Bogey-free Brian Harman near top of another Open Championship
Harman, the 2023 Open champion and a four-time winner on the PGA Tour, moved to 8-under 134 following the bogey-free round on Friday. He birdied the first two holes as part of 3-under marks on the front and back sides.
"I think that places like this force you to be a little bit more creative. It's not so much of an aerial attack," Harman said. "There's probably 10 different types of clubs, irons, drivers, woods that you can hit off the tee. There's different ways to attack into the green, and there's almost always a hill that will kind of kill a shot coming into the green.
"I don't know, I just enjoy the creativity and trying to think your way around. You don't necessarily -- you're not forced to hit certain shots. You can kind of do it your own way."
Harman was heading back to the range when current Open leader Scottie Scheffler kicked off his round of 64 on Friday. He's the solo leader at 10-under with Matt Fitzpatrick one behind Scheffler in second place through 36 holes.
Harman enters the weekend tied with Haotong Li, who recorded consecutive rounds of 67. First-round co-leader Harris English (70 on Friday), Denmark's Rasmus Hojgaard (68), England's Tyrrell Hatton (69) and Scotland's Robert MacIntyre (66) all were part of the pileup tied for fifth place at 5 under that includes Scottish Open winner Chris Gotterup. He equaled Harmon with a second-round 65.
In 2023, Harman was lurking in the top 10 and largely under the radar. He'll be a prominent part of the storyline Saturday.
"I'll approach the weekend the same way," Harman said, recalling his victory at Hoylake. "The only thing I'm really worried about is the first tee ball tomorrow, and then I'll try to hit the next one up there close to the flag. If not, go to the second hole. It's a very boring approach that I take.
"I'm not trying to be heroic or do anything crazy. I know that I've got the game to do it, and it's just a matter of executing and staying in my own head."
Li said he didn't expect to be sitting in the top five through 36 holes and will "have to find a way to deal with" the pressure of playing in the final groups.
He's not entirely new to the concept after being paired with Tiger Woods and Jon Rahm in the 2019 Masters. As for this Open Championship, Li said the strategy and margin for error make it similar to every other marquee event.
"It's tough. Dealing with the wind all the time, firm conditions," Li said. "Every major is the same; it's just tough."

British Open champion Scheffler says comparisons with Tiger a bit silly
Agency: Portrush (Northern Ireland), Jul 21 (AP) Another comparison between Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler surfaced during the final round of the British Open. This one wasn't about numbers or trophies, but a fist pump. And it was for par. Scheffler only needed one hour to expand his four-shot lead to seven shots with a steady diet of fairways and greens at Royal Portrush on Sunday, along with three birdie putts. But he missed his tee shot on the par-3 sixth and his chip was weak, leaving him a 15-foot par putt. Scheffler fiercely pumped his fist when it dropped, evoking memories of Woods and his 15-shot win at Pebble Beach in the 2000 U.S. Open. Woods had a 12-foot par putt on the 16th hole of that final round, and it was the most emotion he showed all day when he made it. He wanted a clean card and wound up going his final 26 holes bogey-free. Woods was so utterly dominant his only competition came from himself. That's how it felt with Scheffler when he won the claret jug for the third leg of the career Grand Slam at Royal Portrush. Scheffler went 32 holes without a bogey until he took two shots to get out of a fairway bunker on No. 8 and made double bogey. Scheffler won for the fourth time this year and now has 20 victories worldwide. He has won 11 straight times with the 54-hole lead. The 29 year old from Texas was introduced as champion golfer of the year, a title the R&A has used for more than a century. Scheffler at this rate might be champion golfer of his generation. And to think he was slowed at the start of the year recovering from a puncture wound on his right hand from trying to cut ravioli with a wine glass. The year's top highlight still might be McIlroy winning the Masters amid tense drama to finally complete the Grand Slam. That was his third win of the season, following The Players Championship and Pebble Beach. McIlroy, however, sounded almost dismissive about them Sunday evening. 'I also had the three wins when Scottie wasn't quite on his game," he said. Also driving the comparisons with Woods are high praise from just about everyone who has had to face Scheffler since that first win in 2022. 'He is the bar that we're all trying to get to," McIlroy said. 'I don't think we thought the golfing world would see someone as dominant as Tiger come through so soon, and here's Scottie sort of taking that throne of dominance," Xander Schauffele said. Bhatia, Rai finish in Top-35 as Scheffler re-writes records to win maiden Open
Portrush (Northern Ireland), Jul 21 (PTI) Indian-American golfer Akshay Bhatia, who played all four Majors for the second straight year, achieved one of his best results in a Major as he finished tied 30th at the 153rd Open at Portrush. The 23-year-old shot a final round with a 2-under 69 that had four birdies against two bogeys. His rounds of 73-68-70-69 saw him total 4-under for the week. The Indo-British Aaron Rai, who was among the leaders after nine holes on the first day, ended tied 34th and showed consistency in making all four cuts at the Majors this year. It was his seventh straight cut in a Major and his third cut in four starts at the Open. Rai finished with 2-under 69 and his rounds of 69-72-71-69 saw him total 3-under. Meanwhile, American Scottie Scheffler completed a dominant week with a final round 3-under 68 to win The Open. It was Scheffler's fourth career major championship and second this year. He now has at least one each of three of the four — the one missing being the US Open — where he was tied 7th this year and has four Top-10s, including a runner-up in last five years. Scheffler's dominance at the Majors is so stark. In 20 Majors since the beginning of 2020, he has missed one, won four, been in Top-10 16 times, missed just one cut and been outside Top-25 only once. The Open was not played in 2020 and he did not play the US Open that year. The world No. 1 and FedExCup leader picked up his 17th PGA TOUR win in his 146th start at the age of 29 and retained the No. 1 spot in the FedExCup rankings. He has finished inside the top 25 in all 16 starts this season, with a season-high 13 top-10 finishes, including 11 straight. Scheffler became the 12th consecutive first-time Open Championship winner; Ernie Els in 2012 being the most recent multiple winner.
