ESPN's Greg McElroy calls Auburn a 'sleeper' ahead of the 2025 season

ESPN's Greg McElroy calls Auburn a 'sleeper' ahead of the 2025 season

USA Today2 days ago
The preseason Associated Press poll for the 2025 season was released this week, and the Auburn Tigers were on the outside by receiving 10 votes.
ESPN analyst and sports talk show host Greg McElroy shared his opinion of the poll following its release. During his spiel, McElroy included Auburn as a "sleeper" team for the top 25 by season's end. McElroy shared the same sentiments as ESPN's David Hale by pointing out that Auburn caught many unlucky breaks last season and does not expect the program to experience the misfortune of losing multiple one-score games during the upcoming season.
'It's just, there's no way (Auburn) can be as snakebit as they were last year," McElroy said during a recent episode of Always College Football. "The football gods won't allow, it's not likely. I guess it can happen, Nebraska fans are like 'We've been that way for awhile now, we've lost a lot of one-score games.' I get it, so I understand it can happen for sure.'
One of the reasons why McElroy feels that Auburn's "receiving votes" status can change early on is thanks to their ability to revamp several position groups through the transfer portal. The defense held its own last season, but enhancements at wide receiver and offensive line could propel the Tigers to new heights under head coach Hugh Freeze.
While McElroy respects Auburn and feels that they may be underrated heading into the new year, he is not ready to say that the Tigers are ready to contend for their first-ever College Football Playoff bid.
'So I look at Auburn and for them to be 5, 8, 11, 12 spots – so basically 37th in college football – to me is way too far (down),' McElroy said. 'I think Auburn has a chance to be a Top 25 team. I don't think they're a (College Football) Playoff team, but they have a chance to be a Top 25 team for sure. Especially with the pieces that've improved from last year to this year.'
Auburn will get its first chance to make a statement on Friday, Aug. 29, when it faces Baylor on the road at 7 p.m. CT.

Texans' C.J. Stroud praises Panthers' Bryce Young: 'He's one of the best QBs I've seen'

C.J. Stroud will always be attached to Bryce Young. The Houston Texans quarterback went second in the 2023 NFL Draft after Young landed with the Carolina Panthers at No. 1 overall. Both gunslingers grew up in California, with Young playing for the Inland Empire Ducks while Stroud suited up for Pomona Valley Steelers. The duo also finished top three in the Heisman Trophy voting during 2021, with Young becoming the first Alabama quarterback to claim the title. And they trained together ahead of the draft with the intent of becoming franchise quarterbacks for their respective programs. While Stroud, who won the 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year Award after becoming the fourth first-year passer to throw for 4,000 yards, has found more success entering Year 3, he's perhaps Young's biggest supporter around the league. Even when Young struggled as a rookie and eventually ended up getting benched, Stroud knew his friend would figure it out. He has, and it was on display throughout Thursday's joint practice at the Methodist Training Center in Houston. Carolina seems poised to make waves in the NFC South this upcoming fall, and Stroud isn't surprised to see the No. 1 overall pick live up to his status. "He's very even keeled, very to himself. I think I've seen a dog come out of him that he has that a lot of people haven't seen," Stroud said. "But I know he dealt with some frustrations. I think it's good that we go through these ups and downs to refocus you back on what's important. I think he had that, and I had that last year as well. I think he bounced back like he should, and we all know he can. He's a heck of a player, one of the best quarterbacks I've ever seen in my life. He needs some help around him too. I'm just really proud of that guy. Just the same way he said about me, through every ups and downs, every valley and peak, he stayed the same guy, stayed loyal and stayed a friend and a brother. So, I'm very appreciative of him." Stroud and Young will do battle in Saturday's exhibition outing, which kicks off at Noon CT from NRG Stadium.

ESPN Reveals Preseason SEC Football Power Rankings

ESPN Reveals Preseason SEC Football Power Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The start of the 2025 college football season is just 15 days away. While Week 0 has a couple intriguing matchups like Iowa State vs. Kansas State in Ireland, one of the biggest games of the year will take place the following week. No. 1 Texas will travel to Columbus to face No. 2 Ohio State on Aug. 30. It marks the first time in history that the top two teams will meet in the season opener. Now that we're inching closer to the season, several preseason rankings are being released across national media networks. On Friday, ESPN revealed its preseason SEC power rankings for the 2025 season. To no surprise, Texas holds the top spot in the SEC. The Longhorns are No. 1 in the Coaches Poll as well, and will likely land at No. 1 in the initial AP Poll whenever it's released. Georgia (No. 2), Alabama (No. 3), LSU (No. 4), and Texas A&M (No. 5) round out ESPN's top five SEC teams heading into the season. The Longhorns will face conference foes Florida, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Georgia, Arkansas, and Texas A&M this season. That's a fairly favorable draw for Texas. Anything can happen in a rivalry game when it comes to facing Oklahoma and Texas A&M, but outside of the Georgia matchup, the Longhorns should feel confident in every other game on the schedule. Texas is looking to reach the SEC Championship Game for the second year in a story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 8, 2025, where it first appeared.
