Monsoon session likely in mid-July, crowd management bill to steal focus
Bengaluru: Although BJP, the principal opposition party, has been demanding a special session of the legislature to debate the recent stadium stampede tragedy, the govt is leaning towards holding a regular monsoon session in mid-July.
Authorities have tentatively fixed July 14 as the start date for the session though the cabinet, will discuss the session's schedule at the next meeting.
"A two-week session with 10 working days in mid-July fits well before the festival season," said a senior official from the parliamentary affairs department. "The cabinet may either set the dates or authorise the chief minister to decide and advise the governor accordingly."
By convention, the gap between two sessions should not exceed six months. Since the budget session — the previous one — ended on March 21, the govt has until the third week of Sept to convene the next session.
But CM Siddaramaiah is said to be in favour of an early session amid BJP's pressure over the stampede tragedy that claimed 11 lives during RCB's IPL victory celebrations. Siddaramaiah reportedly wants to end the public discourse by facilitating a debate on the incident in the assembly.

Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar, addressing the controversy, urged the opposition to use parliamentary procedures rather than protests. "It is an unfortunate incident," he said. "We took stern action, including suspending police officials and ordering a judicial probe. Let the opposition debate the issue in the assembly instead of creating a public spectacle for political gain."
The session is expected to begin with the assembly ratifying revocation of suspension of 18 BJP legislators.
These MLAs were suspended on the last day of the previous session on charges of indiscipline and unruly behaviour, even as the opposition demanded a judicial investigation over the alleged honey trap targeting cooperation minister KN Rajanna and other members. Speaker UT Khader decided to revoke the suspensions after Siddaramaiah intervened, but rules demand the decision must be ratified through a resolution.
The session is likely to be stormy as BJP and JD(S) are preparing to corner the govt over the stampede tragedy. In response, the govt plans to introduce a bill on crowd management.
"We want to bring in a policy for crowd management and it is the need of the hour. We will prepare a framework, and a bill may be introduced," said Shivakumar.
Parliamentary affairs minister HK Patil said the govt has already prepared a draft bill, while home minister G Parameshwara, whose department is expected to pilot the bill, said standard operating procedures on managing crowds during big events are being considered for inclusion in the proposed legislation.
Other legislations likely to come up include the Gig Workers Welfare Bill, currently in the form of an ordinance, and the Rohith Vemula Bill aimed at protecting Dalit students in higher educational institutions. The contentious proposed bill to increase work hours in the private sector is also expected to generate debate, along with the proposed caste census.

Dodgers deny ICE agents entry to stadium amid protests and immigration crackdown in Los Angeles
The Los Angeles Dodgers found themselves at the center of a citywide immigration controversy on Thursday, after the team denied entry to federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents who arrived at Dodger Stadium as demonstrators protested ongoing raids throughout the city. According to statements from the Dodgers, a convoy of ICE agents and Department of Homeland Security vehicles arrived at several parking lot entrances near the stadium early Thursday morning, seeking permission to access the grounds. The organization made it clear: 'ICE agents came to Dodger Stadium and requested permission to access the parking lots. They were denied entry to the grounds by the organization,' the team announced on social media. On this, the ICE responded to the Dodgers on social media saying "False. We were never there." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villa For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas in Dubai | Search ads Learn More Undo Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin clarified that the agents were not attempting to enter the stadium, adding, 'This had nothing to do with the Dodgers. Customs and Border Protection vehicles were in the stadium parking lot very briefly, unrelated to any operation or enforcement'. Nevertheless, the presence of federal agents- faces covered, arriving in SUVs and cargo vans- sparked immediate concern and confusion among fans, staff, and city officials. Live Events Shortly after the agents' arrival, demonstrators gathered at the stadium's Gate E entrance, wielding signs reading 'ICE out of LA!' and 'I Like My Ice Crushed,' while chanting for the agents to leave. Television footage captured Los Angeles Police Department officers forming a barrier between the agents and the protesters, as the standoff drew city council members and local media to the scene. Council member Eunisses Hernandez, who was in communication with Dodgers officials and the mayor's office, emphasized the distinction between public and private property: 'Businesses and corporations have the power to say, 'Not on my property.' And so we're waiting to see that movement happen here'. The Dodgers, whose fanbase is predominantly Latino, have faced mounting pressure to take a public stance on the immigration crackdown . The organization was reportedly preparing to announce plans to assist immigrant communities affected by the recent events. Veteran player Kiké Hernández voiced his dismay on Instagram , expressing solidarity with Latinos who have been profiled, detained, or separated from their families by ICE. Despite the day's tensions, the Dodgers confirmed that their scheduled game against the San Diego Padres would proceed as planned, with more than 50,000 fans expected in attendance.

Have differences with some in Congress: Tharoor
Congress Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor said on Thursday that he had 'differences of opinion' with some in the party leadership and alleged that he was not invited to campaign for the byelection in Nilambur, but added that the party, its values and workers were very dear to him. Tharoor was speaking to reporters in his constituency of Thiruvananthapuram after returning to the state following engagements in the UK and Delhi. When asked why he was absent from the party's campaign in Nilambur, which went to the polling booth on Thursday, Tharoor replied, 'It is true that I was not invited (to campaign). As you know, I was abroad for around 16 days. Even then, I did not get an invite or even a missed regardless of whether I campaigned or not, I want the Congress to win in Nilambur. We have a good candidate there, and our workers have worked very hard.' The Thiruvananthapuram MP also dwelt briefly on the speculations of friction between him and the Congress leadership in the backdrop of Congress leader Udit Raj's comment that Tharoor had become a 'super spokesperson of the BJP'. 'There are some differences of opinion with the current Congress leadership. It will be good if I speak to them within the party about such issues. Today is not the day for such discussions. There is a by-election happening today. The candidate is my friend and may he win. There will be a good result,' he said. Tharoor, the MP from Thiruvananthapuram, has faced criticism from some Congress leaders for his comments after Operation Sindoor and for accepting the Centre's invite to head one of the multi-party delegations that travelled to international capitals to present India's stance on cross-border terrorism and Pakistan. On Thursday, Tharoor defended himself. The interaction with the PM was solely regarding the delegation visits, the discussions held with leaders of foreign countries etc. It was not a venue to discuss internal politics. I have always held that there is a place for politics and another for national interests. In 2014, when I was the chief of the foreign affairs commission WHAT IS THIS? , I had said then there were only Indian national interests in my mind, not the foreign policy interests of the Congress or the BJP,' he said. 'What I said during Operation Sindoor was my personal opinion. As an Indian, I have that right. If my country needed me and if the government asked me to, I would always be ready,' he added. Nilambur fell vacant after sitting MLA PV Anvar resigned following differences with LDF leadership. The contest is between Congress's Aryadan Shoukath, CPM's M Swaraj and Mohan George of BJP. The seat recorded a provisional turnout of 73.26%. On Thursday, Congress MP from Kasaragod, Rajmohan Unnithan had said that while Tharoor's body remained with the Congress, his loyalty lay with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. State Congress chief Sunny Joseph dismissed Tharoor's statements. 'Usually during by-elections, invites are not sent out to leaders (to come and campaign). During most parts of the campaign, Tharoor was out of the state and the country. If he had come, it would have been good. But we are aware of his style of politics and his busy schedule,' Joseph said. Tharoor's name had figured in the list of star campaigners given by the Congress for the bypoll.

US futures pare losses as Trump weighs Iran role
US equity futures moderated declines as President Donald Trump weighs whether to back Israel militarily in its conflict with Iran. Contracts for the S&P 500 were down around 0.3% from Wednesday's close in early Asia hours, compared with a 0.9% drop on Thursday when US markets were closed for the Juneteenth holiday. Shares in Japan and Australia held to tight ranges. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Average Cost To Rent A Private Jet May Surprise You (View Prices) Private Jet I Search Ads Learn More Undo While traders were offered some short-term clarity as the White House said Trump will decide within two weeks whether to strike Iran, the remarks did little to resolve broader uncertainty around potential US involvement and the risk of renewed energy-driven inflation. 'If the US does strike, you're going to see a big knee-jerk reaction,' said Neil Wilson, investor strategist at Saxo UK. 'No one will be wanting to make big long bets.' Brent crude fell around 2% Friday to moderate gains from earlier in the week. Treasuries were steady while the dollar weakened. The yen strengthened to around 145 per dollar. Live Events Traders' sentiment turned more cautious following a Bloomberg report that senior US officials are preparing for a possible strike on Iran in the coming days. Markets were already on edge after the Federal Reserve downgraded its estimates for growth this year and projected higher inflation. Israel struck more of Iran's nuclear sites on Thursday and warned its attacks could bring down Tehran's leadership as both sides awaited a decision from Trump on whether to join the offensive. Some extreme scenarios resulting from increased US involvement in the Israel-Iran war could push oil prices as high as $130 to $150 a barrel, particularly if Iran retaliates in a major way, said Jennifer McKeown, chief global economist at Capital Economics Ltd. Such a development would pause further policy easing by central banks, she said. 'Even though central banks would like to think that would be a temporary impact, I think it would be a brave central bank that would cut interest rates,' McKeown said on Bloomberg TV. Brent futures have been pricing in a geopolitical premium of about $8 a barrel since Israel and Iran began attacking each other last week, according to a survey of analysts and traders. US intervention in the conflict would bolster that further, but exactly how much would depend on the nature of the involvement, the nine respondents said. In Thailand, the political fate of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra remained uncertain after mounting opposition calls and street protests for her to resign following a leaked phone call in which she criticized her army. Elsewhere in Asia, data set for release Friday include 1-year and 5-year Loan Prime Rates in China, inflation in Japan, and foreign exchange reserves in India. Markets are closed in New Zealand. Japan's Finance Ministry will seek feedback from market players later Friday over its planned reductions to super-long bond issuance as it takes steps to quell market turbulence.
