Clamour for Lord's tickets as Gill & Co. crushes England in Edgbaston

Kolkata: The Indian team's victory at Edgbaston on Sunday fuelled a rush among Kolkata travellers in England and city cricket fans to catch the Lord's Test from July 10. Travel agents say they have been receiving calls for a last-minute trip, while those already in the UK are altering their travel plans to accommodate a visit to London during the match. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now As Shubhman Gill and his team pulled off a spectacular win against England, levelling the series 1-1, Kolkata cricket fan Mahesh Punjabi and his group of 11 friends started regrouping to arrange a quick trip to England. "We were supposed to travel to the UK last week to watch Wimbledon, but it got cancelled. Initially, we were not interested in the India-England series since the Men in Blue were without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, and we believed there wouldn't be a real contest. But the way Gill's young team outplayed England made us rethink. It could be difficult, but we are still planning a dash to Lord's by July 10-11," said Punjabi. Punjabi has been to Australia, Dubai, England, the US, West Indies, and South Africa to watch the Men in Blue in action with his friends, who call themselves 'The 12th Man'. Gill's record-breaking knocks and Akash Deep's Sunday heroics reignited interest in the series, which could lead many, now in England for vacation and to visit family and friends, to try and grab a Lord's ticket, said Manav Soni of the Travel Agents Association of India. Kolkata student Vikram Tejwani, who studies in Scotland, has decided to travel to England after India's stellar performance in the second Test. "I have planned to watch the Lord's Test from the stands with my friends," he said. On the website Viagogo, the price of a Lord's Test ticket ranges between Rs 23,421 and Rs 28,443. The site is still offering 261 tickets for the first day. The win sparked off a demand for Lord's Test tickets among fans, especially those who are already in England, said Anil Punjabi, committee member of the Travel Agents' Federation of India (TAFI). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The interest level has suddenly gone up after India showed that they are good enough to win the series. Watching a match at Lord's is always the perfect icing on a London visit, especially for cricket lovers. We have started receiving requests for tickets from those who travelled through my agency," said Punjabi. Thousands from Kolkata travel to England for vacation and to visit family and friends during May-June, said Soni. "At least a thousand have travelled to watch the Test matches. The Lord's Test is always a big attraction, and we have been receiving requests for tickets. Now, with India staging a comeback, those already in the UK are altering plans to accommodate a trip to London and bet at the Lord's. This summer will be a big Indian one in England, and if the team plays well, there will be late travellers, too," said Soni.

For Someone Of That Stature: Wiaan Mulder Reveals Why He Didnt Break Brian Laras Test Record

South Africa stand-in captain Wiaan Mulder opened up on his decision to declare when he was 34 runs short of breaking Brian's Lara's iconic record of 400 runs in the ongoing second Test of the two-game series against Zimbabwe. Coming in to bat at number three, Mulder captaining South Africa for the first time, was 367 not out off 334 balls at lunch on the second day of the second Test against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo. He was 33 runs behind the 400 not out West Indies legend Lara made against England in Antigua in 2004. It was expected that Mulder would come back after lunch and try to break Lara's historic record. However, in a shocking decision, Mulder declared South Africa's first innings on 626-5 at lunch, deciding to not chase Lara's elusive record in Test cricket. The Proteas all-rounder, who is leading South Africa for the first time in Test cricket, believes West Indies legend Brian Lara deserved to keep his record of 400 not out, which he scored against England. "First things first, I thought we'd got enough and we need to bowl. And secondly Brian Lara is a legend, let's be real. He got 400 against England and for someone of that stature to keep that record is pretty special," Mulder told South African broadcaster SuperSport. "If I get the chance again I'd probably do the same thing," he added. Mulder further mentioned that he also got support for his decision from coach Shukri Conrad. "I was speaking to our coach Shukri Conrad and he kind of said to me, 'Listen, let the legends keep the really big scores'. And you never know what my fate or whatever you want to call it, or what's destined for me, but I think Brian Lara keeping that record is exactly the way it should be," he said. Regardless of his decision, Mulder etched his name in the history books. His 367 not out is the fifth-highest individual score in Test cricket history. The right-handed batter stands only behind Brian Lara, Matthew Hayden and Mahela Jayawardena among the highest individual scorers in Men's Tests. Highest Individual Scores In Test Cricket 400* - Brian Lara for West Indies v England, Antigua 2004 380 - Matthew Hayden for Australia v Zimbabwe, Perth 2003 375 - Brian Lara for West Indies v England, Antigua 1994 374 - Mahela Jayawardene for Sri Lanka v South Africa, Colombo 2006 367* - Wiaan Mulder for South Africa v Zimbabwe, Bulawayo 2025 Earlier, the 37-year-old Mulder became the first batter to score a triple hundred on Test captaincy debut. He scored the second quickest triple hundred in the history of the format (297), behind only Virender Sehwag, who had got past the milestone off 278 deliveries against South Africa in Chennai back in 2008. South Africa is leading the series 1-0 after registering a massive 328-run victory in the first Test in Bulawayo.

India U-19 Lose Final ODI vs England U-19 But Clinch Series

The Indian U-19 team failed to finish on a high, going down by seven wickets to England U-19 in the inconsequential fifth Youth ODI on Monday. India had taken an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series after registering a 55-run victory in the fourth game on Saturday. Opting to bat, India produced a below-par batting effort to conjure just 210 for 9, which the the hosts chased down with consummate ease with 113 balls to spare. India endured a disastrous start, losing skipper Ayush Mhatre (1) and Vihaan Malhotra (1) inside three overs with the scoreboard reading 9. Teen sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi (33 off 42) could not produce his attacking prowess but stitched vital 51 runs with Rahul Kumar (21) to stabilise the innings. Just when the partnership was flourishing Suryavanshi departed, handing a catch to Alex Green off the bowling of Sebastian Morgan. He struck three fours and two sixes during his brief stay. Rahul Kumar too didn't last long, handing a catch to BJ Dawkins off the bowing of Green. Wickets continued to tumble for India as wicketkeeper Harvnash Pangalia (24), Kanishk Chauhan (24) and Deepesh Devendran (0) were dismissed in quick succession. RS Ambrish turned out to be the lone bright spot in India's batting department as he held one end up with a gritty 66 off 81 balls with the help of six boundaries. The English bowlers got the better of the Indian batting as they restricted the visitors to a below-par total. Chasing the paltry score, England rode on Ben Mayes' unbeaten 82, BJ Dawkins' 66 and skipper Thomas Rew's unbeaten 37-ball 49 to overhaul the target easily. Mayes struck 11 boundaries and one six during his 76-ball knock, while Dawkins hit nine fours and three hits over the fence in his 53-ball stay. Skipper Rew was not to be left behind as he too scored quickly, piling up his runs with the help of seven fours and one six. For India, leg-spinner Naman Pushpak picked up two wickets for 65 runs, while Deepesh Devendran scalped one giving away 34 of his seven overs. Brief Scores: India U-19: 210 for 9 in 50 overs (RS Ambrish 66; Ralphie Albert 2/24, Alex French 2/37).
