Markfed starts procuring burley tobacco in Andhra Pradesh
The initiative comes in view of the destress in which the growers have landed this year due to increase in production and drastic fall in market prices.
The State government has estimated that there is about 90 million kg of burley tobacco across the State, out of which a majority of the produce is from the Parchur Assembly constituency in Bapatla district.
Parchur MLA Yeluri Sambasiva Rao has raised the issue of the burley tobacco growers and brought pressure on the government to purchase the produce to save the lives of the farmers.
Manazir Jeelani Samoon, Managing Director of the Andhra Pradesh Markfed told The Hindu that they started procuring the burley tobacco at seven auction platforms in four districts — Bapatla, Palnadu, Prakasam and Guntur, with an initial target of 20 million kg.
Private tobacco companies also started purchasing the produce from the farmers simultaneously.
Curbs on cultivation
Mr. Jeelani Samoon said, 'While instructing the Markfed to purchase the burley tobacco from the farmers, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has instructed the Agriculture Department and district Collectors not to allow the farmers to cultivate the crop from this agriculture year. There will be a strict prevention of burley tobacco cultivation in the State.'
He added that the Tobacco Board did not involve in addressing the problem of the burley tobacco farmers, as it was mandated to look after only the Flue-Cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco.
Mr. Sambasiva Rao said that farmers cultivated the burley tobacco in high quantity this year as the produce was purchased at very high price the previous year. 'But this year, the companies have refused to purchase the entire produce stating that there is no market for it,' he added.

Rajasthan BJP leader expelled after criticising ‘treatment' of Jagdeep Dhankar, Satyapal Malik
The Rajasthan unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party has expelled its spokesperson Krishan Kumar Janu for six years after he purportedly criticised the party's treatment of former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik and ex-Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, The Hindu reported on Sunday. The expulsion came after a video where Janu is reportedly heard criticising BJP leaders over what he described as the 'humiliating treatment' meted out to Malik and Dhankhar was widely circulated on social media. Janu claimed that he was deeply hurt after witnessing the 'disdain' shown towards Malik and Dhankhar, both of whom belong to the Jat community, the newspaper reported. The former spokesperson also belongs to the same community. However, in a communiqué on Friday, the BJP cited Janu's comments made in June opposing the appointment of Harshini Kulhari as its Jhunjhunu district president as the reason for his expulsion. BJP leader Onkar Singh Lakhawat claimed that the former spokesperson failed to justify his actions in response to a show cause notice issued to him on June 20, and that this proved 'a breach of discipline', The Hindu reported. Contentious remarks Referring to Malik's death on August 5, Janu claimed that the former Jammu and Kashmir governor's last rites were not conducted with state honours. He also said that Dhankhar was not given a farewell after he had resigned as vice president on July 21. Malik died on August 5 after a prolonged illness at the age of 79. The former governor had attracted controversy after claiming that he was offered a bribe to clear files related to two major projects in Jammu and Kashmir. He had also questioned the Union government over issues related to farmers and the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, among others. Dhankar, on the other hand, had submitted his resignation as vice president on July 21 after citing health reasons. The Opposition had claimed that his resignation was 'totally unexpected' and that there seemed to be more to it than what met the eye. Following his expulsion, Janu told The Indian Express that he had a habit of speaking freely and felt that the party was in the wrong, be it the Dhankhar case or with Malik. 'So, I spoke and wrote against this politics of prejudice and vendetta,' the newspaper quoted him as saying. 'If Jats in the BJP can't speak, then what is the point of them staying in the party? What good can they do for the community if they can't speak out?' He added: 'I had asked questions of Jat leaders in the BJP, be it the MPs or MLAs and not the BJP. But my expulsion means that the party needs deaf and dumb people, not the ones who speak up.'

Political parties say they have filed many claims and objections after Bihar draft roll, though ECI lists zero complaints
Even as the Election Commission maintains that no claims and objections have been filed by political parties over names wrongfully included or excluded in the draft electoral list in Bihar, political workers — including Booth Level Agents (BLA) on the ground — claim that they have filed many such complaints. In fact, party workers say that when they flag the deletion of names of eligible voters through these complaints, Electoral Registration Officers (ERO) tell them to ask voters to instead file Form 6, which is meant for first-time voter registrations. According to data furnished by the Election Commission of India on Saturday (August 9, 2025), zero claims have been filed by over 1.6 lakh Booth Level Agents (BLA) appointed by political parties, while 7,252 claims have been filed by individual voters. However, the Form 6 applications are pouring in, with 43,123 having been filed so far. The ECI, however, has not registered these as complaints. 'I have filed a complaint regarding the deletion of 20 names in Bahadurpur Assembly Segment in Darbhanga with the BLO, who is supposed to forward it to the District Magistrate,' Amit Kumar Paswan, a BLA of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), told The Hindu. Mr. Paswan said the BLO had counter-signed his complaint as a receipt in duplicate, and his party later forwarded it to the District Magistrate as well. A copy seen by The Hindu shows that the complaint was written on plain paper and not in any specified format or form or with the party letterhead. Similarly, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Mukund Singh, who is leading a team filing claims and objections after the SIR, said that her party has filed many complaints. She was clueless about why they were not being registered in the ECI data though they have been counter-signed as receipts by the officials responsible. It was not clear whether there is a specific format or form which the BLA is expected to use to raise claims and objections, though the Handbook on Electoral Registration does give BLAs a specific format to seek the addition and deletion of names. A senior ECI official in Delhi, who did not wish to be named, said no claims and objections can be accepted if they are not in proper format. 'ECI is running away from its responsibility. It is saying no party has filed complaints, but the fact is that many complaints have been filed,' he added. In a statement on Saturday (August 9, 2025), the CPI (ML) also said that despite filing complaints with district and State officials, the 'complaints' column in the ECI's daily bulletins fail to record these numbers. It added that people whose names have been deleted in the draft roll are being forced by ECI officials to get their names restored by filling Form 6, which is meant for new voters. 'CPI (ML) has been repeatedly raising this issue of how Form 6 is being forced on people whose votes have been deleted, leaving no mechanism to file complaints and thereby allowing the ECI to issue daily press releases showing zero complaints filed,' it said.

MakeMyTrip launches AI-enabled travel agent Myra
Online travel booking platform MakeMyTrip has introduced an AI-powered virtual travel agent that can guide users through every step of their journey on the website, from trip planning and booking to handling post-sales queries such as cancellations and refunds, via both voice and text. Users can ask complex and open-ended queries in the realm of travel in Hindi or English like 'Where can I go in August for a relaxing holiday with my kids?,' or 'I want to go to south India to cover Madurai, Rameswaram, Kovalam, Kodaikanal. Can you suggest me the best route? But I don't want to travel via flight'. The virtual assistant Myra is built on a network of specialised AI agents across all major travel categories, flights, accommodation, holidays, ground transport, visas, and forex. It supports multimodal input (text, voice, image, video), continuous back-and-forth dialogue, itinerary edits, and post-sales support — all within the same interface. Myra will gives user personalised answers based on up-to-date availability, prices, and relevance. MakeMyTrip claims that while most AI travel tools only offer suggestions to users, this tool goes a step further by helping users move from travel ideas to actually helping travellers book their travel and complete payment online – something that hasn't been tried before. It will offer assistance not just with flights and hotels but also holiday planning, ground transport such as cabs and buses, visas and forex. CEO Rajesh Magow said such digital innovations helped 'reach the deepest corners, and bringing seamless, intelligent travel booking to those who have long been underserved by digital platforms.' 'MakeMyTrip has seen travel demand penetration grow deeper over the years, from metro to top 15 cities many years ago to now as many as 2,000 unique cities,' he told The Hindu. The portal commands more than 50% market share among all online travel booking portals. Myra may be able to facilitate bookings for an individual but it lacks the complexities of negotiating, handling customer bargains, accounting for individual preferences for a group bookings like a human travel agent, or helping during a travel emergency. 'Even if AI is able to do 50% of a human tour manager's work, there will still be room for workforce in other tasks and AI related human intervention,' he added. The tool is currently available in Hindi and English and will be expanded to include other regional languages too. It is currently available in beta version which will be released to a limited group of real users for testing before the official launch. Group Chief Technology Officer Sanjay Mohan called the product 'the most ambitious build' undertaken by the company. In the next stage, MakeMyTrip will add smarter search tools that can understand the meaning behind what you're looking for, even from images and videos. This means one won't have to rely only on fixed filters and can search in a more intuitive manner. The system will be able to pick up on subtle travel needs, making it easier and more personal to find what you want.
