South Africa: Wetility and MultiChoice Innovation Fund light the way for solar business growth

Zawya14-05-2025

In a clear signal that local innovation, when properly supported, can scale rapidly and sustainably, solar fintech company, Wetility, is fast emerging as one of South Africa's most dynamic renewable energy companies. Backed in its early stages by the MultiChoice Innovation Fund (MIF), Wetility has fully repaid its loan well ahead of schedule, a rare milestone in the South African start-up landscape.
Wetility founders Ikenna Oguguo and Vincent Maposa
This success story underscores MIF's mission to empower black-owned businesses through early-stage, strategic support that enables real economic participation. Wetility stands out as a flagship success story of the MIF.
Wetility describes itself as a solar subscription service provider and offers bundled, customisable solar packages and fixed monthly subscriptions that help both residential and commercial customers go partially or fully off-grid. With early-stage venture debt funding from MIF, which is dedicated to unlocking high-potential South African entrepreneurship, Wetility was able to transform its vision of sustainable energy independence for everyone into a viable proof of concept.
'That initial proof of concept laid the foundation for Wetility's R930-million Series A raise in 2023,' says Ikenna Oguguo, co-founder and chief product officer of Wetility. 'We secured funding from a consortium, including Metier Sustainable Capital II, Sanlam, and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC).'
This calibre of backing is a strong signal of investor confidence in both Wetility's business model and the leadership behind it. It is not just a financial milestone – it's a powerful demonstration of how inclusive development finance can activate South Africa's entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Wetility, a black-owned tech startup in renewable energy South Africa offers five specialised product suites, each designed for a specific market segment. The Pace suite, Wetility's flagship residential product, launched in 2021. Between 2023 and 2024, the company released Lift for businesses, Rise for multi-unit complexes, and Luxe for informal retail stores like spaza shops.
To drive solar adoption and expand energy access, Wetility has reimagined solar financing for greater inclusion. All Wetility systems are offered via flexible monthly subscriptions, covering insurance, maintenance, and 24/7 support. Within informal markets, the Luxe product suite is available through a daily payment model, with credit extended in collaboration with a point-of-sale partner to overcome traditional banking barriers. Earlier this year, Wetility further expanded solar access through Flare, a new financing solution tailored to empower solar installers to deliver larger scale projects of up to 500kW, enough to power sizable business operations or hundreds of homes.
In a demonstration of the company's pursuit of innovative climate tech excellence to power AI-powered solar systems, Wetility recently launched AI Mode, a smart technology feature that boosts electricity savings from an average of up to 65% to as much as 90%. AI Mode uses real-time and historical usage as well as weather data to automate battery charging and discharging, drastically improving solar efficiency and backup readiness. Despite the advanced functionality, AI Mode is user-friendly and is accessible with the push of a button via the Wetility App, which allows customers to monitor and manage their solar performance through a single platform.
'We built AI Mode so our customers no longer have to choose between backup power and savings', said Oguguo. 'Operating quietly in the background, it makes real-time energy decisions faster and more accurately than any human could. The result is that families and businesses enjoy reliable power while unlocking greater energy savings–helping close the gap between energy security and economic opportunity.'
Since its launch in 2012, the MultiChoice Innovation Fund has supported a diverse portfolio of innovative ventures across sectors including fintech, healthtech, edutech, broadcast technology, and emerging digital media, creating over 1,000 jobs and empowering businesses where 60% are black female owned.
'The success of Wetility is exactly what the MultiChoice Innovation Fund was built for,' said Litlhare Moteetee-Murendo, head of Corporate Affairs at MultiChoice. 'We are proud to have supported them from early-stage ideation to investor-readiness and beyond. As a graduate of the fund, Wetility continues to forge a highly successful business in the energy and technology industries, we will continue to watch and cheer them on as they grow from strength to strength.'
The MultiChoice Innovation Fund combines financial backing, business support, supply chain access, and mentorship – a model that has proven effective in moving entrepreneurs from ideation to scale-up. It prioritises black-, women-, and youth-owned enterprises, aiming to drive real transformation in high-growth sectors critical to South Africa's future economy.
As Wetility expands its national footprint and increases energy access for thousands of South Africans, it also stands as a proof point for what is possible when innovation meets empowerment.

DFSA begins engagement with firms selected for its Tokenisation Regulatory Sandbox

The Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA), the independent regulator of the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), today announced the next phase of its Tokenisation Regulatory Sandbox, beginning engagement with firms selected to join its Innovation Testing Licence programme – the DFSA's regulatory sandbox that allows entities to test innovative financial products and services under a controlled environment. The DFSA continues to differentiate itself through initiatives that support innovation across the FinTech ecosystem. The Authority launched its Innovation Testing Licence in 2017, and remains focused on building an adaptive, forward-looking market that is aligned with the emerging needs of both traditional and non-traditional financial institutions, investors, and entrepreneurs. In 2021, the DFSA introduced its first-of-its-kind Investment Token regime to regulate tokens used as investment instruments, and implemented an enhanced Crypto Token regime in 2022 as a second-phase framework for classifying, recognising, and governing crypto tokens. This was followed in June 2024, when the DFSA further refined its approach with amendments – including streamlined token-recognition criteria and the first approvals of stablecoins – underscoring its commitment to adaptive, responsible innovation. Applying this strategy more broadly, the DFSA's Tokenisation Regulatory Sandbox, launched in March 2025, received 96 expressions of interest from across the United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, European Union, Canada, Singapore, and Hong Kong. The launch of the sandbox marks a major step forward in the DFSA's strategy to support responsible financial innovation within the DIFC and reflects its growing focus on tokenisation as a transformative force in financial services. The expression of interest process provided the DFSA with valuable insight into the diversity and maturity of tokenisation models being developed globally. Applications included proposals to tokenise financial assets and instruments, such as bonds (including Islamic bonds, or sukuk), units in a fund (including money market funds and property funds), and the trading and safe custody of those assets – reflecting the broad potential of tokenisation across the financial ecosystem. The initiative attracted strong interest from both established financial institutions wishing to explore tokenisation use cases and innovative start-ups looking to scale breakthrough digital asset solutions in a regulated environment. Speaking at the DFSA's Policy & Legal Roundtable, Charlotte Robins, Managing Director, Policy & Legal, said: 'The global interest in our Tokenisation Regulatory Sandbox signals the importance of, and growing appetite for, responsible innovation, and recognises the appeal of DFSA's regulatory approach to innovation. As a regulator, our role is to support innovation and its positive contribution to the financial markets in ways that maintain market integrity and protect the public interest within the DIFC. By working closely with local and global firms through the sandbox, we are encouraging responsible innovation and helping to ensure that new ideas are tested against regulatory expectations.' Following a detailed review, applicants were assessed based on their business model, clarity of use case, and readiness to test. Some firms were invited into the sandbox for live testing under the Innovation Testing Licence, while others were considered suitable for full authorisation under existing rules due to the maturity of their operations and experience in other regulated jurisdictions. The DFSA will now work with the firms selected for the Innovation Testing Licence to co-develop bespoke testing plans. Sandbox participants will begin trials within a controlled environment in the coming weeks. The outcomes from this cohort will help inform future regulatory policy and potential refinements to the DFSA's evolving digital assets and broader innovation frameworks. The DFSA's Tokenisation Regulatory Sandbox underscores the DFSA's commitment to enable innovation in a way that is responsible, informed, and aligned with global regulatory best practice – supporting the DIFC's position as a leading hub for digital finance, and aligning with Dubai's Economic Agenda D33, which aims to make Dubai one of the world's top four global financial hubs by 2033. African Energy Chamber (AEC): It's Time for the World Bank to End the Ban on Upstream Financing and Tackle Africa's Energy Poverty Crisis

The African Energy Chamber (AEC) ( is calling on the World Bank to end its ban on financing upstream oil and gas projects, urging the institution to align with Africa's urgent need to eradicate energy poverty and achieve sustainable development. Lifting this ban is essential to unlocking the continent's hydrocarbon resources, delivering reliable and affordable electricity to millions, and generating the revenues required to support Africa's long-term energy transition. While the AEC welcomes the World Bank's decision to review its 2017 ban on financing upstream oil and gas development, the time for reassessment is over. Decisive action is needed. Today, around 600 million Africans still lack access to electricity – a number that is not only staggering but growing. The International Energy Agency notes that gains made in expanding electricity access were reversed during the pandemic, with up to 30 million people who previously had access no longer able to afford it. This deepening energy poverty undermines Africa's industrialization, economic growth and social development. The AEC maintains that Africa must be empowered to grow its energy mix pragmatically, using both fossil fuels and renewables – not forced into an 'all or nothing' approach that risks leaving hundreds of millions in the dark. Natural gas offers a scalable, affordable and lower-carbon solution that can help meet the continent's immediate power needs while enabling a just, inclusive energy transition. Yet climate panic and fearmongering – often directed disproportionately at Africa, a continent responsible for just 3% of global CO₂ emissions – threaten to block this path. 'The green agenda and the World Bank's ban on upstream financing ignore the fact that natural gas can bring life-changing prosperity to Africa through jobs, business growth and monetization,' said NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC. 'We are proposing a logical, sustainable path: using our natural gas to meet current needs, generate revenue and fund our transition to renewables. Given that universal access to affordable, reliable electricity is one of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, the growing number of Africans without power is morally wrong and must not be ignored.' Upstream oil and gas development is already demonstrating its capacity to advance energy access. In Mozambique, domestic gas fuels the 450 MW Temane gas-to-power project, delivering electricity to communities and industries. Senegal's gas-to-power efforts, Nigeria's Gas Master Plan and Egypt's expanded gas-fired generation highlight how these resources are driving regional electrification and economic growth. Future upstream projects hold transformative potential: Mozambique's gas reserves could generate over $100 billion in revenue; Namibia's oil discoveries could deliver $3.5 billion annually at peak production, which can fund infrastructure, education, healthcare and clean energy investments. Meanwhile, global financial trends are shifting. Major banks, particularly in the U.S., are easing ESG-related restrictions and resuming oil and gas financing, recognizing that natural gas remains a vital bridge fuel. The World Bank must do the same – not as a concession, but as a commitment to its mandate to promote shared prosperity and reduce poverty. The AEC urges the World Bank to turn its policy review into meaningful action. Supporting upstream oil and gas development is not only an economic necessity – it is a moral imperative if we are serious about ending energy poverty and enabling a sustainable, equitable future for Africa.
