Centre recognises IIT-H, NFTDC as Centres of Excellence

The Hindu5 days ago
The Centre has allotted two Centres of Excellence (CoEs) out of the seven announced for critical minerals research across the country to Telangana, thanks to the efforts of Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy.
In January this year, the Union Cabinet approved the 'National Critical Mineral Mission' with a budget of ₹16,300 crore, in addition to ₹18,000 crore to be mobilised from various PSUs. The mission aims to address the growing needs of sectors that rely on critical minerals. As part of the mission, the Ministry of Mines has recognised four IITs including IIT-H, and three Research & Development (R&D) centres including the Non-Ferrous Materials Technology Development Centre (NFTDC) in Hyderabad, as CoEs. They will function under the Ministry of Mines. These institutions will lead the research and technological development necessary to achieve the objectives of the National Critical Mineral Mission.
The seven Centres of Excellence will receive funding under government research schemes. Additionally, ₹500 crore will be allocated for R&D and another ₹500 crore for international R&D support from global collaborations.

Kiren Rijiju: New tax bill has essence of original bill

NEW DELHI: Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday addressed concerns about the new income tax bill, set to be introduced in Lok Sabha on Monday, stressing that it has incorporated all the amendments suggested by the select committee and accepted by the govt, maintaining the essence of the original bill. "The hard work done in the last six months and suggestions will be reflected in the new Income Tax Bill, 2025 which the finance minister will be introducing on Monday," Rijiju said. The minister said the apprehension being raised about the bill on social media are ill founded as the new bill will incorporate all the changes suggested by the select committee and which have been accepted by the govt. "This is normal parliamentary procedure when amendments in the bill already introduced are many," Rijiju said. In a statement, Union minister Rijiju said for any amendment to be made in a bill, a member of the House or the person who introduces the bill (in this case FM) has to move each amendment individually, and for that purpose, for each amendment he or she would have to first seek the Lok Sabha speaker's permission. "Thereafter, the amendment is moved for consideration by LS. Then on the House agreeing to the amendment, the amendment is to be considered again as part of the bill. Thus, for each amendment three motions are to be moved," the Union minister added.

Cut import, increase exports to become ‘vishwaguru': Gadkari

1 2 3 Nagpur: Without directly referring to the ongoing US tariff imposition, Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday said that reducing imports and boosting exports is the biggest patriotism today if India wants to become a 'vishwaguru'. Speaking during the Prof VG Bhide memorial lecture at VNIT, Gadkari stressed that science and technology hold solutions to the country's major problems under the present circumstances. "Knowledge is power. Duniya jhukti hai, jhukane wala chahiye (The world bows, you need someone to make it bow)," he said. "If our scientists and institutions work as per the needs of the country, then the rate of our growth and development will increase thrice. When our economic growth rate and export increases, I don't think we will need anyone's support. Today, those who are bullying others can do so because they are economically self-reliant, and technologically sound. But when we have better technology and resources, we wouldn't indulge in bullying others. Our tradition teaches welfare of the world 'vishwa kalyan'," he said. Paying tribute to Prof Bhide as a good teacher and researcher, Gadkari urged IITs and NITs to focus research on the needs of the nation and find solutions tailored for each state, district, and city. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo He cited how in Delhi, 80 lakh tonnes of garbage from four dumps was used to make roads. He emphasised the importance of ethics, economy, and ecology, adding that technology should be used in Swachh Bharat to create value from waste. Recalling a remark by former RSS chief late KS Sudarshan, Gadkari said the import of fossil fuels must end to curb global terrorism. India spends Rs 21 lakh crore annually on importing fossil fuels, but farmers can help reduce this dependency. He pointed to the rise in corn prices after ethanol production began — from Rs 1,800 per quintal (MSP) to Rs 2,800 — and said corn plantation has tripled. He also cited progress in bio-ethanol, isobutanol (as an alternative to diesel), and bio-aviation fuel from rice straw, with the govt financing marine engine production by Kirloskar. Calling for indigenous technology, Gadkari said Bhide's research remains a guiding light. He lamented that research centres have not worked enough on hyperlocal problems but praised VNIT's ongoing work. Sharing an example from Covid times, he said a unit to treat black fungus-related blindness was set up in Wardha after he intervened for licensing. Gadkari added that the New Education Policy has incorporated science with values and culture, and called for a futuristic vision, futuristic implementation, and a self-reliant society in the coming years. MoS unveils new biotech innovations, opens country's first animal stem cell biobank

Hyderabad: Union minister of state (Independent) for science and technology Dr Jitendra Singh on Saturday unveiled new technologies developed by city-based National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB), under the department of biotechnology's Biotechnology Research Innovation Council (BRIC) and inaugurated India's first animal stem cell biobank, a facility to store and preserve high-quality stem cells from various animal species, at its facility at Gachibowli. The biobank would provide quality-controlled animal stem cells and indigenous, cost-effective cell culture media to veterinary clinics, research institutions, hospitals, and industry. This first-of-its-kind resource would accelerate advances in veterinary medicine, regenerative therapies, and animal cell-based smart protein production, reducing dependence on imports and fostering the country's biomanufacturing capacity. "These field-ready and affordable innovations will improve animal health, increase livestock productivity, and protect farmers' livelihoods," Singh said, adding, "They will also strengthen our ability to combat zoonotic diseases, which cause nearly two-thirds of new and emerging infections globally, including Covid-19."
