Kerala HC extends protection from arrest for rapper Vedan in rape case
Last Updated:
Kochi, Aug 20 (PTI) The Kerala High Court on Wednesday extended until August 25 an interim order preventing police from arresting rapper Hirandas Murali, known as Vedan, who is facing rape charges.
Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas, who had earlier granted interim protection from arrest, extended the order while hearing Vedan's anticipatory bail plea.
The complainant, a doctor, has alleged that Vedan entered into a sexual relationship with her on the promise of marriage but later withdrew.
She has also accused him of sexually harassing her multiple times between 2021 and 2023.
Her counsel told the court that Vedan had faced similar complaints earlier and accused investigators of failing to present key evidence, including WhatsApp messages.
The lawyer also claimed Vedan celebrated his birthday publicly after police issued a lookout notice.
The judge observed that a promise of marriage by itself does not amount to a criminal offence and said Facebook posts cannot automatically be treated as evidence.
The court allowed the complainant time until August 25 to submit additional documents.
Thrikkakara police are investigating the case, and Vedan remains on anticipatory bail protection until the next hearing. PTI TBA TGB ROH

Shops set ablaze in UPs Bareilly over extortion demand; five booked
Last Updated: Bareilly (UP), Aug 21 (PTI) Two shops have been set on fire in this district of Uttar Pradesh after their owners allegedly refused to pay extortion money, police said on Thursday. According to officials, two FIRs have been registered against five people, including the members of a political family, in connection with the incident. Police said Shashank Verma and Mayank Verma, along with their associates, allegedly targeted Vishal Medical Store and Khatu Shyam Confectionery on Tuesday and Wednesday in Katra village. Devarniya Police Station's SHO Navdeep Singh said cases under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita have been lodged against Mayank Verma, Chetak, Mayank, the son of Girwar Dayal, Arpit, and Shashank Verma. In his complaint, shopkeeper Rajeev Kumar alleged that Shashank Verma came to his confectionery shop on Nainital Road around 9.45 pm on Tuesday, picked up some items and abused him when asked to clear pending dues. Police personnel at the scene intervened, and the matter was briefly settled. However, Shashank allegedly threatened to return with his brother, Mayank, the complainant stated. On Wednesday morning, Mayank Verma, Chetak, and others allegedly set the shop on fire, police said, adding Rajeev's brother Mukesh, who rushed to the spot, sustained head injuries after being allegedly attacked with sticks and knives when he tried to intervene. In a separate complaint, Pritam Singh, who runs Vishal Medical Store in the same locality, alleged that around 6.30 am on Tuesday, Mayank and Shashank Verma, accompanied by others, demanded Rs 5 lakh from him. When he refused, Mayank allegedly attacked him with a sharp weapon while Shashank opened fire from a country-made pistol, Singh claimed, adding the bullet narrowly missed his head. Villagers rushed to his aid, following which the accused fled. SHO Navdeep Singh said legal action is being taken against the accused who are absconding. Man murdered by wife, son in Faridabad
Last Updated: Faridabad, Aug 21 (PTI) A property dealer was allegedly murdered by his wife and son in Greater Faridabad, the police said on Thursday. According to the police, the man's wife, Sangeeta, and son, Sahil, stuffed his body in a sack and dumped it in a deserted place. The woman allegedly misled the extended family, saying that her husband was abroad and even sent text messages from his phone to relatives saying he had committed a crime. The deceased was identified as Harveer Singh Malik, a resident of Terra society in Sector 75 of Greater Faridabad, the police said, adding that he was reported missing on July 11. According to the complaint filed by the deceased's brother, Kulveer, the couple fought regularly over financial issues, and had a similar argument on July 10. 'My brother had kept Rs 7 lakh in the house for some work, but his son, Sahil, and wife, Sangeeta, spent that money, following which they had a big fight. Sangeeta and Sahil hatched a plan to kill Harveer and included her sister in it as well. On the night of July 11, Harveer was sleeping in his flat when Sangeeta and Sahil knocked on his bedroom door. He did not respond as he was asleep, after which the trio entered his room through the window, and killed him by hitting his head with a heavy object," Kulveer alleged in his complaint. After disposing Harveer's body, Sangeeta came to her in-laws' house in Ajronda the next day. When the relatives inquired about Harveer, Sangeeta claimed that he had gone abroad with friends. After staying with her in-laws for ten days, Sangeeta left. Following her departure, whenever she was asked about Harveer over the phone, she would come up with various excuses, the deceased's brother claimed further. On August 14, Sangeeta sent a WhatsApp message to her family from Harveer's phone, stating that he had made a serious mistake and would be leaving the city. This message raised suspicions in Kulveer, leading him to file a missing person report at the BPTP Police Station and express his suspicion about Sangeeta and Sahil, the police said. When the police summoned Sangeeta and Sahil for questioning, their phones were turned off. This heightened the police's suspicions, resulting in Sangeeta and Sahil being taken into custody on Wednesday night. 'During interrogation, both of them confessed to throwing Harveer's body in a deserted place in front of Sidhdata Ashram, after which the police recovered the body. We are questioning both the accused, and Sangeeta's sister, Jyoti, is also being investigated", stated BPTP police Station SHO Arvind Kumar.
