Dublin Islamic Centre accuses 'radicalised' wing of Muslim community of intimidation
The Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland (ICCI) at Clonskeagh in Dublin has accused a 'radicalised' wing of the Muslim community of intimidating and trying to 'silence' one of its leading members, according to The Irish Times.
A dispute over control of the centre deepened on Friday when the ICCI criticised attacks on social media against Dr Eid Zaher, who had pleaded during the week for a resolution.

In a letter circulated on Muslim-community WhatsApp groups last Wednesday, Dr Zaher, secretary to ICCI imam Sheikh Hussein Halawa, called on an unnamed 'senior official' at the ICCI 'to step down in favour of the public interest and to prevent further harm', The Irish Times reported.
He also appealed to 'wise and thoughtful members of the Muslim community in Ireland to kindly encourage this senior official to step down'.
The ICCI has been closed since an
alleged physical altercation
at a meeting on April 19th, to which gardaí were called.
An auditor has been appointed by the Al Maktoum Foundation, which built and funds the ICCI, to investigate alleged financial irregularities there.

In a statement following social media posts about Dr Zaher's intervention this week, the ICCI said it was 'deeply saddened by the radicalised behaviour of certain individuals within our community who have attacked, intimidated, harassed, insulted and defamed Dr Sheikh Eid [Dr Zaher]'.
He 'is a member of the religious Dawah department of our mosque (which gives religious guidance),' it said. 'Such actions to silence dissenting voices are unacceptable' and were 'a cowardly attack and yet another example of the extremist tendencies of certain elements within the community', it said.
'Freedom of expression is a deeply valued principle and an integral part of the shared norms ... in Irish society,' the ICCI statement said.
'We pray for the enlightenment and reform of these radical elements so that the mosque and centre can reopen in an atmosphere of peace and security for our employees, the children and the community,' it said.

Formal identification has yet to take place after a man's body was discovered in a wooded area near Kilsyth Road in Banknock at around 4.15pm on Friday, June 6. The grim discovery was made just a 15 minutes walk away from the last confirmed sighting of the teenager. Police Scotland said: "Around 4.15pm on Friday, 6 June, 2025, the body of a man was discovered in a wooded area near Kilsyth Road in Banknock. "Formal identification has yet to take place however the family of missing man Cole Cooper, 19, has been informed. Enquiries remain ongoing to establish the full circumstances." We told yesterday how the tragic teen's family said they had lived through a five weeks of "hell" and were planning to launch a fresh search for him. He went missing after visiting a pub in the Denny area before heading to a friend's party at around 3am last month. This Sunday would have marked five "long and painful" weeks since loved ones last heard from Cole. He last made contact on May, 4 and his cousin Aimee Tennie was hoping to gather the largest search for Cole yet and she launched an emotional plea for volunteers and support. Police said he asked a schoolfriend for a lift around 8.45pm that evening.

Family left traumatised after ‘racially motivated' arson attack on car outside home
Police said they were investigating a number of hate crimes in the area A man whose family was targeted in a racially motivated arson attack on Thursday night has said the incident has left them in fear. Police have said they are also reviewing a number of recent incidents in the Rathcoole area to establish whether they are linked. Police also said local patrols in the area following the attack 'will be increased'. The vehicles sustained significant damage during the attack, footage of which was captured on the victim's CCTV camera. Two individuals can be seen approaching the car, before setting it alight and making off down an adjacent street. The victim – a black man – and his partner, who is from the Republic of Ireland, have a young child. "It is ridiculous. It is traumatic. We have an 18-month-old baby and we can't live like this,' he told the Belfast Telegraph. Cars damaged in racially motivated arson attacks in Rathcoole or something along those lines "Both of the cars were burned. I am black and my partner is Irish. This is the fourth time, but I've never seen it like this. This was the biggest attack. "It is embarrassing too. I pay my rent here, nobody has given me this free. I'm not on any benefits or anything. "I don't have any other choice than to be here. I am scared – where am I going to go to?' A PSNI spokesperson said they were investigating a number of reports of criminal damage in the area which they believe to be racially motivated. Chief Inspector Mullan said: 'My officers are investigating two arson incidents which occurred on Thursday evening, June 5. "There have been several other hate crimes in this area in recent weeks and we will be reviewing all of the incidents to try to establish if they are linked. "Enquiries into both incidents, which are being treated as hate crimes, are ongoing, and we are appealing to anyone with any information which might assist us to come forward. "The number to call is 101, quoting reference number 1825 05/06/25. 'These kind of attacks are completely unacceptable, and I want to make it clear that Police will do everything in their power to identify the offenders and bring them before the courts. 'We will be conducting a thorough investigation, and local patrols will be increased in this area as we work to bring this criminality, which has no place in our society, to an end. 'The police cannot prevent and detect this behaviour alone and I would ask for the support of elected representatives, partner agencies, community leaders and local residents to work with us and help us to end these attacks. "These attacks are impacting on families living in the area, some of whom have young families.'
