Parliament Extends President's Rule In Manipur By 6 Months
Parliament on Tuesday approved a statutory resolution to extend President's Rule in Manipur for another six months beyond August 13.
The resolution, which was passed by the Lok Sabha last week, was approved by the Rajya Sabha, amid uproar by Opposition members over the issue of electoral rolls revision in Bihar.
As Opposition MPs continued their protests on SIR, Deputy Chairman Harivansh said it was a "constitutional obligation" to pass the resolution.
"It's a statutory resolution. All of us, as MPs, have to follow constitutional provisions. These have a time limit within which it has to be disposed of..." Harivansh said.
He then asked YSRCP member Subhash Chandra Bose Pilli to speak on the resolution. Opposition MPs however started raising slogans against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls exercise with TMP MPs raising slogans while standing next to the YSRCP member.
BJD MP Muzibulla Khan said, "When Manipur law and order situation was bad, Article 356 was imposed. Today, the situation of law and order in Odisha is bad..." "Double engine government in Manipur failed.... Has the situation improved after so many months of President's Rule or not? Minister should inform us... The Centre should take responsibility, removing an elected government and imposing President's Rule repeatedly is also not good," he said.
Moving the resolution for passage in the House, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said a rift was formed between two communities in Manipur due to a court order.
"A rift was created between two communities in Manipur due to an order of the High Court related to a dispute on reservations. Those who say it is religious violence are wrong..." Rai said amid continued uproar by Opposition MPs.
Rai also said Home Minister Amit Shah had undertaken a tour of violence- affected areas in Manipur. "He (Shah) met high level officials, security forces, civil society members..." Rai said, claiming that the northeast has witnessed widespread development under the Narendra Modi-led government.
He also said since the President's Rule was imposed in Manipur, only one incident of violence has been reported.
The Rajya Sabha later approved the resolution with a voice vote.
The House also passed another resolution by voice vote that sought to amend the Second Schedule to the Customs Tariff Act, 1975. The resolution was moved by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary.
Manipur was put under President's Rule in February this year after Chief Minister N Biren Singh stepped down, nearly two years after the ethnic conflict began in the state between the valley-based Meitei community and the hills-based Scheduled Tribe Kuki-Zo group of communities.

Trinamool Congress general secretary and party's leader in the Lok Sabha Abhishek Banerjee on Thursday (August 7, 2025) slammed the Election Commission (EC), accusing it of acting beyond its jurisdiction. 'They are going overboard. The EC also needs to understand that it is an impartial and unbiased organisation, and it has to operate while remaining within the ambit of the Constitution,' Mr. Banerjee told media persons while leaving for Delhi. 'Our officers have been sent notice that they have been suspended. Has election been declared? Under which laws are you sending notice and threatening to suspend and saying that that FIR should be registered. This will not happen. I won't allow punishment to the officers,' the Chief Minister said. She had accused the EC of working at the behest of the BJP. Mr. Banerjee, the Diamond Harbour MP, accused the EC of playing an 'active and shameless role' in denying legitimate voters their democratic rights. 'Now the EC has taken a shameless role to snatch the voting rights of genuine voters,' he alleged. Later in the day, Mr. Banerjee met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The Trinamool leader said his party wanted the House to function. 'We have sought a discussion on the special intensive revision (SIR). Our MPs have been giving adjournment motions for the past 4-5 days. They have demanded discussions, but the Centre is not allowing it. We have told the Speaker that if required, discuss with the Centre and then allow us to debate on the SIR,' he added.

YSRCP slams Naidu govt for neglecting weavers, breaking handloom promises
The YSRCP on Thursday accused the NDA-led Andhra Pradesh government of "neglecting" the handloom sector and "abandoning" key pre-poll promises, alleging that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's administration had "betrayed the weaver community and pushed them into distress." YSRCP leaders hit out at Naidu govt on National Handloom Day, accusing it of abandoning weavers and failing to act on key welfare promises made before polls.(CMO Andhra Pradesh-X) YSRCP leaders, including MLC Lella Appi Reddy, Surendra Babu, and Chillapalli Mohan Rao, said the government's inaction had deepened the crisis faced by weavers. This came after Naidu marked National Handloom Day with promises to support weavers and revive the handloom sector. "Naidu and his administration have betrayed weavers by abandoning election promises, leaving the community in crisis," the leaders alleged in a press release. Appi Reddy claimed that under the previous YSRCP government, benefits worth ₹3,700 crore were extended to the handloom sector, including ₹1.2 lakh each to 85,000 weaver families. He accused the NDA coalition of "making hollow and misleading promises". The YSRCP leaders criticised the current government for allegedly failing to implement schemes such as free electricity, GST relief, and health insurance for weavers, even after 14 months in power. He added that showrooms were also constructed during Jagan Mohan Reddy's tenure, unlike the 'symbolic gestures' from the current administration. The YSRCP demanded immediate fulfillment of promises made to weavers, warning that "continued neglect would deepen the crisis in the sector."

"Their Mistake": Tejashwi Yadav's Dig At Poll Body Over 2 EPIC Numbers
Patna: RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Wednesday charged the election authorities in Patna with faulting him for their "own mistake" by sending him a notice on having two EPIC numbers. The leader of the opposition in the Bihar Assembly also claimed that "a good reply" was being drafted for the notice which was sent last week. "I have received a notice not from the Election Commission but from the Patna district administration. A good reply is being drafted, and upon receipt, they would be left with nothing to say. They are trying to fault me for their own mistake. Whose lapse is it if two EPIC numbers have been issued in my name? After all, I have been casting my vote from only one place," said Yadav, the former deputy chief minister. Notably, he had conducted an online search of his EPIC number in the draft electoral rolls last week, which yielded the result: "No records found". Claiming that many other well-heeled persons, including senior bureaucrats, had their names struck off in the draft rolls published as part of the special intensive revision (SIR), Yadav had cast doubts on the efficacy of the exercise which, he has been alleging, was "an attempt to help the ruling BJP-led NDA in the upcoming assembly elections in the state". The district administration in Patna had come out with a rebuttal of Yadav's allegation, sharing a screenshot of a portion of the draft electoral rolls in which names and photographs of the RJD leader, as also his father Lalu Prasad, the RJD president, could be seen. However, Yadav stuck to his guns, charging the election authorities with "changing my EPIC number", even as the ruling NDA demanded that the RJD leader face trial for having two voter ID cards. The Patna district magistrate clarified that the EPIC number it had in its record was "the same as the one stated by the leader of the opposition in his own affidavit in the 2020 elections". Subsequently, the sub-divisional magistrate of Patna (Sadar), who is also the Electoral Registration Officer for Digha assembly constituency where Yadav and his family members are registered as voters, issued a letter asking the RJD leader to "hand over for thorough investigation" the voter ID card which was "not issued officially". The RJD leader spoke to journalists at the airport here, before leaving for Delhi to attend a meeting of the INDIA bloc at the residence of Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Regarding the meeting, he said, "We have many issues to discuss. The country is facing so many crises. The Donald Trump administration has unleashed a tariff offensive against the country, and the Narendra Modi government is maintaining a deafening silence." Alleging that the Prime Minister has become weak, Yadav claimed there is not even a whimper of protest over tariffs being raised to 50 per cent. Trump has claimed, at least 28 times, to have intervened and brought to a halt India's recent military conflict with Pakistan, and there is no repudiation, alleged the RJD leader. He added, "and despite such capitulation, these leaders will have the temerity to come to Bihar with boasts of being the Vishwa Guru". Yadav, who is the INDIA bloc's de facto chief ministerial candidate for the Bihar assembly polls, rubbished the suggestion that the NDA had stolen a march by holding its parliamentary party meeting a couple of days ago, which was addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "Seat-sharing is not something that is finalised inside the Parliament House," the RJD leader said. The second-term Raghopur MLA also made light of controversial former legislator Anant Singh's claim that he would make Yadav "use his deposit" if the JD(U), headed by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, fielded him against the RJD leader. Yadav replied sarcastically: "Our party spokesperson Bantu Singh is the right man to answer such a boast." Bantu Singh was once a close aide of Anant Singh, a gangster-turned-politician who has represented Mokama several times, on tickets of JD(U) as well as RJD, and also as an Independent. In 2020, he won the seat on a ticket of the RJD, which fielded his wife Neelam Devi when a conviction in a case led to his disqualification. However, Neelam Devi defected to NDA last year when Nitish Kumar snapped ties with the RJD and returned to the BJP-led coalition. Anant Singh, who has been acquitted by the Patna High Court, has declared his intention to contest the upcoming assembly polls, preferably on a JD(U) ticket, though the party has, so far, been non-committal on the issue.
