Athlon Sports ranks Notre Dame defensive line as one of the best nationally
If Notre Dame has to rely a little more on its defense this season as it tries to get back to the College Football Playoff national championship game, that might not be such a bad thing.
The defensive line for the Fighting Irish should be stout, and it has been ranked as one of the best units in college football ahead of the 2025 season.
After lauding ND's secondary, Athlon Sports ranked the ND defensive line as sixth-best in the country.
This is a unit that dealt with several significant injuries throughout last season but still managed to play solid football all year, so it is expected to take the next step this fall under the tutelage of line coach Al Washington. While Jordan Botelho will be sidelined to start the season due to a pectoral injury, this is still a talented and deep unit.
Both Gabriel Rubio and Jason Onye are healthy again at tackle, and the Irish brought in Jared Dawson from Louisville to rotate in as well. Meanwhile, Bryce Young leads a deep group on the outside. Once Boubacar Traore gets completely healthy, he should be a pass-rushing force off the edge.
There may not be a returning player that has off the chart stats, but there is proven depth with a lot of high upside for several players. Washington has a deep rotation, which should serve the ND defense well in 2025 as Marcus Freeman and Co. look to pick up right where they left off from last season starting with the opener at Miami.

Tampa Bay gives Baker Mayfield big guarantee for 2026 season

Baker Mayfield has been living his best NFL life since signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a free agent in the 2023 offseason. After beating out Kyle Trask for the starting quarterback job that summer, Mayfield has become the franchise quarterback for the Buccaneers, leading them to the playoffs in each of the last two seasons. After taking Tampa Bay to the divisional round of the 2023 playoffs following a win over Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles, Mayfield signed a three-year $100 million deal to stay in Tampa Bay. However, his deal didn't include any guaranteed money in 2026 until now. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Buccaneers have reworked his deal to guarantee $30 million next year, which is scheduled to be the final year of his contract. Mayfield is now guaranteed to spend the 2026 season with the Bucs and is slated to be a free agent in 2027. But following two playoff appearances and a pair of Pro Bowl selections, the two sides will likely work out a contract extension next offseason to keep Mayfield in Tampa Bay to finish out his career. Mayfield's $33.3 million cap hit for 2025 ranks 19th among quarterbacks this season. As the former Oklahoma Heisman Trophy winner has had a resurgence to his career with the Buccaneers, he'll be in line for a significant raise in his next contract negotiations. ESPN proposes much-needed Indiana Fever trade deadline acquisition

As the WNBA's Aug. 7 trade deadline looms, ESPN shared moves it believes should be made throughout the league, including the Indiana Fever adding skill and scoring depth. In the article, ESPN proposes the Fever acquiring Dallas Wings forward Myisha Hines-Allen in exchange for center Damiris Dantas and a 2026 second-round pick. Here's what ESPN said about the proposed flip: After shooting 36% on 3s last season, split between the Mystics and Lynx, Hines-Allen is down to 30% this season. Since Hines-Allen is a career 35% shooter, improvement should be expected. Even that down season from Hines-Allen has been better beyond the arc than Dantas, shooting 26.5% (34% career but just 31% since 2021). As a third post behind starters Aliyah Boston and Natasha Howard, Hines-Allen should be an improvement. And with the Wings five games out of the eighth seed, getting anything in return would probably make this trade worth it. - Kevin Pelton, ESPN While Hines-Allen scored 7.8 points per game on 49.2% shooting from the field and 36% from 3-point territory last season in her combined stints with the Washington Mystics and Minnesota Lynx, she has taken a dip in those numbers this year as the eighth-year forward has shot just 46.7% from the field and 29.6% from 3-point territory for the lowly Wings. Given the Fever's need for another consistent scorer behind starters Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston with Caitlin Clark sidelined, Hines-Allen would be a significant improvement on the offensive end. Although Indiana has recently seen quality scoring depth off the bench from players like Lexie Hull, Sophie Cunningham, and Makayla Timpson, the team can ill-afford to be complacent as they make their second-half push towards the WNBA playoffs. As for who they would be giving up in the hypothetical transaction, the Fever send forward Damiris Dantas, who has served as a decent reserve player this season for Indiana. Despite missing time due to being named to Brazil's 2025 FIBA Women's AmeriCup roster this past June, Dantas has averaged 4.6 points per game on 33.3% shooting from the floor and 26.5% accuracy from long range in 20 games played.
