Trichy: The National Research Centre for Banana (ICAR-NRCB) in Trichy has begun distributing highly improved banana planting materials to farmers across the state to increase productivity and reduce disease. The move is expected to benefit Trichy's major crop, cultivated over 6,000 hectares. In recent months, the institute has supplied varieties such as Nei Poovan, Nendran, and Red Banana, developed through cell suspension-derived tissue culture using bioreactor technology, to farmers in 25 districts. So far, over one lakh plants have been distributed, including 30,000 in Trichy. "These plants will improve cultivation and uplift the livelihoods of farmers," said ICAR-NRCB director Dr R Selvarajan. He added that distribution would be expanded statewide. According to NRCB scientists, the new plants are uniform in growth, high-yielding, and less susceptible to pests and diseases, ensuring sustainable cultivation.
