Philippines reports 1st case of highly pathogenic avian flu strain
Manila, May 7 (UNI) The Philippine Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Animal Industry on Wednesday said it confirmed the detection of the country's first case of "High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza Type A Subtype H5N9" in Camarines Sur province, southeast of Manila.
The bureau said in a statement that on April 30, its Animal Disease Diagnosis and Reference Laboratory reported positive results from duck samples collected during a routine surveillance.
"Subtype H5N9, while highly pathogenic in birds, poses low risk to humans based on current global assessments," the statement said.
Following the detection, the bureau said it promptly endorsed disease control measures to their regional office, including immediate quarantine, culling, surveillance, and coordination with local authorities.
It also notified the Department of Health to monitor any potential human exposure.
In coordination with local government units, the bureau said it will implement sustained disease control operations, including surveillance within 1 km and 7 km zones and thorough cleaning and disinfection of affected sites to prevent further spread.

Mamata advises people not to panic over Covid-19
Kolkata, June 9 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said there was no immediate concern about Covid-19 and advised people not to panic. She said if anyone has any problem, like a cold, fever, or cough, then they should visit the government hospitals to clear their doubts. Addressing the media at Nabanna, the state secretariat, the Chief Minister said they had a meeting with the health officials to assess the situation arising out of reports of the return of Covid-19 elsewhere in the country. She said there was no need to panic. "We had a meeting to take stock of the situation in the government health sector, given reports of Covid-19 elsewhere, and we came to the conclusion that there is no need to panic on the issue," Banerjee told reporters. She said if anyone has any doubt, he or she could visit government hospitals to avoid unnecessary expenditure, as the hospitals have all the necessary infrastructure to provide adequate services. She said India reported only 4 to 5 thousand cases so far in a country with 140 crore people, and the WHO declared it endemic and not a pandemic. A separate report on Monday said the total number of active Covid cases in India touched 6,491 as 358 fresh cases of the virus were reported in the last 24 hours in the country, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Kidney diseases on the rise in Himachal: Shimla tops with 39.9% cases
Shimla, June 9 (UNI) Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is emerging as a growing health concern in Himachal Pradesh, with Shimla district recording the highest prevalence of 39.9 per cent among reported cases, according to a recent survey conducted by medical students under the supervision of Dr RS Ranta, professor, research department, Himachal Pradesh University. The study, based on data from 2,609 patients who sought treatment at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) Shimla between 2014 and 2023, was carried out by students of IGMC in collaboration with the Nephrology Department. Dr Kamakshi, assistant professor of nephrology at IGMC, stated that CKD is primarily caused by high blood pressure, diabetes, elevated urea levels in the blood, and protein leakage in urine. Apart from Shimla, other districts reporting a high number of CKD cases include Mandi (14.5%), Solan (10%), and Kullu (8.6%). In contrast, Lahaul-Spiti recorded the lowest percentage, with only 0.6% cases attributed to lower population density and different lifestyle patterns. The data also revealed a gender disparity, with 60.2% of the patients being male and 39.8% female. A significant number of cases (over 68%) were found in patients above the age of 57. Shockingly, 17% of the patients were diagnosed at the end stage of kidney failure. Doctors warn that irregular lifestyles, delayed diagnosis, and lack of awareness are contributing to the rising CKD burden. Dr. Kamakshi emphasized the importance of early screening, better dietary habits, and timely intervention to reduce the disease's impact. With CKD cases continuing to climb, experts urge the state health department to step up preventive measures and launch targeted awareness campaigns, especially in high-risk districts.

Emergency surgeries stopped at country's prestigious Sree Chitra Institute
Thiruvananthapuram, June 9 (UNI) Several emergency surgeries were stopped indefinitely due to a shortage of equipment at the country's prestigious 'Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST). Surgeries in the Interventional Radiology department were stopped for the last few days as the patients admitted for emergency surgeries have also been discharged, sources told UNI. The companies supplying equipment say that they are not able to supply it at the old rate following the increase in price of foreign-made surgical equipment. Sree Chithira purchases surgical equipment only through the Government e Marketplace (GeM) Portal as per the Central Government's instructions. There is also a serious allegation that an unholy nexus between the supply companies demanding a price hike of surgical equipment and a top few in the Institute led to the current crisis. UNI DS ARN
