Trump intends to launch big Gaza aid expansion, but funding is unclear

Washington Post3 days ago
The controversial U.S. and Israeli-backed aid distribution organization in Gaza plans to quadruple the number of sites where food is handed out, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said.
'The immediate plan is to scale up the number of sites up to 16 and begin to operate them as much as 24 hours a day to get more food to people, more efficiency,' Huckabee told Fox News on Wednesday evening. He described the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which currently operates four sites guarded by U.S. security contractors, as an 'American-based operation' that 'we stood up.'

Israeli strike kills four Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza

Al Jazeera said an Israeli airstrikes killed its correspondent Anas al-Sharif and three other of its staffers in Gaza City. The broadcaster said Al-Sharif, 28, one of the channel's most prominent voices in Gaza, was killed alongside reporter Mohammed Qreiqeh, and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal 'in a targeted Israeli strike on a tent housing journalists in Gaza City.' The Committee to Protect Journalists warned last month that it was gravely concerned for al-Sharif's safety as he was being "targeted by an Israeli military smear campaign' and that the unfounded accusations 'represent an effort to manufacture consent to kill Al-Sharif.' The director of Shifa hospital, Dr Muhammad Abu Salmiya, told The Independent that in total seven were killed in strike which hit a tent where they were sheltering within the Shifa medical complex in Gaza City . 'The Al Jazeera journalists' tent in front of Al-Shifa Medical Complex was bombed. Anas Al-Sharif, Mohammed Qreiqeh, and four journalists working with them were killed, along with another bystander,' Dr Salmiya said. 'Part of the hospital's emergency department was also damaged. They arrived at the emergency room with severe injuries.' 'The tent was directly bombed and they arrived at the emergency department with severe injuries,' he added. Israel's military claimed in a statement late on Sunday that al-Sharif had "posed as a journalist" and alleged he was with Hamas militant group. But the Committee to Protect Journalists has repeatedly called for international protection of al-Sharif saying that he had been 'a key source of news from Gaza for international audiences since the war began more than 650 days ago.' 'We are deeply alarmed by the repeated threats made by Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee against Al Jazeera's Gaza correspondent Anas Al-Sharif and call on the international community to protect him,' CPJ Regional Director Sara Qudah said at the time. She added that it was not the first time he had been targeted by the military 'but the danger to his life is now acute.' 'Israel has killed at least six Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza during this war. These latest unfounded accusations represent an effort to manufacture consent to kill Al-Sharif,' she added.

Bessent says new Fed chair should be someone who can examine organization, Nikkei reports

TOKYO (Reuters) -U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the new Federal Reserve chair should be someone "who can examine the whole organization" as the Fed's mission has included so many things outside of monetary policy and has put its independence at risk, Japan's Nikkei newspaper reported. "It's someone who has to have the confidence of the markets, the ability to analyze complex economic data," Bessent told the Nikkei in an interview, when asked about the qualities the new Fed chair should possess. "And it's also someone who wants to be, I think, very attuned to forward thinking, as opposed to relying on historical data," Bessent was quoted as saying in the interview, which was conducted in Washington on August 7 and published on Monday. A source has told Reuters that Bessent is leading a search for a successor to Fed Chair Jerome Powell, with an expanded list that includes a longtime economic consultant and a past regional Fed president.
