Volvo Group, Daimler look to technology joint venture in bid to save costs
GOTHENBURG (Reuters) -European truckmaking rivals AB Volvo and Daimler Truck hope to cut costs and reduce reliance on suppliers by jointly developing a software-defined vehicle program, they said on Tuesday.
Fleets and truck manufacturers, like automakers, have been racing to produce technology-packed vehicles while also grappling with the need to reduce costs.
Truckmakers are currently heavily reliant on suppliers because their software is closely tied to hardware, but Daimler and Volvo's new business - called Coretura - aims to develop a software-defined vehicle platform and reduce that dependence.
The companies are looking to create an "industry standard", Daimler Trucks CEO Karin Radstrom told reporters.
"We're looking at how we can move from our current reality where we are very much dependent on our suppliers - which drives both cost and sometimes timelines - and instead looking at what's the next generation of software that we need to bring to the vehicle", Radstrom said.
The Gothenburg-based venture will employ 50 employees to start, with the hope of first deliveries of its connectivity platform in 2027 and further deliveries towards the end of the decade.
"Everything in the vehicle industry is very much oriented around software and controlled by software", said Johan Lunden, a Volvo veteran and the newly appointed CEO of Coretura.
Software will play an increasingly vital role in achieving sustainability, productivity, and safety targets in the future, he added.
While rivals, Volvo Group and Daimler have collaborated on various businesses in recent years, such as within charging and hydrogen fuel cell development.

Investment property portfolio to buoy IOIProp
PETALING JAYA: IOI Properties Group Bhd (IOIProp) is poised for an improvement in its earnings outlook beyond the financial year 2025 (FY25), driven by an expanding investment property portfolio and stable contributions from its property development segment. CIMB Securities Research, which initiated coverage on the stock, said the bright prospects of the property group has been underappreciated due to concerns over its elevated gearing. 'We view IOIProp as an undervalued structural growth story, underpinned by a 15.6% compounded annual growth rate in FY27 core earnings per share, driven by the expansion of its investment property portfolio and incremental earnings contribution from W Residences,' it noted. In addition, there are potential improvements in IOIProp's gearing from the monetisation of its investment properties via real estate investment trust (REIT) listings as well as improving earnings quality with resilient recurring income. Hence, the research house has pegged an 'add' rating on the stock with a target price of RM3.25 per share. The research house also believes that IOIProp stands to benefit from accelerated growth in property demand in Johor, driven by the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone or JS-SEZ, thanks to its landbank of over 3,000 acres in the state. Following the recent addition of new investment properties and the commencement of IOI Central Boulevard Towers or ICBT in Singapore in July 2024, IOIProp's earnings quality has improved markedly, with increased contributions from its recurring income assets. 'We also expect the ongoing acquisition of the remaining 50.1% stake in South Beach development for S$834.2mil (about RM2.75bil) to be earnings-accretive despite the potential rise in near-term gearing,' it added. CGS International Research (CGSI Research) has estimated IOIProp's earnings before income tax (Ebit) contributions from its property investment segment will rise meaningfully to 47% of the group Ebit by FY27 (from 24% in FY18), the highest among its Malaysia property coverage universe. 'This makes IOIProp less susceptible to fluctuations in property development earnings and narrows the deep discount to return on net asset value, in our view,' the research house noted. CGSI Research also said IOIProp has been reported to be exploring two REIT listings – one for its Malaysian assets worth RM7bil-RM8bil and another for Singapore-based assets worth S$7bil-S$8bil. 'Based on our assumptions of IOIProp retaining 50% controlling stakes in both REITs post their listings in FY27 to FY28, and a combined listing valuation of RM32.3bil, we project the group's net gearing to fall to about 0.36 times by end-FY28. 'This is a meaningful improvement from 0.97 times in a scenario without the monetisation.' CGSI Research also viewed the potential REIT listings as dual-impact, thereby unlocking value in the group's investment property portfolio, and serving as structural drivers in IOIProp's valuation.

Jordan to expand low-cost Europe flights from late August to promote tourism
AMMAN, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Jordan will resume and expand low-cost air links with Europe from late August in a push to revive a tourism industry hit by regional tensions, officials said on Sunday. Hungary's Wizz Air will restart its Budapest-Amman route on Aug. 26 with twice-weekly, year-round services, marking the gradual return of budget carriers to the kingdom. Tourism and Antiquities Minister Makram Al-Qaisi said on Sunday that the 2025/26 winter season will feature the largest network of low-cost flights to date, connecting Jordan with 18 European destinations via carriers including Ryanair, Wizz Air, and Eurowings. According to the minister, four new routes to the Red Sea port of Aqaba, namely from Katowice and Warsaw in Poland, Bucharest in Romania, and Sofia in Bulgaria, are expected to reinforce the city's role as a hub for beach and winter tourism. Jordan Tourism Board Director General Abdul Razzaq Arabiyat said winter services will ramp up from Sept. 16 and run through March 2026, with plans to extend into the summer season. The return of budget flights is part of wider promotions to draw visitors to Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, Aqaba, and other sites. Tourism revenue rose 11.9 percent in the first half of 2025 to about 3.67 billion U.S. dollars, official data showed.

Sun Bus aims to be leading player in Asean EV bus market
JOHOR BAHRU: Sun Bus Tech Sdn Bhd aims to be among Malaysia's top three bus manufacturers within five to 10 years and a leading player in the Asean electric vehicle (EV) bus market. Its chief executive officer, Shyan Phang, said the outlook for Malaysia's EV bus sector remains strong, driven by government plans to procure a further 1,100 units by 2030. 'At present, the EV bus market in Malaysia is fully dependent on government purchases. Last year's tender for 250 units has been concluded, and more orders are expected annually. This presents a big opportunity for local manufacturers,' she told Bernama. The Johor-based company has equipped its assembly facility with EV-specific infrastructure, including dual-gun direct-current fast chargers, portable chargers and special safety containers for battery storage. 'We also use Swiss technology for aluminium bus bodies, which are rust-resistant and can last 15 years to 20 years. The total life-cycle cost is lower than that of steel-bodied buses,' Phang said. Sun Bus Tech plans to expand its EV bus market to Japan, Indonesia and Thailand, with market visits starting this month. The company also works closely with chassis, battery and charger suppliers to improve efficiency, range and passenger capacity. However, Phang said challenges remain, including high acquisition costs, insufficient charging infrastructure and limited range for long-distance operations. 'For EV adoption to truly work here, infrastructure, policy and operator readiness must align. With continued government support, I am optimistic the industry will grow rapidly.' She acknowledged that the main challenges to EV adoption in the Asean region are high costs, limited charging infrastructure and range limitations that do not yet meet the needs of tour or charter bus operators. 'For the tourism bus segment, EV is still not practical. Charging infrastructure needs to be addressed first. But I am confident that with government support, the public EV bus market will continue to grow,' Phang said.
