
Famous Newport pub reopens with bar and distillery
At the heart of the venue is a laid-back and characterful pub. The bar features locally brewed ales, wines, and signature cocktails, many of which are made with spirits distilled on-site in collaboration with the Spirit of Wales Distillery. The space has been carefully designed, combining traditional charm with steampunk-inspired touches, such as copper accents and vintage fittings.
'This is a space with history, heart and a real sense of place,' says Owner, Daniel Dyer.
'We've brought it back to life in a way that feels true to the building and exciting for what's next. Waterloo Inn is where people can meet, eat, drink, and enjoy something different.'
The restaurant offers seasonal menus built on Welsh produce and forest-foraged ingredients. Guests can expect a mix of comforting classics and elevated dishes with a twist, all served in a setting that is as cosy as it is creative. Whether enjoying a casual lunch, dinner with friends or a Sunday roast, the food is crafted to be shared, savoured, and remembered.
Waterloo Inn's micro-distillery, launching visitor experiences in September, will produce a range of small-batch spirits exclusive to the venue. Guests will soon be able to book guided tours and tasting sessions, learning how Welsh rums, gins and vodkas are made just metres from their table.
Visitors can now rediscover the Waterloo Inn at its restored site on St Mary's Road in Nash, Newport. The restaurant is open for evening service on weekdays and all day from Friday to Sunday, with distillery tours and tastings set to launch in September. Blue Peter's Peter Purves regrets working on show as it ruined dream career
Before joining the long-running kids' show Blue Peter, Peter Purves had been a Doctor Who companion for the first Time Lord, William Hartnell Veteran TV star Peter Purves claims his biggest regret is taking a job as a presenter on the children's show Blue Peter. His revelation will shock fans because for 11 years spanning the 1960s and 1970s he was one of telly's most famous faces, fronting the tea-time series along with John Noakes, Valerie Singleton and Lesley Judd. Many regard this period as 'a golden era' in the show's long-running history. Jobbing actor Purves joined Blue Peter in 1967 after he had been given the chop from Doctor Who, also a hit BBC show at the time. He had played TARDIS companion Steven Taylor for two years on the sci-fi series, alongside original Time Lord William Hartnell. Prior to that he had landed parts in Z Cars, The Saint, Dixon of Dock Green and The Villains. But when the jobbing actor found himself out of work for a year after Doctor Who, and was offered the post as a Blue Peter presenter, he took it. However, he now regrets that decision and wishes he hadn't gone down that path, because he had always wanted to become a successful actor and blames it for taking his career in a different direction. Purves, who is now 86, said: 'Deep down I wish I'd not done Blue Peter. I wish I had been more successful as an actor. But I could not get the work. 'So I took the presenting jobs that came my way. I know it might sound silly but I fancied myself as a leading man. I hoped I was going to be a film star. That was my ambition.' After he left Blue Peter in 1978, Peter went on to host TV shows such as Stopwatch and Kick Start and then Crufts. Although these jobs took him away from his acting dreams he tells Doctor Who Magazine about his lengthy TV career: 'I've been lucky. I've had a full life.' In 1962, Peter married actress and playwright Gilly Fraser with whom he has son Matthew and daughter Lisa. The couple divorced in 1982 and he now lives in Suffolk with his second wife Kathryn Evans. In 2008 his Blue Peter co-host Valerie revealed she'd enjoyed a "brief fling" with Peter when he was "between marriages'. After leaving Blue Peter, where he was in charge of the programme's dog, Petra, he went on to present Kick Start, Stopwatch, and the BBC 's Crufts dog show, with which he had an association for 40 years. He said their decision to axe him in 2020, because of his age, had felt like "a kick in the stomach'.

Forest Holidays is hoping to gain permission to replace 85 caravans and camping pitches at its site in Beddgelert, in Snowdonia National Park. In addition, Forest Holidays wants to create a new reception and cafe building. Currently, the site has 25 touring caravan pitches and 85 camping pitches. The proposals are part of a wider plan in collaboration with the Roberts Group - the owners of Cae Du and Cae Canol campsite, also in Beddgelert. Under a separate application, there will be more touring and camping pitches at Cae Du and Cae Canol so the village doesn't lose capacity. Public toilets and better path access for guests are also part of the plans. Back in 2017, the site gained planning consent for 16 cabins and up to 85 touring caravan pitches and camping pitches. Forest Holidays has 13 sites across the UK in woodlands owned by Forestry England, Forestry and Land Scotland, and Natural Resources Wales. The Beddgelert site is the smallest of the Forest Holidays locations and is set in a riverside wooded area. Each cabin currently has a hot tub and guests can enjoy access to the new Elvis Owl Nature Trail - which is ideal for kids as it includes activities to immerse them in nature. This holiday park has Maldives-like overwater bungalows Families can also hire bikes from the site, to explore the local area on wheels. Alternatively, guests can get some R&R with a spa treatment. Prices to stay at the holiday park vary, but can be found from £895 for a week, for a family of four. Beddgelert itself is a picturesque stone-built village, which is the ideal base for exploring Snowdonia National Park. From the village, travellers can head onto the Lôn Gwyrfai path which can be used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders. The route stretches over four miles to the village of Rhyd Ddu - which is then a good starting point to hike to the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). According to Forest Holidays, since opening in 2018 demand for the 16 cabins at Beddgelert has been high throughout the year. The site also expects annual occupancy levels of the cabins to be 96 per cent, with guests expected to spend £650,000 per annum in the local area as well. Forest Holidays, which submitted the plans for the project, hopes to build 75 timber holiday cabins on 140 acres in a Derbyshire woodland at Farley Moor. If approved, the holiday park would feature a shop, cafe, outdoor play area and 249 parking spaces. The whopping £23million project will be able to host 185 people with cabin sizes varying from one to five beds along with treehouse rooms. Forest Holidays plans to suspend all cabins above the ground on steel pillars to protect the forest floor. The cabins would be a flat-pack design reducing the need for heavy construction equipment. You can tell a lot about a country by its national parks. These preserved and protected spaces help teach visitors about the country's natural landscape, resources, wildlife, weather and local produce, all while offering visitors the chance to disconnect from screens and reconnect with the earth. P arque Nacional Ordesa y Monte Perdido in Spain. This Pyrenees park stretches its jagged mountain peaks, elevated cerulean lakes and mouth-dropping waterfalls across 156 kilometres along the northeastern border between Spain and France. If you're a nature junkie, Ordesa is your enabler, offering activities like hiking, whitewater rafting, camping, canyoning, rock climbing and then some. Experienced climbers flock to Monte Perdido, or 'the lost mountain', the Pyrenees' third-highest summit, for adrenaline-pumped climbing, while the Escupidera, Perdido's final section, is a cold, icy challenge even in summer. Less experienced nature dwellers will still be in awe down on the Ordesa Valley Floor, where a 16k route winds through fields of flowery meadows, silver-fir forests and waterfalls-a-plenty. Maybe you'll stumble upon some of the wildlife or herds of curious cows grazing, accompanied by their shepherd, steering them away from dangerous edges. Taking second place is Slovenia's Triglav National Park, where the highest peak of the Julian Alps, Mount Trivalgo, stands at just under 2900 metres. Take the challenge of this intermediate trek, or, if you're looking for a journey on wheels, cycle on the Radovna Cycle Route in the Radovna Valley on the park's western border, suited for all levels. Wales' Snowdonia National Park (or Eryri) comes third, with 823 square miles of stunning Welsh wilderness. Climb the mighty Mount Snowdon, walk through its lakeside trails or simply camp out among Wales' countryside, taking in the fresh air and lush green hills.
