Maggie Warpus wins Winter Season MVP

CHENANGO FORKS, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – As we all know, Section IV, from East to West is scattered with high school talent, across all sports. When it comes to winter sports, one that's just as eye-catching as the next to watch in the area is basketball, and one local girl's basketball player won your vote for Winter Season MVP.
Maggie Warpus is a junior for the Chenango Forks Blue Devils wearing number 5. Across these past few years, she has stuck out with her talents on the court, and she caught the eye of many in winning MVP. She's a 1,000-point scorer that happened this past season, and she helped the team improve on their run at states from last season when they fell in regionals, this time making it all the way to the final four.
'Our whole community is very involved in our sports teams, especially now that our basketball team is so successful,' said Warpus.
She still has a year left to go on varsity, and so does most of the team, as they only graduate one in Lauren Paske. With the team being as young as they are, and the support that comes from the community each time they compete, whether it be regular season or playoffs, win or loss, it allowed the team to grow together, with Warpus leading the charge as they continue to push forward even further toward a state championship.
'I'm hoping to commit before next season so then that would be a weight lifted off my shoulders and it'll also make me confident going into the high school season.'
A big congratulations to Maggie on getting the people's recognition and being voted Winter Season MVP after an incredible run. 1,000 points and a run to final four is no easy task, and we can expect more from her and the team as we move forward into next season.

The can't-miss Denver Nuggets games next season

The Denver Nuggets return this fall with a revamped lineup sure to draw raucous crowds to Ball Arena. State of play: The NBA on Thursday released the 2025-26 schedule, with Denver and its talismanic center, Nikola Jokić, set to start the season against Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors in the Bay Area on Oct. 23. Denver's home opener is Oct. 25 against the Phoenix Suns. What we're watching: Five other matchups stand out. At Houston Rockets (Nov. 21). Denver will face a loaded Houston team with Kevin Durant fresh off his latest roster jump. Minnesota Timberwolves (Dec. 25). Few NBA superstars strike fear in Nuggets fans' hearts like guard Anthony Edwards — and Denver will look to stop him in this Christmas Day showdown. At Cleveland Cavaliers (Jan. 2). The Nuggets face what could be the East 's top dog in an early-season measuring stick. Los Angeles Lakers (Jan. 20). Denver's old nemesis visits Ball Arena, with high hopes for a quiet night from Luka Dončić. Oklahoma City Thunder (Feb. 1). It's the Nuggets first shot at redemption from last year's playoff series loss — and an MVP showcase between Jokić and last season's winner, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Astros Ace Tagged As Headlining Free Agent Starter This Offseason

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Houston Astros ace Framber Valdez is getting ready to hit the open market, and R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports projects that he could land a similar deal to left-hander Max Fried this winter. Fried received an eight-year $218 million deal with the New York Yankees last winter, and Valdez has been a reliable arm with Cy Young votes in four of his last five seasons. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 09: Framber Valdez #59 of the Houston Astros pitches during the first inning against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on August 09, 2025 in the Bronx borough of New York City. More Photo byValdez has thrown among the most innings pitched in the last five seasons, combined with a 2.97 ERA this season. The Astros' lefty has been one of the most effective and reliable arms in all of Major League Baseball. Valdez is also a two-time All-Star, and despite not winning any awards or statistical categories, he has received votes for MVP, along with the aforementioned Cy Young votes. Much like Fried, teams will be looking to land the consistent lefty on the open market, and he could be in line for a contract of $27 million annually. Valdez turns 32 in November and has been exceptional with keeping the ball in the yard, leading the league this season with a 0.5 HR/9. His ability to keep the ball on the ground has contributed to this, as during his career 62% of all batted balls were grounders. Fried may have held a higher pedigree than Valdez, but with him as the headliner, in the winter, teams will be enticed by a lefty that keeps the ball down and can strike out one batter an inning. Valdez is headed down the stretch to add another World Series title to his trophy case before reaching free agency.
