Rare 'tsunami' roll cloud hovers over beachgoers in popular destination spot
A "tsunami" roll, also known as a roll cloud, filled the sky on Sunday following a heat wave, according to Euro News.
Portugal's temperatures hit over 107 °F with heavy rain, thunderstorms and hail.
The roll sits low in the sky in a horizontal tube-shaped arcus cloud and is "relatively rare," according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
"Roll clouds usually appear to be 'rolling' about a horizontal axis, but should not be confused with funnel clouds," said NWS.
Stephen Corfidi, a meteorologist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), previously told National Geographic the clouds are typically associated with thunderstorms.
Roll clouds "can last for several hours and extend for several hundred miles," Corfidi told the outlet.
"The 'shear' across the inversion sets up a rolling motion much like that of a rolling pin used in a bakery," said Corfidi.
Beachgoers took to social media to share videos and discuss the phenomenon.
"It was nuts to have experienced this rolling cloud in the north of Portugal. Felt like a tsunami out of a movie," said one X user.
Another user wrote, "This cloud rolled in like an actual tsunami over Portugal."
"Looks scary, but cool," posted an X user.
A user added, "This does look fricking cool, tbh."

Hurricane Erin lashing Maryland beaches; improving weather on Friday
Marylanders awakened to another cloudy, damp day as a slow-moving front lingers just south of the state. That alone would be enough to keep skies gray and temperatures unseasonably cool through this evening, but it's Hurricane Erin that's commanding the most attention along the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic coastline. With sustained winds near 100 mph, Erin made its closest pass to southern Maryland this morning. While Erin is staying offshore, its large wind field and powerful seas are having a major effect here at home. Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for Maryland's coastal waters and the Chesapeake Bay, where the most hazardous conditions are expected through this evening. Northeast winds are already gusting between 30 and 40 mph, with even stronger gusts topping 45 mph possible over the lower Chesapeake Bay. Seas are building rapidly—buoys are already showing 6 to 9 feet, but wave heights offshore are forecast to climb as high as 13 to 18 feet, with the potential for 20-foot seas offshore. Even inside the Bay, wave heights of 4 to 8 feet will make conditions dangerous for small craft. The pounding surf will also mean trouble along Maryland's shoreline. Waves of 10 to 20 feet are expected offshore, raising the risk of dune erosion and coastal flooding during high tide cycles. Rip currents will be extremely dangerous, with breaking waves topping 8 feet near the beaches. Swimmers should stay out of the water, with a high rip current risk likely to persist through the weekend. For the rest of today, expect plenty of clouds, occasional drizzle, and highs stuck in the 70s—roughly 10 degrees below normal for late August. Conditions should slowly improve Friday as Erin pulls farther away and weak high pressure builds in. Sunshine and drier air return to Maryland by Friday afternoon, with more pleasant weather expected Saturday. But the break won't last long. By Sunday, a new system will push in from the west, bringing another round of showers and thunderstorms. Some of those storms could turn strong before a cold front clears the state Monday. Behind it, Maryland is in for a refreshing stretch of weather—sunshine, lower humidity, and highs only in the 70s by Tuesday and Wednesday and lows at night in the 50s!

Record EU wildfires burnt more than 1 mn hectares in 2025: AFP analysis
Wildfires have so far ravaged more than one million hectares (2.5 million acres) in the European Union in 2025, a record since statistics began in 2006, according to an AFP analysis of data from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS). Surpassing the annual record of 988,524 hectares burnt in 2017, the figure reached 1,015,731 hectares by midday Thursday, representing an area larger than Cyprus. This calculation is based on a total compiled by AFP from estimates by country by EFFIS, at a time when Spain and Portugal are still battling wildfires. Four countries in the European Union -- Spain, Cyprus, Germany, and Slovakia -- have already experienced their worst year in two decades of existing data. Spain is struggling with numerous fires in the west of the country, which have claimed four lives. By far it is the most affected EU country by fires, with more than 400,000 hectares burnt, accounting for nearly 40 percent of the EU total. Portugal, which holds the EU record of 563,530 hectares burnt in 2017, is the second-most affected EU country. It has never had an area of this size (nearly 274,000 hectares) burnt as of August 21. Romania follows with 126,000 hectares while in France, 35,600 hectares of forest have been reduced to ashes, mostly in the Aude region, which was ravaged by a massive fire in early August.
