VW tops Carwow configuration rankings but faces supply shortfalls
Volkswagen remains the most-configured brand on the Carwow platform year-to-date*, accounting for 8.9% of all vehicle configurations, according to the company's latest data. BMW and Audi followed with 7.3% and 7.1% shares respectively.
The German manufacturer also leads in consumer enquiries, receiving 9.1% of total leads delivered to Carwow's retail partners in 2025 so far. Volkswagen enquiries rose 10% year-on-year in April, reflecting strong market interest that is consistent with broader registration trends. Data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows Volkswagen's share of UK new car registrations increased from 8.03% in 2024 to 9.08% in 2025.

However, Carwow has identified a gap between supply and demand for Volkswagen vehicles. Around two-thirds of UK locations have a shortfall in stock from Volkswagen retailers. The largest imbalances are in Leeds, Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Newcastle upon Tyne. Collectively, these regions generate 8% of all Volkswagen configurations and enquiries via Carwow and account for 10% of Volkswagen sales on the platform, suggesting 'high purchase intent and less retailer competition', the company said.
The Tiguan remains Volkswagen's most-configured model on Carwow, with a 1.5% share across all marques. It is followed by the Golf and Polo, each accounting for 0.9% of configurations.
Battery electric vehicle (BEV) interest also continues to grow across Carwow, with configurations up 39% and enquiries up 79% year-on-year. Volkswagen's ID range ranked fifth for both BEV configurations and enquiries in April.
Volkswagen is also proving popular in the used car market. Three models appeared in Carwow's list of the top 10 'most profitable'* used cars sold via its daily online auctions in Q1 2025. The 2020 Golf GTI ranked second with a potential margin of £3,386, followed by the 2021 Golf R (£3,196) and the 2020 Tiguan (£2,702).
Commenting on the data, Sepi Arani, Managing Director of Media & Commercial at Carwow, noted that 'competition for market share amongst brands is continuing to ramp up', with Volkswagen holding a strong position but facing growing pressure from new market entrants.
'Despite Volkswagen retaining the top spot in the list of most-configured manufacturers, it has dropped in the rankings of most popular models on Carwow as a whole,' Arani said. He also pointed to the rising visibility of Chinese brands, with the JAECOO 7 currently the most-configured model in Q2 and eight of the top 10 most-viewed reviews on the platform featuring Chinese marques.
Arani said that established OEMs 'need to address their gap in supply so they can continue to meet strong consumer demand' in an increasingly competitive market.

China Walks a Line in U.S. Trade Talks, Trying Not to Overplay Its Hand
In its high-stakes trade talks with the United States, China has been trying to strike a balance in how it wields its market clout. It controls the world's supply of rare earth metals and magnets. And it has withheld supplies of the materials — crucial ingredients in everything from cars to fighter jets — as leverage. At the same time, Beijing knows it must not overplay its hand by pushing Washington so hard that the United States feels compelled to make the long-term investments needed to break its dependence on China. This delicate dynamic was underlined in an apparent compromise the countries reached on Tuesday in London. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said China's negotiators had agreed to resume sending rare earths to American companies. The Chinese government did not confirm this. But on Wednesday afternoon, the JL Mag Rare-Earth Company, a leading magnet producer in Ganzhou, China, said in a public disclosure that it had been issued licenses by China's Ministry of Commerce for sales of nonmilitary magnet exports to the United States, Europe and Southeast Asia. China has a long history of using government policy to control markets, periodically flooding countries with very low-priced Chinese supplies. That has driven many of China's overseas rare earth competitors out of business. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Watch Xiaomi Set Production EV Record at The Nurburgring
Chinese tech giant Xiaomi, primarily known for its smartphones, is branching out by making cars. The SU7 is the company's inaugural model and has already spawned a high-performance Ultra version. Last October, a prototype lapped the Nürburgring in an astonishing 6 minutes and 46.8 seconds . At that point, Xiaomi promised it would return to the Green Hell and repeat the hot lap with a production-ready car. Predictably, the SU7 Ultra that customers can purchase in China was unable to match the performance of the stripped-down prototype. Nevertheless, a lap time of 7 minutes and 4.95 seconds is a remarkable achievement. It makes Xiaomi's electric super sedan faster than the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, which lapped the challenging German track in 7 minutes and 7.55 seconds . The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra is also a tad faster than the Rimac Nevera, effectively dethroning the Croatian electric hypercar from the production EV leaderboard. The exotic two-door EV completed the lap in 7 minutes and 5.29 seconds . To clarify, all times mentioned refer to the longer configuration of the Nürburgring, which spans 12.9 miles (20.8 kilometers). The Mercedes-AMG One's record for the fastest production vehicle isn't in any danger for now. The F1-engined hypercar completed the lap in 6 minutes and 29 seconds last year. As for the outright record, it belongs to the track-only Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo, with a blistering lap time of 5 minutes and 19.55 seconds. It's hard to imagine a street-legal car will ever get close to that. Onboard footage shared by Xiaomi shows the SU7 Ultra reaching a GPS-verified speed of 215 mph (346 km/h). That makes the SU7 Ultra the fastest production sedan ever, whether gas or electric. The title previously belonged to the Maserati Ghibli 334 Ultima , with a top speed of 208 mph (334 km/h). The defunct Italian luxury sedan was only 1 mph faster than the Bentley Flying Spur W-12 and 2 mph faster than the Lucid Air Sapphire. Photo by: Xiaomi Photo by: Xiaomi Xiaomi mentions that the car can go even faster. With enough road ahead, it can exceed 217 mph (350 km/h). It's worth noting that the SU7 Ultra that tackled the Nürburgring wasn't completely standard. Xiaomi fitted the optional track package available to customers, so it doesn't disqualify the car from being considered a production model. As a refresher, the tri-motor EV has a combined output of 1,527 hp and can hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 1.98 seconds. At 201.3 inches long, it's bigger than a Taycan and even heavier, at 5,203 pounds (2,360 kilograms). It went on sale in China at the end of February with a base price of just 529,900 yuan (nearly $74,000).
