India's active COVID cases rise to 7,400; 269 new infections, 9 deaths reported
India's active COVID-19 cases climbed to 7,400 on Saturday, marking a significant increase after a brief period of decline. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the country recorded 269 new infections and nine fatalities in the past 24 hours, sparking fresh concerns about the spread of new subvariants.
Nine fatalities reported; Maharashtra and Kerala worst hit
Among the nine deaths reported, four were from Maharashtra, three from Kerala, and one each from Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan. Health officials confirmed that one of the deceased was a 34-year-old man from Maharashtra, while the remaining eight were elderly patients with pre-existing respiratory and chronic health conditions.
New COVID-19 variants driving surge in infections
Health experts have attributed the recent spike to emerging Omicron subvariants, including
LF.7
, XFG, JN.1, and the newly detected NB.1.8.1. These variants are believed to be more transmissible, although current data suggests symptoms remain mostly mild in vaccinated individuals.

UGC initiates drug abuse awareness modules
1 2 Hyderabad: Students in higher education institutions across the state and the country will soon study drug abuse as part of their curriculum, with topics ranging from alcohol and barbiturates to cocaine. The new course, offered through the SWAYAM portal, will include 35 self-paced modules featuring case studies designed to raise awareness among young adults. Incorporating chapters on the dangers of drug abuse into higher education curricula is seen as essential for raising awareness among students, who are particularly vulnerable due to peer pressure, stress and academic demands. This age group is especially susceptible to experimenting with substances, making education on the associated risks all the more critical, according to a statement from the University Grants Commission (UGC). To reduce stigma The UGC release further noted that such content equips students with an understanding of the harmful physical, mental and social effects of substance abuse. It also promotes responsible decision-making and helps reduce the stigma associated with seeking support. By including this topic, educational institutions foster a healthier, more informed campus environment, ultimately supporting student well-being. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? After ambulance delay, woman delivers stillborn
Palghar: After a 24-year-old woman gave birth to a stillborn girl child in a Nashik hospital on June 11 night, her husband had to carry the infant's body in a bag (thaili) from Nashik to his village in Mokhada (a distance of around 70kms) to bury it. The family also alleged the loss of pregnancy was due to the delay in the arrival of ambulance and lack of tertiary medical facilities at their disposal. The family claimed the mother, Avita Sakharam Kavar, was in pain since early morning June 11, and had called asha workers for help, who in turn called the ambulance services, but in vain. Later, a private vehicle was arranged by asha workers and Avita was taken to the Khodala primary health centre (PHC) but was immediately referred to Mokhada rural hospital as heart beats of the baby couldn't be found. At Mokhada, the baby was declared dead, and since Ankita had high fever and Mokhada rural hospital didn't have any tertiary facilities, she was again referred to Nashik civil hospital, where she was operated on and the stillborn was handed over to the couple. Since the couple couldn't afford an ambulance, Sakharam (Avita's husband) carried the dead infant in a bag to their village in Jogalwadi, Mokhada taluka, in a bus. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The baby was later buried in the village. Both the husband and wife work as labourers in a brick kiln in Ambernath. The family also claimed that on both the occasions, from home to Khodala and from Khodala to Mokhada rural hospital, the ambulance took hours to arrive. Santosh Chaudhari, a medical officer with Palghar district, said the woman came to Jogalwadi village in the month of March, checked by asha workers and found to be normal. He also confirmed that since there were no tertiary treatment facilities at the Mokhada rural hospital and for the patient's well-being, it was important that she be sent to a tertiary hospital, and hence she was further referred to a Nashik hospital.
