Fire that started at Stripes gas station an act of arson, investigators say
Arson investigators determined that the fire was intentional based on evidence gathered at the scene, witness interviews and security camera footage from a nearby 7-Eleven convenience store, according to a written statement from Assistant Fire Chief Juan 'Tony' Perez.
The man, identified by the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office as Santos Ligues, succumbed to his injuries at Brooke Army Medical Center in the early morning of Aug. 3.
Investigators are looking further into the details of the commercial fire that ignited at the station at 5939 South Padre Island Drive.
Officers from the Corpus Christi Police Department responded to the call of a fire at 5:39 p.m., according to a departmental news release.
First responders arrived at 5:44 p.m. and found a vehicle and gas pumps engulfed in flames underneath one of the awnings and the injured man in the parking lot, Fire Chief Brandon Wade said.
The first crew of firefighters to arrive immediately tended to the injured man, while another pulled a hose line to extinguish the vehicle fire, he said.
Medics first took him to Bay Area Medical Center. However, an ambulance later transferred him to the hospital burn unit in San Antonio due to the severity of his burns, Perez said.
Perez said that the department collected statements from witnesses and spoke with the victim's family members at the end of last week and over the weekend to compile a report that explained the cause of the fire.
He said that the man's family is believed to be from San Antonio.
The Corpus Christi Police Department did not respond to a request for comment.

The Texas House is set to reconvene Friday as Democrats continue standoff, head to California ahead of redistricting hearing
After the Texas House failed to make a quorum on Tuesday, Texas Democrats were told to return to Austin by Friday or face consequences. The Democratic lawmakers spent the week in Illinois, New York and Massachusetts. On Friday, they are expected to meet with Gov. Gavin Newsom in California. The Texas House reconvened Tuesday afternoon in Austin after Democratic lawmakers fled the state in an effort to block a redistricting vote. Democratic lawmakers were not in attendance, making it the second day in a row the House didn't meet a quorum. The House is going to meet again on Friday in an attempt to make a quorum. Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows has since suspended direct deposits for lawmakers who left the state, intensifying pressure to restore quorum during the special session. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton shared a stern warning aimed at the House Democrats if they don't return to the Capitol by Friday: "The people of Texas elected lawmakers, not jet-setting runaways looking for headlines. If you don't show up to work, you get fired." Paxton has also launched an investigation into the Texas Majority Project PAC, a group founded by former staffers of Beto O'Rourke and reportedly funded by billionaire George Soros, over allegations of illegal support for Democratic lawmakers who left Texas to block Republican-backed redistricting legislation. A family with young children was left in 'total shock' after being evacuated from their Glasgow home amid a raging inferno. Firefighter William McColl, who is based at Castlemilk Community Fire Station, recently responded to a blaze at a block of flats in the area. The incident initially involved a pile of rubbish being set alight; however, it became more serious after the fire spread to an adjacent property, causing 11 people to be evacuated from their homes. "I don't think people understand the impact of their actions - that is someone's home. Thankfully, there were no casualties on this occasion, but the consequences are still massive for everyone. "People need to understand that once they have lit that match, they can have no control over what happens." Crews responded to 3195 deliberate fires during just a three-month period. William and his crewmates regularly engage with the local community on the dangers of fire-setting. He believes education to be one of the key ways to prevent deliberate fires. William said: "We always work with our communities to make them aware of the dangers and consequences of deliberate fire-setting. "Things can go wrong very quickly, and people can be seriously injured. This can then lead to criminal convictions."
