Experts raise red flags over mounting crisis threatening food supply for over 30 million people this summer: 'We are facing unprecedented challenges'
The food security crisis comes despite recent rainfall, as resurgent violence and economic challenges devastate farming communities.
An analysis by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Food Programme, and Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Agriculture revealed that about 25 million people are already experiencing food crises nationwide.
"With the concerted efforts of the government, CH stakeholders, and the international community, we can move closer to alleviating hunger and reducing suffering for Nigeria's most vulnerable populations," said Kouacou Koffy, FAO country representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, per Aljazirah News.
"We are facing unprecedented challenges affecting livelihoods and food and nutrition security globally, regionally, and nationally.
The World Bank estimates that more than half of Nigerians now live below the poverty line, a sharp rise from 40.1% in 2018 to 56% today. This economic decline makes families even more vulnerable to food insecurity.

The crisis in Nigeria shows how climate challenges combine with human conflict to create food emergencies. Farming communities in states like Benue, known as Nigeria's "food basket," have faced horrific violence, with Amnesty International documenting over 1,300 people killed in nearby Plateau State alone between December 2023 and February 2024.
Local farmer Husseini Dodo from Niger State pointed out the pattern: "All these communities constantly being attacked in Niger, Plateau, Benue, Borno, Edo, Ebonyi, Enugu States are all farming communities. So I think it is a deliberate move to starve the nation."

Nigeria's youth hold the key to the country's success

With no capital or support, Tunde joined the growing exodus of young Nigerians. He didn't want to go – but had to. More than 60 percent of Nigeria's population is under the age of 30. That should be a gold mine for innovation, energy and talent. Yet, instead of driving economic growth and transformation, this generation is being stifled by a political establishment frozen in the past. Where other nations face ageing populations and shrinking workforces, Nigeria teems with young minds ready to work, build and lead. By 2050, the country is projected to become the third most populous in the world. The potential is undeniable, but the nation still limps under the weight of corruption, collapsing infrastructure and policy paralysis. A Demographic Advantage Wasted The economic logic is simple: a youthful population can fuel sustained economic growth. More workers, more entrepreneurs, more innovators and more consumers. All the ingredients for a prosperous and dynamic economy. But youth alone is not a solution. A country can overflow with talent and still starve without capable leadership. Nigeria seems to be living proof. Raw numbers do not build nations - vision does. Meanwhile, nations like South Korea, Singapore and China have shown precisely what is possible when good governance meets demographic strength. They haven't just spoken about potential; they have turned it into policy. Investment in education, built digital infrastructure and their own people means that today these countries stand as leaders in technology, manufacturing and innovation. Nigeria has the people but it does not yet have the leadership. A Government Out of Touch Under President Bola Tinubu, promises of job creation for young people have fallen flat. Late last year, the government claimed that unemployment dropped from 33 to just 4.3 percent - a statistical sleight of hand, as anyone working even one-hour-per-week is counted as fully employed. It is a claim that does not fool the millions of young Nigerians searching for meaningful work. Meanwhile, public education is in freefall. Classrooms lack roofs, teachers go unpaid, and the institutions shaping young minds are starved of investment. At the same time, Nigeria's boldest young entrepreneurs are being choked by bureaucracy and are moving abroad for opportunity. Startups opting to remain in the country face red tape, high costs, and a system rigged for the political elite. A recent poll found that 83 percent of Nigerians now have little or no trust in the Tinubu administration, a moral failing as well as a technocratic one. All the while, the economy is struggling. Inflation is a daily reality for young Nigerians. According to Human Rights Watch, the cost of cooking a single pot of rice has risen by 19 percent in just six months. The situation is unsustainable, and young people from rural villages and bustling urban communities alike are feeling the bite. They aren't asking for handouts, they are asking for an administration which truly believes in their potential and has the will to back it. What Must be Done If Nigeria is to escape this vicious cycle of governmental dysfunction and generational disappointment, it must confront a truth too often ignored; the country's youth is its most valuable resource. These youth are not statistics. They are the nation's engine. The burden of change therefore doesn't fall on governmental alone. Nigeria's youth must move from the margins of its politics to the mainstream. One figure offering a different vision is Prince Adewole Adebayo, presidential candidate for the Social Democratic Party. A respected lawyer and entrepreneur, Adebayo seems to recognise how youth and prosperity are linked. One area Adebayo believes could be revolutionised by the innovation and technological know-how of Nigeria's youth is agriculture. He describes it as a sector where technology, innovation, and youthful entrepreneurship can collide to create jobs, grow exports, and secure food sovereignty. he insists, Adebayo has personally sponsored the education of over 2,000 Nigerians to provide them with high-quality educational experiences. He has repeatedly spoken of the need to trust young people to lead innovation and shape the future. But that trust must be matched by a government that delivers with systematic reform: dismantling the systemic corruption that has long buckled Nigeria's institutions and replacing it with faith in the capabilities of its youth population. Nigeria at a Crossroads Nigeria stands at a crossroads: succumb to inertia or push for renewal. The vast potential of the nation's youth could be wasted if it is not utilised effectively. Young Nigerians are tired of empty promises, they want a government that works for them, not one content with their struggles. Ahead of the 2027 election, Nigeria's young people must become more involved in the political process which continues to ignore them. Only through direct involvement can they bring about lasting change.

Nigerian Immigration issues advisory to citizens travelling to the US
The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a formal advisory urging citizens to strictly follow the conditions of their U.S. visas, following concerns by the U.S. government over widespread misuse. The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) advised citizens to adhere to U.S. visa conditions to avoid penalties Students studying in the U.S. must maintain full-time academic status to prevent visa cancellation. This advisory aligns Nigeria alongside other African nations in promoting global mobility compliance standards. In a statement, NIS spokesperson ACI Akinlabi said, 'The NIS wishes to inform the general public about the concerns raised by the US government over the misuse of visas by Nigerians.' He warned that violations—such as overstaying or unauthorized activities —could lead to visa revocation, deportation, or permanent travel bans. 'Breach of visa conditions, including overstaying, may attract severe penalties, including removal from the U.S. and permanent ineligibility for future travel,' he said. Akinlabi also advised Nigerian students in the U.S. to maintain full-time academic status: 'Nigerian students in the U.S. must remain in active study. Withdrawal, absenteeism, or change of academic program without notification may lead to visa cancellation and loss of future eligibility.' He further noted that consular officers can deny tourist visas if they suspect the applicant intends to give birth in the U.S.: 'The NIS continues to collaborate with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigeria is not included in any expanded visa restrictions. Compliance with visa regulations is essential to safeguard legitimate travel by Nigerian citizens.' U.S-Nigeria travel advisory As of mid-July 2025, the United States maintains a Level 3 travel advisory for Nigeria, urging citizens to reconsider travel due to persistent threats from crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, armed gangs, and inadequate healthcare services. In addition to security concerns, the U.S. government has also issued fresh visa-related warnings to Nigerian applicants. On July 8, 2025, the U.S. Department of State revised its visa reciprocity policy, reducing the validity of most non-immigrant, non-diplomatic visas for Nigerian citizens to three months, single entry. Previously issued visas remain valid under their original terms. Furthermore, in a July 28, 2025 memo, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria warned that travel primarily for childbirth purposes, commonly referred to as birth tourism, is prohibited. Visa applications suspected of being linked to this practice may be denied, with applicants subject to heightened scrutiny and possible penalties for misrepresentation. Together, these measures reflect a broader tightening of U.S. immigration controls targeting both security and immigration integrity concerns. Nigeria's issuance of this advisory brings it in line with 36 other African countries facing potential travel restrictions. Authorities and U.S. missions in these countries have warned against visa fraud, overstays, and misuse of travel privileges.
