During Kangethe's arraignment last year, Assistant District Attorney Mark Lee said that Mbitu lived in Whitman and was last seen at about 11 p.m. on Oct. 30, 2023, leaving a longterm care facility in Halifax, where she worked as a nurse.
Lee said Kangethe took a Lyft ride to the facility and they left in his Toyota Venza that she had been driving.
'Whether by coercion or not,' Kangethe drove Mbitu from her workplace, Lee said.
Sometime between leaving Halifax and arriving at his home in Lowell, Kangethe 'brutally attacked' Mbitu with a knife, delivering '10 wounds just to her face and neck alone,' Lee said.

seen on video driving at different locations in Lowell and several neighboring towns, Lee said.
'Failing to find a place to dispose of her, Mr. Kangethe discarded her cellphone instead in a dumpster in Chelsea just before driving to Logan Airport,' Lee said.
On Oct. 31, 2023, Kangethe twice answered calls from Mbitu's friends and coworkers, who were frantically trying to find out why she never showed up for work that morning, Lee said. On both occasions, Kangethe would not put Mbitu on the line and said she had sustained an injury.
Kangethe drove to Logan, where he parked the car and left her body facedown in the front seat, with the seat reclined and her body covered with bags and other items, Lee said.
Kangethe then boarded a flight to Nairobi, Lee said.
'Everything about Mr. Kangethe's flight from the United States suggests that he intended it to be permanent,' Lee said. 'He left with a one-way ticket.'

After the arraignment, Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden described Mbitu as a caregiver and nurse who was 'beloved by every patient that she served' and 'a beautiful soul and a wonderful daughter and a loving sister.'
His words were echoed by Ann Mbitu, the victim's sister, whose statement was read outside court by a relative.

'When I lost my sister, I lost a personal friend, a confidante, and the only person I knew I could speak to,' the sister said. 'We will continue to fight ... until this coward is locked up and never sees the light again or gets to hurt another family and take their loved one away from them.'

Maine police officer arrested by ICE agrees to voluntarily leave the country

OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine — A Maine police officer arrested by immigration authorities has agreed to voluntarily leave the country, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Monday. ICE arrested Old Orchard Beach Police Department reserve Officer Jon Luke Evans, of Jamaica, on July 25, as part of the agency's effort to step up immigration enforcement. Officials with the town and police department have said federal authorities previously told them Evans was legally authorized to work in the U.S. An ICE representative reached by telephone told the Associated Press on Monday that a judge has granted voluntary departure for Evans and that he could leave as soon as that day. The representative did not provide other details about Evans' case. Evans' arrest touched off a dispute between Old Orchard Beach officials and ICE. Police Chief Elise Chard has said the department was notified by federal officials that Evans was legally permitted to work in the country, and that the town submitted information via the Department of Homeland Security's E-Verify program prior to Evans' employment. Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin then accused the town of 'reckless reliance' on the department's E-Verify program. E-Verify is an online system that allows employers to check if potential employees can work legally in the U.S. The town is aware of reports that Evans plans to leave the country voluntarily, Chard said Monday. 'The town reiterates its ongoing commitment to meeting all state and federal laws regarding employment,' Chard said in a statement. 'We will continue to rely on the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form and the E-Verify database to confirm employment eligibility.' ICE's detainee lookup website said Monday that Evans was being held at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls, Rhode Island. However, a representative for Wyatt said Evans had been transferred to an ICE facility in Burlington, Massachusetts. ICE officials did not respond to requests for comment on the discrepancy. It was unclear if Evans was represented by an attorney, and a message left for him at the detention facility was not returned. ICE officials said in July that Evans overstayed his visa and unlawfully attempted to purchase a firearm. WMTW-TV reported Monday that Evans' agreement to a voluntary departure means he will be allowed to leave the U.S. at his own expense to avoid being deported. Whittle writes for the Associated Press.

Surf rescue under Pismo Beach Pier captured in viral video

A video posted on Aug. 13 on TikTok documented a Pismo Beach lifeguard rescuing a surfer who appeared to be caught under the pier, gaining the attention of over 100,000 viewers on the platform. On Tuesday, Aug. 12, at around 2 p.m., radio communication between Pismo Beach Lifeguard Towers 2 and 3 alerted those on staff about four people caught under the pier, Pismo Beach Chief Batallion Paul Lee told The Tribune. The identity of the individuals who were rescued was not publicly available. Three of the four people were motioned by lifeguards to move safely to the north side of the pier, while one surfer, whose surfboard leash was wrapped around their leg, remained stuck alongside one of the pier's pilings, Lee said. The pier's pilings hold a collection of built-up sea glass and razor-like barnacles that can easily cut or scrape skin, according to Lee, though the surfer who was eventually rescued by lifeguards came out with only a couple of scratches. No one was hospitalized, Lee said. Pismo Beach lifeguards conduct around 30 to 100 rescues a year, according to Lee. This year, lifeguards at Pismo Beach have conducted about 50 rescues, though the goal is to prevent the potential for a situation to arise, Lee said. Solve the daily Crossword

Rapist of Lyft driver sentenced to prison in Oklahoma under plea deal

A rapist has been sentenced to life in prison for his attack on a Lyft driver at a Del City park last year. Andre Hunter, 21, of Oklahoma City, pleaded guilty to first-degree rape, kidnapping and other crimes on Monday, Aug. 18. He attacked the driver of the ride-sharing service on April 18, 2024, after she picked him up, police reported. The driver told police he said he was going to kill her by shooting her if she resisted. His punishment was the result of a plea agreement and came one week before his jury trial was to begin in Oklahoma County District Court. 'For 16 months now I have been a prisoner in my own life, bound by chains of anxiety and fear and a deep unshakeable sense of vulnerability but today I am taking back my life,' the victim told Hunter in court Monday. 'You picked the wrong woman to mess with." In a news release, the Oklahoma County District Attorney's Office said the plea agreement provided both certainty and finality. More: Two men, including suspect, die after officer-involved shooting at Enid hospital Sunday Prosecutors said they are able with plea agreements in sexual assault cases "to ensure accountability while sparing victims the trauma of publicly reliving their experiences in court." Hunter said in court he was sorry. Signing off on the deal was District Judge Heather Coyle, who took over the case from District Judge Cindy Truong. The victim criticized Truong last year for letting Hunter out of jail on a so-called TEEM bond while he awaited sentencing for drug and gun offenses. The rape took place two months after his release. "I was raped by him and the judicial system," the victim complained in a written statement. "She is supposed to protect us from people like him but didn't. SHE FAILED ME!!!" Truong did not respond to the criticism directly last year. The judge did say she issued a warrant for Hunter's arrest for violating his bond conditions before the rape. "The Court notified the proper authorities immediately upon issuance of the warrant," she also said. Hunter was arrested in Langston after dropping off the victim. He was tracked down because he had the victim's cellphone. He was located exiting the victim's vehicle. Hunter backed out of pleading guilty in April, even though he had made statements for a presentence report. At that time, he was going to let Judge Coyle decide his punishment. For the presentence report, he said he had lost his mind and could not remember what took place because of his use of ecstasy pills and meth. He also said he dropped out of Midwest City High School after being shot. He was ordered Monday to serve his life sentence after completing a 27-year sentence imposed last year for his drug and gun offenses.
