Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning First Reactions
Discussing Film's Andrew J. Salazar says, "Didn't really enjoy The Final Reckoning," listing his reasons as "stunning visuals bogged down by an overtly complex script that introduces so much that goes nowhere."
In a follow-up post, Salazar expresses that the film "does not feel like a 'grand finale' at all" and that he was "really disappointed", even going as far to say, "first time I've seen an M:I movie and felt nothing."
Those are ruthless words, and sentiments Salazar isn't alone in feeling.
James Preston Poole, who also writes for Discussing Film, says, "Sadly, it gets bogged down in so much nostalgia and needless retcons that it reflects the worst of franchise filmmaking."
Didn't really enjoy THE FINAL RECKONING :(
It's got McQ's best and worst tendencies, i.e. stunning visuals bogged down by an overtly complex script that introduces so much that goes nowhere. Obviously feels like they were filming this without a script. pic.twitter.com/6wcfksJdac — Andrew J. Salazar (@AndrewJ626) May 13, 2025
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - THE FINAL RECKONING can sometimes be M:I at its best, massive stunts and dense spycraft included. Sadly, it gets bogged down in so much nostalgia and needless retcons that it reflects the worst of franchise filmmaking. David Ehrlich at IndieWire has perhaps one of the harshest reactions, calling Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning "dull and dysfunctional" and says "as someone so supportive of Cruise's crusade to save the movies and whatnot this was a massive heartbreaker."
Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning is dull and dysfunctional in a way i didn't think this franchise was capable of. setpieces are obviously incredible, but as someone so supportive of Cruise's crusade to save the movies and whatnot this was a massive heartbreaker. — david ehrlich (@davidehrlich) May 13, 2025
Germain Lussier, Senior Reporter for Gizmodo, says Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning "is oddly the least action forward entry in the franchise" and that "It's long, it's plotty, it's repetitive".
However, Lussier says that when the action scenes arrive, "They're incredible."
Entertainment Reporter, Jonathan Sim, echoes Lussier, saying, the movie "starts more as a dark, grim sci-fi thriller before eventually delivering the action-adventure you expect."
Sim does praise Tom Cruise, calling him "as fantastic as ever."
#MissionImpossible: The Final Reckoning is oddly the least action forward entry in the franchise. It's long, it's plotty, it's repetitive, but when those scenes do hit? Holy shit. They're incredible. So i'm pretty mixed on it overall. High highs, low lows. pic.twitter.com/JRemUcjsVh — Germain Lussier (@GermainLussier) May 13, 2025

Matt Neglia of Next Best Picture says, "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is the biggest film in the franchise yet" and he praises the "sound design, score, and tension" but echoes the concerns others have, saying, "the film sometimes buckles under the weight of its ambition, bogged down by excessive callbacks, overstuffed exposition, unnecessary tie-ins, and forced revelations."

Positive Reactions to Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
However, among the lukewarm reactions are some overwhelmingly positive ones.
Like Neglia, Collider's Perri Nemiroff says she "struggled with some of the mission details and callbacks to past installments" but overall the film "is a solid addition to the franchise", and that while "there are occasional lulls in the film's 2 hour and 49 minute running time...Tom Cruise's conviction while playing Ethan is always powerful enough to reel you back in.

Jillian Chilingerian of Offscreen Central had one of the most positive reactions, saying, "Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning is a high octane global farewell to the importance of friendship that is everything that makes you fall in love with movies" and that it's "peak Tom Cruise chaos".

More positivity comes from Fandango's Erik Davis, who says, "Director Chris McQuarrie and star Tom Cruise truly take Mission: Impossible to the next level with The Final Reckoning."
Davis says it's "the biggest, wildest and most consequential Mission movie yet."
"When I was a kid, my dad would tell me Tom Cruise is a guy who gives you your money's worth at the movies," says Davis. "I've always agreed with that sentiment, and I definitely still do after watching The Final Reckoning."

Neighbor Builds Fence Flap So Dachshund Besties Can Play Together

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Two dachshund best friends have captured internet viewers' attention after their owners built a custom "dog flap" in the garden fence separating them, so the pair who live next door could see each other every day. A video of the setup, shared to TikTok by @shmeve on July 13, has delighted viewers on the platform. The post has been viewed over 1.8 million times, leaving many on the platform in stitches. The clip shows a wooden garden fence, fitted with a small flap toward its lower end and a ramp leading up to it. On one side, the video creator's dachshund waits eagerly in front of the flap, tail wagging. When a family member opens it, the dog races up the ramp and greets their neighbor's dachshund, who pulls themselves through from the other side. The two then dash around the garden together, chasing and playing in an unmistakable display of joy. "When your best friend lives next door so you get a sausage dog flap made for you," an overlaid text on the clip read. Viewers flooded the comments with praise for the inventive fence feature and the clear bond between the two dogs. Many remarked on how eagerly the dachshund duo ran to meet each other, while others shared how much the clip brightened their day. "The way they both try to get through at the same time," one viewer said, while another added: "This is amazing, living their best lives." "Wow so lucky to have this with [your] bestie," a third posted. "That's adorable," one viewer commented. "None of you can move now," another added. "This made my heart really happy," a third wrote. "This is the best thing I've ever saw on this app," one posted. "This is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen," another viewer commented. The simple addition to the fence appears to have transformed the daily routine for the dogs, giving them regular opportunities for exercise and companionship without the barrier that once kept them apart. Dachshunds, often affectionately called sausage dogs or wiener dogs, are known for their playful energy and strong attachments to both their human and canine companions. Grandma Told Man She Had Got Him a 'PS5'—Nothing Prepared Him for the Truth

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. An Indiana man was delighted when his grandma told him she had bought him a PlayStation 5 at a bargain price—until he saw it for himself. Malachi, 26, took to Reddit to share a picture of the video-game console his grandmother, 69, purchased for him. "She told me she had gotten me one kinda out of the blue," Malachi told Newsweek. "It wasn't my birthday or anything, but she thrift-shops and goes to a lot of rummage sales. I guess she assumed she had hit gold and gave it to me since I'm one of the younger grandkids." The PlayStation 5, or PS5 as it is more commonly known, is the most-popular video games console in the world. Data compiled by Statista showed over 5.23 million PS5 consoles have been sold worldwide, putting it ahead of the Nintendo DS and Switch as the world's bestselling video games console. Malachi, who asked for his last name to be omitted from this story, was therefore understandably delighted when his grandma informed him she had managed to get him one as a gift. "I was excited because I don't game much due to not having a newer console," he said. "I didn't ask her for it, but I'm not gonna say no to a new PS5." Malachi's mood quickly changed, however, when his grandma handed over the PS5 and he discovered, to his horror, that it was actually something called a GS5. The games on the system were markedly different. "It has arcade style games, think Super Mario and Sonic type games," Malachi said. "It's more similar to the PS1 and PS2," he added. Despite the disappointment, Malachi was able to see the funny side and didn't hesitate to take a picture of his new "PS5" and share it online. Posting a picture of the console to Reddit under the handle u/OkEscape7558, Malachi wrote: "My granny told me she got me a PS5 and some controllers." The post blew up, earning almost 100,000 upvotes and over 2,200 comments. "How is that even legal?" one commenter wrote, while others came out in support of Malachi's grandmother. "You hold your tongue and thank your sweet Grandma," another wrote. "As far as she should be concerned, she got you a nice present that made their grandchild happy. If she's on a fixed income you thank her harder and you take that fake ps5 home and you play it and enjoy it." One user wrote: "Infuriating for now but keep that thing. When she's gone that's going to be quite the memory." Malachi, to his credit, has been largely positive about his new GS5. "It wouldn't be a bad game console if it had its own name and wasn't a rip-off of PlayStation," he said. More important, Malachi never let on to grandma that it wasn't a PS5. "I just said thank you and didn't tell her it was a fake," he said.

Cat's Behavior With Golden Retriever vs Husky Leaves Viewers in Hysterics

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. How a cat behaves towards their husky sibling versus their golden retriever sibling has left the internet in stitches. Instagram user @maplebaconbutter shared a video showing their cat affectionately lying on top of their golden retriever, before cutting to footage of the same cat energetically pouncing multiple times on their husky. The hysterical compilation has already garnered almost 135,000 likes and 869,000 views on Instagram. "How our cat acts with our golden," the text overlay reads as the golden and the cat enjoy a quiet snuggle. "Vs with our Husky," appears next, as the orange cat and husky engage in playful sparring. "His 2 personalities," the owner captioned the post. Huskies are known for their high energy and playful nature, but that can sometimes be overwhelming for cats—especially those that are more reserved. While some huskies can get along with cats if introduced early and properly supervised, their prey drive and boisterous personalities mean they may be more inclined to chase or play rough, according to Dogster. Golden retrievers, on the other hand, are generally considered one of the most cat-friendly breeds. Their gentle temperament, affectionate nature, and lower prey drive make them more likely to form close, calm bonds with feline companions, Dogster notes. The cat in question appears to be a Maine Coon, a breed often celebrated for its friendliness toward dogs. Maine Coons are known for their confident, sociable personalities and ability to adapt to various types of canine companions—including both high-energy breeds like huskies and laid-back ones like golden retrievers. A stock image showing an orange cat and a golden retriever outside together in the grass. A stock image showing an orange cat and a golden retriever outside together in the grass. fury123/iStock / Getty Images Plus Instagram users were quick to comment on the relatable dynamic. "He likes the golden more cuz it looks like him just larger," suggested one user. "He matches their energies. Huskies are super energetic so he plays with him. The golden looks a bit older and a lot more chill so he gets the snuggles," said another. "Matches energy of each dog. I bet the husky loves it. Hehe," said another viewer. "Cuddle buddy vs Wrestling buddy," observed another user. "He speaks their love language," said Syd. "Golden retriever: Gentle fluffy companion. Husky: Worthy opponent. Capable of offering a warrior's death," shared another user. "Me with my bf vs me with my friends," joked another. Newsweek reached out to @maplebaconbutter for comment via Instagram.
