Small impact to Hong Kong expected from tsunami caused by earthquake near Russia

A tsunami triggered by a powerful magnitude 8.8 earthquake off Russia's far eastern Kamchatka peninsula could reach Hong Kong on Thursday afternoon, although the impact will be small, the Observatory has said.
The shallow earthquake damaged buildings and injured several people in the remote Russian region and triggered four-metre-high (13-foot) tsunami waves, while much of
Japan 's eastern seaboard was ordered to evacuate.
'If the tsunami persists, it is expected to reach Hong Kong around 5pm [on Thursday] and recur at intervals of five to 60 minutes,' the city's weather forecaster said.
'It is expected to exceed the normal tide level by around 0.1 metre (4 inches) or less. The impacts to Hong Kong will be small.'
Earlier in the day, HK Express diverted a Sendai-bound flight to Tokyo following the closure of Sendai Airport due to a tsunami warning.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning across a wide area of the Pacific coast on Wednesday morning and Sendai Airport in the Tohoku region subsequently closed its runway.

'Under the influence of an active southwest monsoon, heavy showers and thunderstorms continue to develop in the vicinity of the Pearl River Delta,' the Observatory said. 'They may affect Hong Kong shortly. Members of the public should be on the alert.' The forecaster added that a thunderstorm warning that had been issued shortly before 7pm on Saturday would remain in effect on Sunday until at least 12.30pm. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department said that red flags had been hoisted at several beaches in Hong Kong, including Deep Water Bay Beach on Hong Kong Island and Hap Mun Bay Beach in Sai Kung district.

It said whether the black rainstorm warning signal needs to be issued depends on the development of the band of thundery showers. Rain is particularly heavy in the Eastern district of Hong Kong Island and Sai Kung with more then 70 millimetres of hourly rainfall. The government asked members of the public to report any street flooding to the Drainage Services Department and schools that are in session will continue until the end of school hours. Police have so far received one report of flooding on Tseung Kwan O Tunnel Road. The Observatory had earlier issued the amber rainstorm warning at 6.50 am. The latest warnings come five days after Hong Kong saw its first black rainstorm warning of the year.
