Octopus Energy issues urgent warning to households which will see meters deactivated this month

Some households could be left without hot water and heating if they don't make the 'vital' switch to a modern smart meter.
Octopus Energy has warned customers with an outdated radio teleswitch (RTS) to get a smart meter before the old ones stop working at the end of this month.
The major energy supplier explained RTS meters, which were first introduced in the 1980s, use longwave radio signals from the BBC's RTS meters to switch meters between peak and off-peak rates.
However, the equipment which broadcasts the signal will be switched off on 30 June – which will affect more than 600,000 customers.
Jan Shortt, the general secretary of the National Pensioners Convention, said many of those living in homes affected by the RTS meters switch-off will be older people.
'A good proportion may not even be aware they have such a meter, or if they do, won't know they are about to be switched off,' she said.
The energy supplier explained that if you have a large black box next to your meter, you may have an RTS meter.
Octopus Energy is now deploying additional engineers to ensure all properties with outdated meters can switch to smart meters before the deadline, in hopes of minimising disruptions.
It has also fast-tracked the switch for its customers, covering nearly a quarter of affected households.
John Szymik, CEO of Octopus Energy Services, said: "Octopus has boosted its service capability to offer fast-tracked assistance and ensure that no one is left without heating.
'We urge all affected customers, of any supplier, to book their meter exchange now to ensure a smooth transition."
Those who do not make the switch in time may be overcharged for electricity or see their hot water and heating cut off.
Explaining the switch off in a YouTube video, Greg Jackson, CEO of Octopus Energy, said: 'This isn't one of those usual messages where energy companies are trying to get you to use a smart meter, this is specifically for the 2.5 per cent of customers which have these RTS meters that are going to stop working later this year.
'It's really important to make the switch as soon as possible because as we are changing these meters so resources will be tight, and we can't leave it all to the last minute.'

3D-printing technology – or, to use its proper name, additive manufacturing (AM) – has progressed fast over the past five years. Dutch car company Donkervoort is one of the latest to take advantage of its unique benefits, by 3D-printing intercoolers for its forthcoming P24 RS supercar. These were developed by Australia's Conflux, and the technique goes one step further than merely being a convenient way to manufacture things. By using AM, the weight of the aluminium-alloy liquid-to-air intercoolers has been slashed from 16kg to 1.4kg. Conflux describes the technique as Formula 1 technology (its founder has a background in the sport), and it has other benefits too: this intercooler has superior thermal performance and packaging benefits to conventional equivalents. It should be tougher too, because it's a single, one-piece structure with no joints or welds. Donkervoort issued a specification for the intercooler and Conflux actually improved on it, returning a design that was so effective that it could be downsized still further from the original prototype. Rather than mounted at the front of the car, the compact intercoolers can be sited within the engine bay, reducing the length of the inlet tract by two-thirds. The result is quicker throttle response, better efficiency and optimised weight distribution, all of which directly benefit the driver. Coolant flowing through the intercooler is dedicated to the job and cooled by an external radiator not shared with any other drivetrain cooling system. AM is a process whereby, controlled by a 3D computer model, objects are formed by firing lasers into a bed of powdered material, fusing it together. Conflux makes the new intercoolers from AlSi10Mg, a high-grade aluminium alloy that it claims is one of the most common and well accepted aluminium alloys in the industry. Conflux also uses it for components in aviation, motorsport and industrial applications. Intercoolers are needed because when air is compressed (by a turbocharger in this case), it heats up and becomes less dense. For maximum performance and trouble-free combustion, an engine needs cool induction air. An intercooler cools down the compressed and heated air before it enters the engine by conducting heat through finned walls into a coolant. Thanks to the AM process, these fins in the new Conflux intercooler are extremely thin: at 160 microns, just two or three times thicker than a human hair. And the thinner the fins can be, the more effective they will be at conducting away the unwanted heat.

UK Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation rose to 3.8% in July, up from 3.6% in June, surpassing most economists' forecasts of 3.7%. Transport was the main contributor to the inflation increase, primarily driven by a 30.2% surge in air fares between June and July, the largest monthly rise since 2001. Petrol and diesel prices also increased in July, contrasting with a decline during the same period last year. Food and drink inflation continued its upward trend for the fourth consecutive month, reaching 4.9% in July from 4.5% in June. Costain revenues slide due to completed road projects and HS2 delays

Infrastructure specialist Costain has revealed a slump in revenues following the completion of road projects and further delays to work on HS2. However, the London-based firm has said it has seen levels of new work grow amid a boost from the Government's infrastructure strategy. Chief executive Alex Vaughan said: 'We have delivered another strong performance in the first half of 2025.' The construction company told shareholders that revenues slid by 17.8% to £525.4 million for the six months to June 30, compared with the same period a year earlier. It said this was driven by weaker revenues from road projects due to the completion of recent work and the Government's rephasing of HS2. Earlier this year, the Government said development on HS2 would be delayed, meaning its first phase would not be completed as originally planned by 2033. Costain stressed that it saw growth from other parts of its transport business, with increased work linked to Heathrow airport. It also saw stronger revenues in its energy, defence and nuclear energy divisions. The firm also reported that adjusted operating profits grew by 3.1% to £16.8 million for the half-year. Costain said the Government's infrastructure strategy and regulatory commitments to improvements across a raft of a sectors will provide the business with more work. In June, the Government said at least £9 billion a year would go to tackling the 'soaring maintenance backlog' and fixing crumbling schools, hospitals and prisons over the next decade under its infrastructure programme. Mr Vaughan said: 'The Government's new Infrastructure Strategy and Infrastructure Pipeline, together with recent regulatory determinations in water, energy and aviation, provide clarity and confidence in the significant growth opportunities in our target markets. 'We are delivering our strategic priorities, investing in the business to support these attractive growth opportunities and are increasingly confident in the Group's growth prospects.'
