Libya signs infrastructure deals with Egyptian firms to boost reconstruction - Markets & Companies
The first set of contracts was signed with Dr. Assem El-Gazzar, chairman of Neom for Real Estate Development, Trade, and Investment. These projects will focus on reconstruction in cities like Derna and Al-Bayda, which were devastated by Cyclone Daniel in September 2023.
These include developing Wadi Al-Naqa in Derna, which features 800 meters of retaining walls to enhance public safety and prevent landslides. The deals also cover the expansion and modernisation of the 62.5 km road linking the 10th Ring Bridge to Aqabat Al-Bakur, a key route connecting the mountains to the coast.
Projects for Al-Bayda include upgrades to the 22 km western entrance road and the completion of surface roads around the city's two main bridges. Infrastructure works in Derna will also see a new wastewater network and a power treatment plant to boost basic services.
Neom will also construct eight water culverts along Derna's Corniche Road to prevent flooding and improve rainwater drainage. Additionally, it will design and implement a new sewage network and treatment plant in Al-Bayda, with a capacity of 25,000 cubic meters to meet future demand.
In a second round of agreements, Eng. Belqasim Haftar signed additional contracts with Eng. Khaled Madi, chairman of Wadi El Nile for General Contracting. These aim to strengthen further road networks, bridges, and electricity infrastructure in key regions.
These projects include completing Phase 2 of the Al-Bakur Bridge and Road, implementing electrical works along the Tobruk–Emsaad Road, and surface works for the Al-Sement Bridge and Al-Tayyara Roundabout in Benghazi.

Egypt studies converting Helwan Iron into textile industries complex
Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel Al-Wazir has announced that the government is studying the conversion of the Helwan Iron and Steel Company into a major complex for textile industries and supporting industries for ready-made garments, with the aim of attracting foreign investments and boosting local value-added. Al-Wazir directed ministry officials to strengthen integration across industrial chains and deepen complementary industries for the garments sector, in order to reduce the import bill for production inputs. The announcement came during his visit to Technotex Factory, part of El-Nile Group, located in the Second Industrial Zone in 15th of May City. The facility, spanning 55,000 sqm, has an annual production capacity of 9.5 million pieces and a local component ratio of 35%. It exports 100% of its output, valued at EGP 3bn annually, to 12 international markets including the United States, Europe, and Turkey. The group currently employs 5,000 workers. During the visit, Al-Wazir inspected the production halls for shirts, trousers, packaging, the laser section, and the washing unit. He also reviewed the group's 2026 plan presented by factory director Walid Kamal, which targets raising production capacity to 14.7 million pieces annually, increasing the workforce to 8,000 employees, and expanding exports to EGP 4.7bn. The minister praised the factory's performance and emphasised the competitiveness of Egyptian ready-made garments in global markets. He underscored the sector's importance as a labour-intensive, energy-efficient industry in which Egypt enjoys a strong reputation, stressing that the country has all the ingredients to advance it — from raw material availability and skilled labour to advanced technology and knowledge.

Egypt exports 210,000 tonnes of food, agricultural products in one week
Egypt exported around 210,000 tonnes of food and agricultural products last week, according to a report by the General Organization for Export and Import Control (GOEIC) released by the National Food Safety Authority (NFSA). The shipments, totalling 3,400 consignments, were carried out by 1,220 companies. The consignments covered nearly 660 categories of food products, including molasses (black honey), vegetables, tubers, fruits, and processed food products. Vegetable exports reached 30,000 tonnes, led by sweet potatoes (11,000 tonnes), followed by mixed vegetables (5,000 tonnes) and onions (4,000 tonnes), across a total of 45 vegetable varieties. Fruit exports amounted to 26,000 tonnes, with strawberries (8,000 tonnes) topping the list, followed by mangoes (7,000 tonnes) and pomegranates (4,000 tonnes), across 30 varieties. Egyptian products reached 180 international markets, with Italy, India, the United States, and the United Kingdom among the top importers. In terms of export hubs, Alexandria Port ranked first with 520 consignments, followed by Safaga Port (510) and Cairo International Airport (437). To support the sector, the NFSA issued 1,000 health certificates for exports last week under the standardised mechanism adopted earlier this year, ensuring compliance with global safety requirements and strengthening confidence in Egyptian exports.
