UAE, USA sign Joint Statement of Intent to accelerate patent grant procedures

Emirates 24/72 days ago
The United Arab Emirates and the United States of America signed a Joint Statement of Intent aimed at launching a bilateral cooperation programme to accelerate patent granting procedures in the UAE. This took place on the sidelines of the 66th Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in Geneva.
According to the joint statement, signed by the Ministry of Economy and Tourism and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the programme provides collaborative mechanisms to recognise positive examination results issued by the USPTO for corresponding Emirati patent applications. This will be implemented in accordance with applicable national laws.
Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism, emphasised that this cooperation reflects the UAE's commitment to enhancing the competitiveness of its intellectual property ecosystem by adopting international best practices. In particular, the focus is on industrial property rights and the development of patent registration procedures that meet the aspirations of innovators and provide flexible and efficient services that support an innovation-driven and entrepreneurial environment. This effort reinforces the country's position as a regional hub for intellectual property rights protection.
He also highlighted that the partnership with the US side represents a new push to accelerate patent issuance by strengthening international cooperation and adopting advanced operational models. These measures aim to ensure faster and more efficient protection for inventors and entrepreneurs, thereby creating an encouraging environment for innovation and investment in knowledge- and technology-based sectors, and enhancing the UAE's readiness for a creativity-driven economic future.
This cooperation is part of the Ministry's broader efforts to develop the industrial property system, streamline procedures, and offer high-quality, flexible services to innovators in support of the country's business environment.

UAE millionaires allocate nearly 30% of portfolios to sustainable investments

Wealthy investors in the UAE have a strong preference to allocate their capital towards sustainable investments, aligning with the national government's climate goals and aspirations for a sustainable economy, according to Standard Chartered. UAE's high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) with assets under management of $1 million set aside nearly a third (27%) of their portfolios to sustainable investments, the highest percentage among eight markets surveyed globally by the bank. Nearly nine out of ten (87%) of the investors also said they are interested in transition investing, in line with the global average. The insights are based on the bank's survey of HNWIs across the UAE, Hong Kong, Mainland China, India, South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore. The current allocation trends indicate that investors in the UAE seek to align with the local government's objectives, particularly the Net Zero 2050 vision. It also indicates a shift towards low-carbon, future-focused investment strategies. What investors prefer Standard Chartered highlighted that investors in the country are attracted to certain investment themes that align with the UAE's energy diversification goals and climate commitments. They are particularly interested in green hydrogen, carbon markets, carbon capture and storage, indicating their preference for 'real economy solutions' to achieve a low-carbon future. 'The findings reaffirm the UAE's leadership in sustainable finance, with UAE high-net-worth investors allocating the highest share of their portfolios to transition investments across all surveyed markets,' said Rola Abu Manneh, CEO, UAE, Middle East and Pakistan, Standard Chartered. 'This growing momentum supports the country's Net Zero 2050 vision and reflects a broader shift towards low-carbon, future-focused investment strategies.' Trump says Fed's Powell will be out in 8 months, calls him 'numbskull'

US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is a "numbskull" who has kept interest rates too high, but he will be out in eight months, President Donald Trump said at a news conference on Tuesday. "I think he's done a bad job, but he's going to be out pretty soon anyway. In eight months, he'll be out," he said from a meeting at the White House with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Powell's term as Fed chair runs through May 15, and he has repeatedly said he will not leave the post early. Eight months run until mid-March, and it was not immediately clear why Trump picked that time frame. Trump has been hammering at Powell for months for not cutting rates and has frequently raised the possibility of ousting him, while also saying that firing him would be "unlikely." On Tuesday Trump repeated his view that the policy rate should be 3 percentage points lower than it is. The central bank's Federal Open Market Committee meets next week and is nearly universally expected to leave the policy rate in its current range of 4.25%-4.50% as policymakers wait to see how inflation and employment react to tariffs. "Our economy is so strong now, blowing through everything. We're setting records," Trump said. "But you know what? People aren't able to buy a house because this guy is a numbskull. He keeps the rates too high, and is probably doing it for political reasons." Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, at the same meeting, trained his sights on the Fed for its non-monetary operations, again calling for a big internal investigation. White House officials have recently raised questions about a $2.5 billion renovation of two Fed buildings in Washington which they say are inappropriately lavish. "The Fed has had big mission creep, and that's where a lot of the spending is going," Bessent said. "That's where, why they're building these new, or refurbishing these buildings, and I think they have got to stay in their lane." The Fed counters that the buildings had severe safety and efficiency shortcomings that needed to be addressed.
