New York Giants' Andrew Thomas 'getting better' as regular season nears

One of the big questions this summer for the New York Giants is whether All-Pro left tackle Andrew Thomas will be ready for the regular season opener on September 7 at Washington. Thomas was limited to just six games last season before having season-ending surgery to address a Lisfranc fracture in his right foot. He is currently on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list and has been doing light individual drills at training camp. With just eight practices scheduled between now and the beginning of the season, time is of the essence to get Thomas up to speed. On Sunday, during his Zoom conference with reporters, head coach Brian Daboll was asked if there is any chance Thomas would get on the practice field this week. "Getting better, so we'll take it day by day and see where we're at," Daboll said. "Each day he gets a little bit better, so we'll make that decision when we think it's best for us and him. . . He's on his rehab schedule and he's working hard to get back as quickly as he can." Thomas would have to come off PUP when the Giants set their 53-man roster at the August 26 deadline or spend the first six regular-season games on the sidelines. It's likely not going to come to that, but if they do add him to the active roster, they can ease him back in now that they have a viable backup plan. Rookie Marcus Mbow and veterans James Hudson III and Stone Forsythe are all new additions and upgrades from last season.
