Selangor Govt Proposes Seizure Of Assets, Withhold Income Of Court-ordered "Nafkah" Payment Defaulters
State Islamic Religious Affairs and Cultural Innovation Committee chairman Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah said other proposed measures include income withholding orders, garnishment orders, and the sale of property belonging to defaulters.
"The selection of an appropriate and efficient mechanism by the party seeking maintenance, especially the ex-wife or children's guardian, is a crucial factor in ensuring the successful enforcement of maintenance orders.
'Failure to choose the right channel or mechanism can cause delays, confusion, and ultimately jeopardise the rights of the maintenance recipient,' he told the State Assembly today.
He was responding to an oral question from Mariam Abdul Rashid (PH-Meru) on efforts by the state government to strengthen state laws and enable stricter action against those who evade maintenance payments.
Mohammad Fahmi said the state government, through the Syariah Judicial Department (JAKESS), is also exploring strategic collaboration opportunities with other agencies such as the National Registration Department, the Inland Revenue Board, and financial institutions to assist in the process of tracing and seizing the assets of individuals who have defaulted on maintenance orders.
"The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS), together with JAKESS, the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS), academics, and Syariah legal experts, are currently reviewing and proposing amendments to the Islamic Family Law Enactment (Selangor State) 2003 to improve provisions related to the enforcement of maintenance orders,' he said.
He also told the State Assembly that 1,189 complaints of maintenance violations had been received by the Selangor State Family Support Division since 2022 until May 31 this year.

In a written parliamentary reply, education minister Fadhlina Sidek said the funds were disbursed to state education departments and educational institutions in February based on student enrolment numbers. A total of 91 suppliers were involved in supplying the badges, with each student receiving two Jalur Gemilang badges free of charge. Fadhlina said the procurement process was managed by the state education departments, district education offices, and institutions through the ePerolehan system, either by tender or quotation, depending on the amount of allocation received. She said the state education departments were also granted the flexibility to procure the badges by zones to expedite the supply process and to encourage participation from a larger pool of qualified suppliers. Fadhlina said parents are allowed to provide additional badges of the same size and suitable material if desired. She was responding to a question by Latiff Rahman (PN-Kuala Krai) about the total cost incurred by the government in supplying Jalur Gemilang badges to all students under the ministry's institutions and which company supplied them. Public school students started wearing the Jalur Gemilang badge on their school uniforms in March. However, the education ministry said no disciplinary action will be taken against those who fail to do so.

Air India to Suspend Flights to Washington DC from Sept 1
NEW DELHI, Aug 11 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- India's flag carrier Air India said on Monday that it will suspend flights between Delhi and Washington, DC, from September 1 due to the modernisation of its Boeing 787-8 fleet, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti. "Air India today announced the suspension of its services between Delhi and Washington, DC, effective Sept 1, 2025, due to a combination of operational factors, to ensure the reliability and integrity of Air India's overall route network. The suspension is primarily driven by the planned shortfall in Air India's fleet, as the airline commenced retrofitting 26 of its Boeing 787-8 aircraft last month," the statement read. The modernisation programme will make multiple Boeing aircraft unavailable until at least the end of 2026, the company added. Additionally, the ongoing closure of airspace over Pakistan has complicated long-haul operations, necessitating longer flight routes and adding operational challenges.

DPP reviewing upside-down flag investigation paper, Putrajaya to issue further instructions
KEPALA BATAS: The Penang Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) is reviewing the investigation paper over the incident where the Jalur Gemilang was displayed upside down in front of a shop here. Seberang Perai Utara district police chief ACP Anuar Abd Rahman said the investigation paper was sent to the DPP's office at 2.30pm on Monday (Aug 11) after the police completed their investigation. "The investigation paper has been referred to the DPP and was informed the investigation paper will be referred to Putrajaya for further instructions," he said in a statement on Monday (Aug 11). The 59-year-old shop owner was released on bail on Monday after the police finished recording his statement. Police opened an investigation under Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. – Bernama
