Beth Mead lauds ‘unbelievable' Ella Toone as England reach Euro 2025 quarters

Georgia Stanway opened the scoring with a 13th-minute penalty before Toone found the top corner and then turned provider for Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo, who sent England into the break with a four-goal lead.
Mead and Aggie Beever-Jones both got on the scoresheet in the second half, while Wales' consolation came from substitute Hannah Cain, a welcome parting gift for the passionate support who had travelled to Switzerland for their first major tournament.
'I think she was unbelievable,' said Mead, who also provided the assist for Beever-Jones.

'I think Tooney is really coming into her own and sometimes in, you know, situations where you feel a little bit low, it brings you to the top of your game and I have completely felt that and done that before, been in a tough place and come back and I think you can see that she's given that kind of aura, that type of energy and she deserves everything she's getting right now because she has worked really hard for it.'
Mead and Toone have both lost parents since England lifted their first major trophy at their home Euros in 2022. Mead's mother, June, died from ovarian cancer in January 2023, while Toone lost her father, Nick, to prostate cancer last September. Toone pointed to the sky after scoring on Sunday night.
Mead added: 'I think we've both said the first game we really struggled a little bit, you know you look to the stands for your person who is standing there and they're not there anymore.
'I think my mum was the first person I would look for in the stands. So I obviously understand what Ella felt in that moment. And it's special to be able to have that moment and think about them and dedicate to them.'
England bounced back from a tournament-opening defeat to France to beat the Netherlands 4-0, but still finished runners-up in Group D after France claimed top spot with a 5-2 victory over the Dutch.

That means England will return to Zurich's familiar Stadion Letzigrund on Thursday night, where they will face Sweden.
'I mean, it doesn't seem like it at the time, but (the France loss) was probably was the best thing that could have happened to us as a team,' added Mead. 'I think it motivated us.
'We had conversations, we figured things out that we maybe needed to. And I think, you don't win or lose a tournament in the first game. I think it's cliché to say it, but you don't and we're now in a position where we're building quite nicely and hopefully we can continue that momentum now we're into the quarter-finals.'
England boss Sarina Wiegman agreed it looked like her side were enjoying themselves, adding: 'That's what it looks like!
'Really good. Six goals, I think what we wanted to do was dictate the game, and that is what we did, so that's really good to see, and the most important thing is that we are through, and out of this very hard group.'

Erik ten Hag claims Antony is 'like a son to me' as he reveals his stance on signing Man United's £86m outcast for a THIRD time

Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has claimed that Antony is 'like a son to me' amid suggestions that he could be reunited with the winger at Bayer Leverkusen. Antony has been heavily linked with a permanent departure from Old Trafford having spent the second half of last season on loan at Real Betis. Ten Hag, who took charge of Leverkusen this summer, has previously signed Antony on two occasions - bringing him to Ajax from Sao Paulo in 2020 and then to United in 2022. Ten Hag told BILD: 'He has great quality. I signed him twice. He was like a son to me, he still is a son to me. During their time together at United and Ajax, Antony played under ten Hag on 166 occasions. A host of clubs have been linked with Antony this summer, including Brighton, Newcastle and RB Leipzig. Although ten Hag admitted that Leverkusen aren't looking to sign Antony at present, he suggested that the situation could change. He said: 'We're not interested in him at the moment, but we'll see what happens in the future.' There have also been suggestions of a return to Betis, for whom he scored nine goals in 26 games while on loan. Antony signed for United for £86million in 2022 but the move certainly hasn't worked out as expected. In total Antony has made 96 appearances for United, while he has scored 12 goals and provided five assists. Antony won the FA Cup and League Cup with United while ten Hag was in charge but his future seems to lie away from the club. Ten Hag was sacked by United in October 2024, with Ruben Amorim being brought in to replace him. Leverkusen have already signed two players from Premier League clubs in this transfer window, with Jarell Quansah joining from Liverpool, while goalkeeper Mark Flekken arrived from Brentford. Ten Hag stated that Leverkusen aren't looking to sign Antony but the situation could change However, they lost Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong to Liverpool.

Hamza Igamane a Rangers 'risk' as surging Lille talks see transfer rivals pull out amid De Jong intel leak

Russell Martin has a big decision to make on the striker before the crucial Champions League clash with Panathinaikos Rangers have been told they are RIGHT not to risk Hamza Igamane for the Champions League qualifier with Panathinaikos next Tuesday. ‌ It comes with the club standing firm on their £15million valuation of the striker amid ongoing talks with Lille - with reports suggesting one suitor has now dropped out of the race to land the 22-year-old. ‌ Igamane impressed in his debut Ibrox campaign - netting 16 goals for the Light Blues after a £1.7m move from AS FAR last summer. ‌ That has sparked discussions with the Ligue 1 side over a potential move - and Rangers new owners 49ers Enterprises are determined to land a bumper profit in the 22-year-old with the Glasgow giants holding out for a £15m payday. And while Igamane has already agreed personal terms over a move no formal bid has been tabled - with Lille president Olivier Letang previously admitting the club were in no hurry to get a deal done. But Foot Mercato now report that the club are re-launching their bid to land the striker and want him to be their "next" recruit. ‌ With the Light Blues to command a bumper fee, former Ibrox striker Gordon Dalziel insists that it would be a gamble for Russell Martin to play the Morocco international. However, he reckons Cyriel Dessers should be recalled despite interest from AEK. He told Clyde 1 Superscoreboard: 'If I was in the situation, for example Igamane, and they are talking figures around the £14-15m for him - I totally understand Rangers wouldn't risk him. "But, I would certainly risk Dessers, because Dessers isn't going to get you anywhere near that.' ‌ But the valuation from Rangers has reportedly seen Marseille rule out a move, with Le 10 Sport that Lille's Ligue 1 rivals are unwilling to go beyond €10million (£8.6million). In terms of a replacement for Dessers and Igamane, Luuk de Jong is reportedly on Rangers' radar - as he looks to have pulled the curtain down on his time at PSV Eindhoven. The 34-year-old had been training with the Eredivise champions to maintain his fitness as he weights up his options. ‌ But the club have now handed his No. 9 jersey to Ricardo Pepi and signed Borussia Monchengladbach forward Alassane Plea as a successor. Former Dutch defender Bram van Polen claims that he has heard whispers that De Jong's time is officially over at the Eredivise champions as he looks for an "adventure" away from the Netherlands. He told ESPN's Voetbalpraat: "They've moved on now. I would understand a foreign adventure from his (De Jong's) perspective. "And perhaps he's become worried about his minutes. Last year, you could already see things declining with Pepi. And now, with another title, he's saying goodbye on a high note."

When do England play next? Lionesses semi-final details after dramatic penalty win

England beat Sweden in the quarter-finals of the Women's European Championship on Thursday and Sarina Wiegman's Lionesses will take on Italy for a place in the final England kept their hopes of retaining the Women's European Championship alive after beating Sweden via a dramatic penalty shootout. The Lionesses missed most of their seven spot kicks but remarkably still advanced to the semi-finals, having come from 2-0 down in normal time. ‌ Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang both scored in a three-minute turnaround as Sweden's lead was vanquished late on. Bronze was one of only three England players to score their penalties, with four of their team-mates failing to convert. ‌ Sweden had the chance to win the shootout after four efforts each when goalkeeper Jennifer Falk boldly stepped up to take one. But fittingly for the chaotic shootout, she skied the ball over the bar. ‌ The Lionesses - helped by goalkeeper Hannah Hampton saving two penalties - were more clinical from there on out and made the Swedes, who won all three of their group matches while conceding just one goal, pay the price. Sarina Wiegman's defending champions will now face Italy for a place in the final. The Italians finished second in their group behind tournament favourites Spain. They edged past Norway on Wednesday thanks to Cristiana Girelli's 90th-minute winner. When do the Lionesses play next? England face Italy at 8pm BST on Tuesday, July 22. The fixture will be played at the Stade de Geneve in Lancy, just a few kilometres away from Geneva. ‌ The winner of the contest will go through to the final of Euro 2025 against one of Spain, Switzerland, France or Germany. That match will be held at the St Jakob Park in Basel at 5pm on Sunday, July 27. England won the last Euros final in 2022, famously beating Germany at Wembley. Wiegman and her players will be dreaming of repeating their heroics from three years ago but must first recover from a taxing night in Zurich. ‌ Which TV channel will show the game? ITV have the rights to broadcast live coverage of England's semi-final in the UK and the match will be shown on ITV1. Fans can also live stream the game via the ITV Hub. Wiegman revealed post-match that she was 'very emotional' after a 'crazy game'. "Today I thought about three times we were out," the Dutch coach admitted. ‌ She also gave an update on captain Leah Williamson, who limped off in the second half of extra-time after she rolled her ankle. "She'll be assessed tomorrow," Wiegman confirmed. "I don't know [how she is, but] she couldn't stay on the pitch anymore." Wiegman wasn't impressed with how England started the match, as they found themselves 2-0 down after 25 minutes. "We wanted to start the game a lot better than we did," she acknowledged. "That's not a good start. "Then really quickly they scored a second goal and we were struggling coming into the game. Then you think we wanted to think about how could we help the team. Then we started playing a bit better but we didn't create much. In the second half we were on the ball a lot more."
