Building workers demand revival of welfare board
P Apparao and Pilli Narasimha Rao, district president and secretary of the Building Workers Union, stated that the previous government had done injustice to construction workers. Before the elections, Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, Pawan Kalyan and Lokesh promised in every meeting to revive the welfare board and implement welfare schemes if their coalition came to power.
However, they expressed anguish that despite ten months in power, the coalition government has taken no steps to fulfil this promise. NTR district president of CITU A Venkateswara Rao said that Rs 4,298 crore is currently available in the state's Welfare Board, as recently announced by the Labour Minister in the Legislative Council.
He stressed that the government does not need to allocate even a single rupee. He demanded immediate revival of the Building Workers Welfare Board and the implementation of welfare schemes.
The previous YSRCP government halted ongoing welfare schemes for workers by issuing Circular 1214. The coalition government had promised to cancel this circular and revive the Welfare Board.
The leaders warned that if the State government fails to honour its promises, construction workers will launch an agitation.

Mamata plans ‘special celebration' for Kanyashree Diwas in 2026 if beneficiaries cross one crore
KOLKATA: Exuding confidence that the Trinamool Congress government will return to power in West Bengal for the fourth consecutive term after the Assembly polls due next year, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said she wants to celebrate 'Kanyashree Diwas' on a large scale in 2026. Currently, more than 93 lakh girl students in West Bengal are receiving the benefits of Kanyashree. Banerjee said that if the number of beneficiaries reaches one crore next year, a 'special celebration' will be organised for Kanyashree. Addressing the 'Kanyashree Diwas' programme at Dhanadhanya Auditorium in Alipore, she informed that the state government has already spent Rs 17,000 crore on this programme. If the Assembly elections are held on time next year, the new government is expected to be sworn in around May or June. 'Kanyashree Diwas' is celebrated on August 14. As a result, the 'special celebration' she spoke about on Thursday will take place after the elections. According to political observers, Banerjee's advance announcement of the 'special celebration' after the elections by setting targets is politically significant, as she allegedly wanted to convey that her government will return to power in 2026. In this context, many in the state administration are referring to the Chief Minister's administrative meeting in Birbhum a few weeks ago. In that meeting, speaking about the housing project, she said, 'I have already given money for the 'Banglar Bari' project to 12 lakh people. Another 16 lakh people will get the first instalment next December. Whatever is left, I will pay in three-four years.' This indicates that, beyond the special celebration of 'Kanyashree Diwas', Banerjee has allegedly begun outlining what she will do after the elections. In 2013, the West Bengal government launched the 'Kanyashree' project to prevent child marriage and to help girls from economically backward families pursue their education. Initially, it was only for schoolgirls, but later, girl students of colleges and universities were also included.

Himachal CM Sukhu inaugurates state-level Van Mahotsav
Shimla, Aug 14 (PTI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday inaugurated the 76th state-level Van Mahotsav at Kanlog in Shimla, and said that around 9,000 hectares of forest land this year would be planted with trees under different schemes. Sukhu added 60 per cent of these saplings would bear fruits as he also planted a deodar sapling during the event. Additionally, he launched the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojna across all Assembly constituencies and virtually interacted with ministers and MLAs participating in the programme, and discussed forest conservation and afforestation measures in detail. Addressing a gathering on this occasion, he said that Van Mahotsav highlights the importance of forests, often called the Earth's lifeline. He said that the state government was working to protect and enrich the bio-diversity of the state. 'These efforts will contribute to achieve the target of increasing 30 per cent forest cover by 2030," he added. The chief minister said that the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana would not only promote forest development, but also enhance public participation and strengthen the rural economy. 'Under this scheme, mahila mandals, yuvak mandals, self-help groups and joint forest committees would plant and look after saplings on one to five hectares of designated forest land for five years. A budget provision of Rs 100 crore has been made for this purpose," he said. He said that the state government was also focusing on financial discipline for 'vyavastha parivartan' and introducing various reforms in the working of the Forest department. 'The officers are being encouraged to dedicate more time to field work related to forest expansion and conservation rather than office routines," he said. He also gave cheques of Rs one lakh each to different mahila mandals for tree plantation under the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana. Apart from this, cheques of Rs 50,000 each have also been distributed under the JICA project. Export controls imposed by China have raised concerns about supply chain vulnerabilities, particularly in critical sectors like defence and electronics. India aims to diversify its rare earth supply through a combination of imports, domestic mining and international partnerships. The government is investing in research and development to improve domestic refining and processing capabilities. India is engaging in diplomatic efforts to secure stable and affordable access to rare earth materials, while also promoting cooperation with like-minded countries. This was informed by Kamran Rizvi, Secretary in the Ministry of Heavy Industry, during a function in New Delhi. He added that the scheme will provide end-to-end support for the conversion of rare earth oxides into magnets. The subsidy will facilitate investment for establishing processing facilities for companies to convert rare earth oxides into magnets. The government is considering introducing a PLI scheme specifically for rare earth magnets and critical mineral recycling to boost domestic production. India is working with countries like Australia, the US and Vietnam to strengthen access to rare earth elements through initiatives like the India-US Critical Minerals Partnership and QUAD. The government is collaborating with Indian Rare Earths Ltd to accelerate domestic resource development and reduce reliance on imports. Initiatives are underway to promote the recycling of critical minerals and reform mining regulations to encourage private sector participation. China's overwhelming control of global rare earth processing - commanding over 90 per cent of the world's magnet production capacity - has created significant vulnerabilities for industries worldwide. These materials are critical across multiple sectors, including automobiles, home appliances, and clean energy systems. Beyond China, there are only a few alternative suppliers of critical minerals. The Union Cabinet in January 2025 approved the launch of the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) with an expenditure of Rs 16,300 crore and an expected investment of Rs 18,000 crore by Public Sector Undertakings. Recently, Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy said the central government is actively encouraging private companies to mine and explore critical minerals overseas and bring them back into the country to serve the needs of the domestic industry. The rare earth materials have become crucial to industries such as electronics, automotive, construction, and machinery. India's total imports of rare earth elements and related compounds have averaged around USD 33 million annually over the last four years, according to an SBI report. In the current financial year (FY25), rare earth imports stood at USD 31.9 million. Meanwhile, imports of rare earth magnets have been significantly higher, averaging USD 249 million per year over the same period. In FY25, magnet imports rose to USD 291 million, the highest in the last four years.
