He made a significant impact last season, scoring 14 goals and providing 11 assists across all competitions.
McCowan jokingly suggested that they would cease communication following Cameron's decision to join the Ibrox side.
He said: "I spoke to him when Dundee came to Celtic Park, maybe just after he'd done it.
"I said, 'Just to let you know, this will be the last time I speak to you!'.
"No, listen, Lyall is a good player.
"He's done well.
"If that's the move he's going to go and get it's a credit to himself because he's put a lot of hard work in."
Cameron was instrumental in securing Dundee's top-flight status, scoring twice on the final day of the Scottish Premiership season.
His excitement about his impending move to Rangers was evident in his post-match comments.
He said: "It's an unknown but it's a challenge and I'm really looking forward to going somewhere different and challenging myself at a higher level.
"I accept that I'm going from one of the smaller teams in the country to the biggest, so it's not going to be easy and I'm going to have to work hard for my spot in the team."

New Rangers sporting director Kevin Thelwell will take up his position on Monday morning at Ibrox, with a series of big decisions set to be made. Thelwell joins Rangers from Everton, just four days after a consortium led up by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises purchased the Ibrox club. Their arrival is expected to signal some major changes at the Glasgow club. Former boss Steven Gerrard came out of the running last week, with ex-Southampton head coach Russell Martin moving to odds-on favouritism over the weekend ahead of Davide Ancelotti, who remains available after leaving Real Madrid last month. Kevin Thelwell, left, takes up his role as Rangers sporting director on Monday. | Getty Images Rangers are also poised to make a significant move behind the scenes, with reports over the weekend claiming that technical director Nils Koppen will be removed from his position. Koppen was promoted to that role from director of recruitment just six months ago, but it is anticipated that the Belgian - who is credited with bringing the likes of Hamza Igamane, Jefte and Vaclav Cerny to Rangers - will be moved on by the new regime. There is already speculation that Dan Purdy, who worked alongside Thelwell at Everton, will replace him. Another summer of transition therefore awaits Rangers, who return to competitive action in the second round of the Champions League qualifiers on July 22. Premier League team target Rangers star Mohamed Diomande as part of sensational squad overhaul

Two of their star midfielders are leaving this summer RANGERS favourite Mohamed Diomande is reportedly on the radar of an EPL side as they look to make key additions to their squad. The Daily Express say that the 23-year-old could be in line for a sensational move from Ibrox to the Premier League just a year on from joining. Orel Mangala and Abdoulaye Doucoure are two that are set to depart the Merseyside outfit, with the Gers star considered an option to add some cover in that position and others. If he were to make the move he would arrive at Hill Dickinson Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, their new home since leaving Goodison Park at the close of the season. Scottish manager David Moyes led The Toffees to a 13th placed finish in last season's league competition. Advertisement The ex-Manchester United boss said after their final game at Goodison that the noise from fans was 'unbelievable' and that they have a big season of change ahead. He said: "It cries out as a club which is desperate for good times and things to celebrate. "If you look at the disappointments they've had over recent years this now looks like something everyone's looking forward to, a change of stadium. "If I'd turned up for today's game I'd have thought this was for us winning the championship or us being in a cup final, it was amazing. Advertisement "We have to try and put us on the map in some way, I'll try. "Let's be fair, we've had to try and pull the whole club up by the boot laces. Other people before me as well, other good managers. Liam Delap tipped to snub Man Utd and Chelsea for EVERTON transfer after fans spot gesture following match vs Toffees "We've now got ourselves really in a good position, finished the season really strongly, so I'm hoping we can take the same atmosphere we had today down to the new stadium. "But we'll need to perform the way we have done over the last few weeks." Advertisement Everton chiefs had to deal carefully in the transfer market after some unsuccessful moves but with a strong end to the season and good midtable finish, things are looking on the up again. Up in Scotland, a Diomande exit would surely not be the only one as the recently confirmed American takeover brings with it big changes including a cash injection and - eventually - a new manager. Reports also suggest that Robin Propper and Ridvan Yilmaz could both be on their way to their respective former clubs in a rebuild bid. Premier League side 'watching' Rangers' Mohamed Diomande

The 23-year-old is a key man for Gers and has grown into his role at the club since arriving from Nordsjælland in January 2024, initially on loan before making it permanent that summer. The Daily Express is now reporting the Toffees have identified the Ivory Coast international as one of several midfield targets for the summer window. Everton are looking to spend after a period of having to balance the books and David Moyes will be backed after his resurgence saw them finish 13th in the Premier League. Versatile Diomande is being looked at as one option. Rangers wouldn't want to sell but every player has a price and they would hope to make a significant profit in order to allow his departure. They paid £4.3m to sign him permanently a year ago. He finished the season with six goals and nine assists in all competitions, including a Europa League strike.
