions could be heard for hours throughout the night on Tuesday.
Thirty apartments were destroyed in a single residential block after it was struck by a ballistic missile, Klymenko said.

"We have 27 locations that were attacked by the enemy. We currently have over 2,000 people working there, rescuers, police, municipal services and doctors,' he told reporters at the scene of one of the attacks.
Olena Lapyshniak, 49, was shaken from the attack that nearly leveled her apartment building. She heard a whistling sound and then two explosions that blew out her windows and doors.
"It's horrible, it's scary, in one moment there is no life,' she said. "There's no military infrastructure here, nothing here, nothing. It's horrible when people just die at night.'
People were wounded in the city's Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi districts. Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said fires broke out in two other city districts as a result of falling debris from drones shot down by Ukrainian air defences.
Canada, which assumed the presidency of the G7 this year, invited Zelensky to the summit, where he is expected to hold one-on-one meetings with world leaders.

Zelensky was set to meet with US President Donald Trump in Canada on Tuesday, though the White House announced that Trump would return unexpectedly to Washington on Monday night instead of Tuesday night because of tensions in the Mideast.
Russia has launched a record number of drones and missiles in recent weeks. Moscow escalated attacks after Ukraine's Security Service agency staged an audacious operation targeting war planes in air bases deep inside Russian territory.
Little progress has emerged from direct peace talks held in Istanbul, with the exception of prisoner exchanges, expected to conclude next week, Zelensky said.

France shuts Israeli weapons booths at Paris Air Show

Geopolitical tensions roiled the opening of the Paris Air Show on Monday as French authorities sealed off Israeli weapons industry booths amid the conflicts in Iran and Gaza, a move that Israel condemned as "outrageous." The decision added drama to the major aerospace industry event, which was already under the shadow of last week's deadly crash of Air India's Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Black walls were installed around the stands of five Israeli defence firms at the trade fair in Le Bourget, an airfield on the outskirts of Paris. The booths displayed "offensive weapons" that could be used in Gaza — in violation of agreements with Israeli authorities, a French government source told AFP. A security personnel works to hide a graffiti reading "Behind these walls are the best defence systems used by many systems are protecting the state of Israel these days. The French government, in the name of discrimination is trying to hide them from you!," on a panel of the Israeli Pavillon during the 55th edition of the International Paris Air Show at the Paris豊e Bourget Airport. AFP The companies — Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), Rafael, Uvision, Elbit and Aeronautics — make drones and guided bombs and missiles. An Israeli exhibitor wrote a message in yellow chalk on one of the walls, saying the hidden defence systems "are protecting the state of Israel these days. The French government, in the name of discrimination is trying to hide them from you!" French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou defended the decision during a Monday press conference at the air show. "The French government's position was very simple: no offensive weapons at the arms exposition," he said. "Defensive weapons were perfectly acceptable," he added. Conflicts loom large Bayrou cited the ongoing conflict in Gaza as the rationale behind the ban. "Given the situation in Gaza... which is extremely serious from a humanitarian and security point of view, France was keen to make it clear that offensive weapons should not be present at this exposition," Bayrou said. Riot police officers patrol by the blocked Rafael stand and Israeli pavilions at the Paris Air Show. AP Israeli President Isaac Herzog said he was shocked by the "outrageous" closure of the pavilions and said the situation should be "immediately corrected." "Israeli companies have signed contracts with the organisers... it's like creating an Israeli ghetto," he said on French television channel LCI. The Israeli defence ministry said in a statement that the "outrageous and unprecedented decision reeks of policy-driven and commercial considerations." "The French are hiding behind supposedly political considerations to exclude Israeli offensive weapons from an international exhibition — weapons that compete with French industries," it said. Workers put a white canvas over a black wall that blocks the Israeli pavilions and that has been erected at the Paris Air Show. AP "This is particularly striking given Israeli technologies' impressive and precise performance in Iran." Israel launched surprise strikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites on Friday, killing top commanders and scientists, prompting Tehran to hit back with a barrage of missiles. Agence France-Presse

Trump urges Tehran evacuation as Iran-Israel conflict enters fifth day

Israel and Iran attacked each other for a fifth straight day on Tuesday, and US President Donald Trump urged Iranians to evacuate Tehran, citing what he said was the country's rejection of a deal to curb nuclear weapons development. Trump was due to leave the Group of Seven summit in Canada later on Monday, a day early, due to the Middle East situation, the White House said. Fox News reported he would convene his National Security Council. "Iran should have signed the 'deal' I told them to sign... Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. I said it over and over again! Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social media platform. French President Emmanuel Macron said Trump's early departure from the G7 was positive, given the immediate objective was to get Israel and Iran to agree to a ceasefire that the US had proposed. "There is an offer that has been made, especially to have a ceasefire and to initiate broader discussions. And I think this is a very good thing," Macron told reporters. "So now we need to see what the stakeholders will do." Iranian media reported explosions and heavy air defence fire in Tehran early on Tuesday. Air defences were activated also in Natanz, home to key nuclear installations 320 km away, the Asriran news website reported. A White House aide said it was not true that the US was attacking Iran. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth told Fox News that Trump was still aiming for a nuclear deal with Iran, while adding the US would defend its assets in the region. In Israel, air raid sirens wailed in Tel Aviv after midnight and an explosion was heard as Iranian missiles targeted the country again. Iranian officials reported 224 deaths, mostly civilians, in five days, while Israel said 24 civilians had been killed. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said nearly 3,000 Israelis had been evacuated due to damage from Iranian strikes. Sources told Reuters that Tehran had asked Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia to urge Trump to pressure Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to an immediate ceasefire. In return, Iran would show flexibility in nuclear negotiations, according to two Iranian and three regional sources. "If President Trump is genuine about diplomacy and interested in stopping this war, next steps are consequential," Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on X. "Israel must halt its aggression, and absent a total cessation of military aggression against us, our responses will continue." Netanyahu told reporters on Monday that Israel was committed to eliminating threats posed by Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes, adding, "If this can be achieved in another way - fine. But we gave it a 60-day chance." Speaking to Reuters on Friday, the first day of Israel's assault, Trump said he had given the Iranians 60 days to come to an agreement to halt uranium enrichment and that the time had expired with no deal. Iran says its nuclear programme is only for peaceful purposes. Oil prices rallied more than 2 per cent early in Asia on Tuesday after Trump's evacuation warning, reversing losses on Monday amid reports that Iran was seeking an end to hostilities.
