After 24 years away from Taiwanese dramas, Taiwanese screen legend and actor Chin Han is back on the small screen. He stars in Netflix series Forget You Not, which was directed by singer-actress Rene Liu.
The 79-year-old Chin is known for playing the romantic hero in hugely popular TV adaptations of famed author Chiung Yao's romantic novels in the 1980s. They include Lovers Under The Rain (1986), Deep Garden (1987) and One Side Of The Water (1988).
In his latest outing, Chin sheds his romantic leading man trappings to play an old man with dementia.
Golden Horse Award-winning Taiwanese actress Hsieh Ying-hsuan (Born For The Spotlight, 2024) plays his daughter, an aspiring stand-up comedienne named Le-le.
The series is now streaming on Netflix.
Liu, 55, and producer Aileen Lee, 53, told Taiwanese news outlet Central News Agency in an interview published on May 24 that many people around them thought it would be 'mission impossible' to get Chin to agree to star in the series.
He has cut down on acting in recent years. While he has starred in Chinese dramas such as Cambrian Period (2017), his last TV drama appearance was in 2020. And his last appearance in a Taiwanese series was in 2001, a period drama about Qing Dynasty emperor Qianlong.
Liu had tailor-made the role for Chin, though when she first approached him for a casual chat about it, she thought he would turn it down. He had told Liu then that he would not like to play a bedridden or forgetful old man.
Lee said: 'We were like, 'oh no', because the series will go into his character's deteriorating memory.'
But Chin was eventually convinced. And once he took on the role, he was fully committed to it, Liu said.
He asked for his hair to be messier and his clothes to look more crumpled, in an attempt to show the decline of his mind.
'People have seen how handsome and charming he was in his younger days, so they will feel more heartache when they see him in this role,' Liu added.

In a separate e-mail interview with Singapore's Chinese tabloid Shin Min Daily News earlier in May, Chin said he did not like to play sickly characters.
'To play someone sick is quite a painful process because you have to live with that mindset for months while filming is ongoing. I don't like to be unhappy,' he said.
But he agreed to do the series as Liu told him he would be playing a sea captain.
'I thought I'd have a chance to wear a suave white navy uniform, so I agreed. In the end, when we began filming, I realised the character is a chief engineer on a ship, so I didn't get to wear a uniform,' he said.
Still, he was glad to have taken on the challenge.
'My character seems so ordinary, but he loves his daughter with all his heart and is always quietly supporting her. I am rarely approached for such ordinary roles,' he added.

PHOTO: XIAOHONGSHU 'I have another 8 or 9 years to live': HK star Law Kar Ying battles cancer for 4th time HONG KONG – Veteran Hong Kong opera star and actor Law Kar Ying has been leading an active lifestyle in recent years. Despite his seemingly robust appearance, the 78-year-old revealed in a recent interview with Chinese media that he has been diagnosed with cancer for the fourth time. He is currently on tour in China with Hong Kong actress Athena Chu for a Cantonese stage play. Although Law said doctors estimate that he may have around eight years to live, the From Beijing With Love (1994) star added he is not fearful and has chosen to forgo chemotherapy and radiotherapy. 'I have another eight or nine years to live. Ninety years old is already a long life. What's the point of living longer? I'm not afraid at all,' he said. 'I won't undergo chemotherapy or radiotherapy. I want to be comfortable as I bid my friends goodbye.' When asked how he is dealing with the latest diagnosis, Law responded: 'You come (into this world) empty-handed and you'll leave empty-handed. I have no worries. That's life.' His positive attitude and outlook have impressed netizens, with many praising him for appreciating and making the most out of the present moment. Law, a member of the Hong Kong Celebrity Football Team, is married to Hong Kong actress Liza Wang, 77. He was first diagnosed with stage three liver cancer in 2004 and had to undergo surgery to remove part of his liver to save his life. With the support of Wang, he remained optimistic and ultimately overcame the disease. The couple later wed in the United States in 2009. In 2014, a routine medical check-up revealed a 2cm tumour in Law's liver, and he went for surgery to remove the tumour. In 2019, doctors found cancerous cells after a prostate biopsy. He underwent a prostatectomy, a procedure to remove part or all of the prostate gland, and was in remission after that. Man jumps into display of China's Terracotta Army

A worker at the museum told AFP on May 31 that the display was open as usual. PHOTO: MOKSIM SALEH Beijing - A domestic tourist climbed over a fence and jumped into a section of the world-famous display of China's Terracotta Army, damaging two ancient clay warriors, the authorities said on May 31. The 30-year-old was visiting the museum housing the Terracotta Army in the city of Xi'an on May 30 when he 'climbed over the guardrail and the protective net and jumped', public security officials said in a statement. The man surnamed Sun was found to 'suffer from mental illness' and the case is under investigation. He 'pushed and pulled' the clay warriors and two were 'damaged to varying degrees', the statement said. He was 'controlled' by security personnel. The pit he jumped into is up to 5.4m deep, according to the museum's website. Built around 209 BC to stand guard over the tomb of the first emperor, the 8,000-strong Terracotta Army is one of China's most important archaeological discoveries and considered a symbol of ancient Chinese artistic and military sophistication. A major tourist attraction in Xi'an, capital of the northern province of Shaanxi, it has been a Unesco world heritage site since 1987. May babies: Actress Grace Wong's daughter born in same month as her and husband

From now on, Hong Kong actress Grace Wong will be holding three birthday celebrations in the month of May. Wong, who turned 39 on May 5, announced on social media on May 29 the birth of her first child via natural delivery. Her non-celebrity husband Daniel Chang, also 39, was born on May 15. Wong wrote in Chinese: "I always thought I would be the kind of career woman who picked a date for a caesarean section and gave her baby formula milk. "But as I formed a relationship with my baby during the nine months of pregnancy, she seemed to tell me that I could do it. I did more research and wanted to give her the best within my capabilities." She thanked her doctor for giving her the confidence to change her choice of delivery method in the last four months of her pregnancy. "It really worked out in the end as our baby girl was born naturally," Wong wrote, revealing that her daughter's name is Audrey Chang. "She is very special as she arrived past 12am, so her birthday is next to her dad's birthday," she added. "I wonder if she will be a daddy's girl in the future." She thanked her husband for accompanying her throughout the journey and for being her biggest cheerleader, adding: "You're gonna be the best daddy." She also thanked the medical team at Hong Kong's Union Hospital. "We felt very loved and supported during our stay," she wrote in English. "Thanks for celebrating Danny's birthday and Mother's Day with me as well." Using hashtags such as #MayBabies, she added: "Off to a new season with our little one. We love you so much and can't wait to see you grow up." The first runner-up of the Miss Hong Kong pageant in 2007, Wong is best known for starring in the TVB martial arts drama A Fist Within Four Walls (2016). Her role as Fa Man was named Most Popular Female Character at the TVB Anniversary Awards in 2016. In 2016, she announced her engagement to Mr Chang, whom she had dated for 11 years. In 2017, they held two wedding ceremonies in the United States and Hong Kong. Wong announced in December 2021 that she was leaving TVB after 14 years with the Hong Kong broadcaster. She took part in Chinese dance survival show Great Dance Crew in 2022 and is also a singer now.
