During the fourth all-India conference of the All-India Fisheries and Fish Workers Welfare Association (AIFFWF) here on August 6 and 7, a unanimous was decision to pressure the BJP government at the Centre to withdraw laws that paved the way to hand over the sea and coast, belonging to fisherfolk community, to corporate capitalists.
A. Hemalata, All India CITU president, addressing the cadre, said, by formulating policies in line with the interests of the corporates, the government had allowed the exploitation of natural gas and mineral resources within Indian waters, destroying marine wealth.
'This, in addition to destroying the natural resources, will seriously affect the fisherfolk community dependent on the sea and its resources,' she added.
Speaking about frequent and continuous arrests of Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy for alleged charges of crossing International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), she said the Union government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, should make efforts to bring a permanent solution between Sri Lankan and Indian fishermen.
G. Sukumaran, CITU State Secretary, said the financial assistance provided to fishermen should be increased. 'In cases when fishermen die while fishing, financial aid granted by both the State and Union government should be enhanced for the benefit of families,' he said.
Not just the arrests by neighbouring countries, but and also to safeguard their fishermen's over marine resources, a law should be formulated to protect their fishing rights, he said.
'As most of India's exports are from the fishing sector, only by creating a separate Ministry for fishing and its related issues, can the trade could be improved,' he observed.
The new national office-bearers were also elected at the conference. Ekram Hussein was elected as President, Pulluvila Stanley as General Secretary, and Mamta as Treasurer.

Hubballi: The third Vande Bharat Express train was welcomed with much fanfare at Hubballi station on Sunday evening. Many schoolchildren, train enthusiasts, and BJP workers, led by Union minister Pralhad Joshi, offered a grand welcome to the train. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Currently, the Dharwad-Bengaluru-Dharwad and Hubballi-Pune-Hubballi Vande Bharat trains are running through Hubballi station. For the section of Hubballi-Bengaluru, this is the second Vande Bharat train, and will go through districts like Haveri, Davanagere, Tumakuru. Addressing the occasion, Joshi said that Vande Bharat trains are a symbol of the country's development and these trains offer long journeys in the shortest time. "The Vande Bharat train, including its coaches and engine, is domestically manufactured. The production of these trains began in 2018, and their number has now surpassed 150, with 11 trains operating in Karnataka. Previously, train coaches and engines were imported from abroad," he noted. "Over the past 11 years, there have been revolutionary changes in the railway sector, with significant expansion of infrastructure. Currently, 30km of tracks are being laid daily. Until 2014, only about 45% of railway routes were electrified, but in the last 11 years, an additional 55% has been completed. In the state, 99% of routes have been electrified. There have been significant changes in the speed of goods train operations. Presently, the cost of freight transport in the country is around 12%, and by enhancing infrastructure such as loading, unloading, and building goods corridors, the cost is being reduced to 8%," he asserted. Approval has already been received for the detailed plan. Private entities have come forward to develop two ports along the coast as part of this project. Significant efforts are ongoing to initiate this project. "Land acquisition processes are hindering railway infrastructure and route planning. If these processes are expedited, significant changes can occur in the railway sector. Resolving land acquisition between Davanagere and Chitradurga and constructing the route would allow travel between Hubballi and Bengaluru in four-and-a-half hours," he mentioned. Sources in SWR said that the train inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bengaluru was given a grand welcome at many stations. "Responding to requests by the public at large, we stopped it at even halt stations like Heggere Halt near Tumakuru. Though it was not scheduled, it was stopped in Arsikere too. People offered puja and raised slogans in favour of the Railways and the PM," they added.

RTI activists push for wider scope, tougher action on info denials

Madurai: The Tamil Nadu RTI Activists' Movement held its state-level conference at the Tamukkam Convention Centre here on Sunday, passing 20 resolutions to strengthen the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005, and expand its scope. Former RTI chairman E M S Sudarshana Nachiyappan said exemptions for "sensitive information" had no place in today's information era. "The government should not withhold information when an RTI is filed," he said, citing how RTI had revealed ₹840 crore spent by the Prime Minister on official overseas tours. He noted that an RTI seeking details on China's reported occupation of 10,000 sq km of Indian territory was rejected on "sensitive information" grounds, despite the data being visible on GPS. Key resolutions included proactive disclosure under Section 4(1)(B) of the RTI Act, faster transfer of applications between departments, protecting applicants' personal details, and penalising public information officers who unlawfully deny requests. Activists also sought to bring private institutions providing essential services under the Act, hold monthly grievance redressal meetings at the district level, and live-stream information commission hearings. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Una strategia mirata per il tuo futuro finanziario eToro Click Here Undo The conference urged the state government to direct all cooperative societies to comply with RTI provisions, expand the online RTI portal to cover all public authorities, and publish annual information commission reports within a year of the financial year's end. They also called for appointing politically unbiased commissioners with integrity and legal expertise. Other demands included requiring first appellate authorities to conduct direct hearings to resolve most cases locally, handling complaints strictly under Section 18(1) instead of converting them into second appeals and giving priority hearings to senior citizens. As part of the event, activists filed 5,000 RTI applications across various state departments. Organiser Abdul said the resolutions aimed to make governance more transparent, curb misuse of "sensitive" exemptions, and uphold citizens' right to know in letter and spirit.
