South Africa wins ICC World Test Championship, ending 27-year trophy drought

South Africa defeated defending champions Australia by five wickets at Lord's on Saturday to win the 2023–25 ICC World Test Championship (WTC), securing their first major ICC title since 1998. Aiden Markram led the chase with a composed 136 as the Proteas reached the 282-run target on the fourth morning, ending a 27-year wait since their last global triumph at the 1998 ICC Knockout Trophy. Resuming the day on 213/2, South Africa needed just 69 more runs to seal the win. However, they suffered an early setback when Temba Bavuma fell in the third over, edging behind after adding only four runs to the overnight total. Bavuma's 66 from 134 deliveries had anchored the innings alongside Markram. Tristan Stubbs and David Bedingham followed, with Stubbs contributing eight runs before being dismissed by Mitchell Starc. Bedingham then shared a 35-run stand with Markram, pushing South Africa within six runs of victory when the centurion was finally dismissed by Josh Hazlewood. Markram's 207-ball knock, which featured 14 boundaries, proved decisive in breaking South Africa's long-standing title drought. Bedingham (20*) and wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne (6*) saw the team home without further loss. Australia had been bowled out for 207 in their second innings on day three, setting South Africa a fourth-innings target of 282. Starc top-scored with an unbeaten 58 from number nine, following a 72-run first innings by Beau Webster and 62 from Steve Smith. Kagiso Rabada starred with the ball, claiming 5-47 in Australia's first innings, where they managed 212. South Africa replied with just 138 in their first outing. Pat Cummins led Australia's bowling with 6-41, supported by Starc's two wickets, giving the Aussies a 74-run lead that ultimately proved insufficient. The result marked South Africa's first win in an ICC tournament final since their 1998 triumph, underlining their resurgence in red-ball cricket.

Akram praises his statue amid social media flak

Legendary Pakistan cricketer Wasim Akram saluted on Thursday the "effort" of the artist who created a statue of him that has spawned scorn on social media. The statue of Akram — one of the greatest left-arm fast bowlers to play the game — was installed outside the southwestern city of Hyderabad's Niaz Stadium in April. Akram is shown bowling wearing the kit of the 1999 World Cup team, when Pakistan were runners-up. Nearby is a statue of a tiger. One fan mocked the statue, saying: "The only thing that looks real is the ball," adding the face looked more like Hollywood hero Sylvester Stallone. The affable Akram, however, took to social media to praise the effort. "Lots of talk about my sculpture being erected at Niaz Stadium, Hyderabad. Mine is definitely better than the tiger," he posted on X. "It's the idea that matters. Credit to the creators, full marks for the effort and thanks to everyone involved." Australia has a history of placing statues of their iconic players outside their stadiums, while India unveiled one of master batter Sachin Tendulkar outside a stadium in Mumbai in 2023. Niaz stadium chief Shiraz Leghari told AFP: "The artist did his best effort, but accepts it doesn't resemble (Akram) a hundred percent." Akram is one of the country's most celebrated cricketers, having represented Pakistan in 104 Tests and 356 ODIs with 414 and 502 wickets respectively. He was the leading wicket-taker in the 1992 World Cup when Pakistan claimed the trophy. Mehidy Hasan Miraz to lead Bangladesh in ODIs Bangladesh on Thursday named Mehidy Hasan Miraz as the new captain of the ODI team, with the 27-year-old all-rounder succeeding Najmul Hossain Shanto in white ball cricket. Off-spinner Miraz will take up his post during Bangladesh's three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka, which begins in July, the Bangladesh Cricket Board said. "Captaining the national team is a dream come true... this is a proud moment for me and my family," he said, according to a statement quoted by the International Cricket Council (ICC). "I believe in this group — we have the skills and the mindset to play fearless cricket." Miraz, who has been skipper before for four ODIs as a stand in for Shanto, is ranked fourth in the world for ODI all-rounders, according to ICC rankings. Bangladesh will also play two Tests in Sri Lanka, with the first beginning in Galle on June 17 and the second in Colombo from June 25. Miraz will be the vice-captain for the Tests — with Shanto leading the team — as the next World Test Championship cycle begins. Pak pacer Khurram Shahzad to play for Worcestshire Pakistan's budding fast bowler Khurram Shahzad is set to join Worcestershire County Cricket Club in July for the remainder of the county season. The right-arm pacer will be available to play in all three formats for the Pears till the end of this season. Hailing from district Mandi Bahuddin of Punjab, 25-year-old Khurram is often compared to South African great Dale Steyn because of similarities in bowling action and his ability to swing the ball - he made his Test debut in 2023 and so far has claimed 20 wickets in six Tests, including career-best figures of 6 for 90 against Bangladesh. Reportedly, the former captain of Pakistan Azhar Ali played a pivotal role in the signing. Azhar Ali himself played for Worcestershire CCC in the 2022 & 2023 seasons where he briefly was part of the coaching staff too and has been instrumental in helping the club to sign cricketers from Pakistan. Previously, Pakistani leg spinner Usama Mir was also signed by Worcestershire CCC on Azhar's recommendations. In a statement released by the club, head Coach Alan Richardson welcomed the signing, praising Shahzad's skill and international experience. "Khurram is a fantastic signing for us," said Richardson. "His ability to swing the ball and bowl consistently above 80mph adds depth to our bowling attack. Just as importantly, his presence will be invaluable for the development of our younger bowlers."

WI announce revamped Test squad for Aus series

Photo: AFP/File The West Indies have unveiled a significantly revamped Test squad for their upcoming home series against Australia, marking the beginning of the 2025–2027 ICC World Test Championship cycle. Roston Chase, recently appointed Test captain and returning to the format for the first time since March 2023, will lead a youthful and restructured lineup. Notably, white-ball captain Shai Hope makes a comeback to the Test side, while his ODI deputy, Brandon King, has earned his maiden Test call-up. Veteran pacer Kemar Roach has been omitted from the squad, signaling a move toward building a new core. The top order has been strengthened with the return of opener John Campbell and the inclusion of 24-year-old Kevlon Anderson, who has been rewarded for his strong domestic form. Anderson impressed in the 2024/25 West Indies Championship, amassing 573 runs in 11 innings with three centuries, finishing third among the tournament's leading run-scorers. "I'm excited about the inclusion of young prospect Kevlon Anderson, who comes in after solid seasons in our domestic competitions to help provide stability in the top order, while the return of Shai Hope is welcomed given his consistency in white ball cricket," head coach Daren Sammy said. "Brandon King's inclusion fits a role we have identified that needs special focus to take our team to those closer to the top of the rankings," he added. The bowling attack also features new faces. Twenty-one-year-old Johann Layne joins the squad after claiming 63 wickets in 17 first-class matches. Anderson Phillip, who was part of the squad during the Pakistan tour, has earned his place again following a five-wicket haul for West Indies A against South Africa A. "The start of the Test Championship Cycle is critical to building positive momentum as we strive to work our way up the rankings. Beginning with a strong showing against a team like Australia would be ideal in our quest to bring West Indies back to the helm of Test Cricket," he said. "It was imperative that we sought to put a squad together that was well equipped, in both the batting and bowling departments, to manage the ebbs and flows of this format of the game, while possessing the ability to apply pressure in key phases, through disciplined, purposeful play," he added. Several players who were part of the recent Test tour to Pakistan have missed out, including Joshua Da Silva, Alick Athanaze, Kavem Hodge, Amir Jangoo, Gudakesh Motie, and Kevin Sinclair. For the unversed, the three-match Test series will commence on June 25 in Barbados. West Indies squad for Australia Tests: Roston Chase (Captain), Jomel Warrican (Vice Captain), Kevlon Anderson, Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell, Keacy Carty, Justin Greaves, Shai Hope, Tevin Imlach, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Johann Layne, Mikyle Louis, Anderson Phillip, Jayden Seales.
