Man Jailed During Emergency Refuses Honour, Gives Minister Memo For Justice
Bhopal: An uneasy silence fell over the Independence Day celebrations in Madhya Pradesh's Damoh on Friday after an 84-year-old man who was imprisoned during the Emergency refused an honour and handed an application to the minister instead. As the crowd waited for the traditional felicitation of people who were imprisoned under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA), one of the honourees, Santosh Bharti, stood firm. When Higher Education Minister and district in-charge Inder Singh Parmar stepped forward with Collector Sudhir Kochar to honour him, the 84-year-old refused. Instead, he raised his finger, handed over a memorandum, and walked away from the ceremony. Behind the act lay a decades-long grievance: Being denied justice after he was declared a tenant in a house he had bought from the housing board. Speaking later to NDTV, Mr Bharti said, "I am not hungry for respect. For 58 years, we have struggled not for garlands and shawls, but for justice. Whether it was the Congress in power or the BJP, we have remained 'satyagrahis' in the fight for truth. Honour means nothing if the very system denies us our rights." The octogenarian said he had bought a low-income group house in 1984 and, because he refused to pay a bribe to officials, he was arbitrarily declared a tenant. A demand of Rs 2 lakh followed, then a recovery notice, and even police harassment, he alleged. Mr Bharti approached a trial court and won not just there but in the High Court as well. The registry of his house, however, still remains incomplete. "I am old now," he said, his voice breaking. "What will I leave behind for my children? I have begged, folded my hands, even appealed to property officers. Nothing has changed. The order exists, but justice does not." "I never went to receive honours in my life. My purpose today was not to stand on stage, but to hand over a memorandum and ask for justice. I am the only person in this country who has been jailed three times under MISA, yet I remain ignored," he added. When asked about Mr Bharti's refusal to accept the honour, Minister Inder Singh Parmar said only, "I don't know, I don't have any information about this." What Memorandum Said In his memorandum, Mr Bharti reiterated his demand for justice. "Today, on 15th August, I am separating myself from this token honour. I don't want it. I am the only man in India who went to jail thrice under MISA... I don't need this honour. I need true justice," he wrote. The MISA, which was enacted in 1971, gave enforcement agencies broad powers to detain people and search properties without warrants. It was used extensively during the Emergency between 1975 and 1977 and was repealed in 1988 Mr Bharti said that, in 1973, he was jailed alongside Sharad Yadav, who would go on to serve as the president of the Janata Dal (United) for inciting a police revolt. In 1974, he was imprisoned for supporting the railway strike. In 1975, he was sent to jail during the Emergency for his participation, with future Defence Minister George Fernandes, in the Jan Jagran Abhiyan.

After Ruckus At 'Bengal Files' Trailer Launch, Cops Say Vivek Agnihotri Didn't Take Permission
Kolkata: Kolkata Police sources have told NDTV that filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri had not sought any administrative permission for public view of the trailer of The Bengal Files in Kolkata. The attempt to screen the trailer without permission violated Section 3 of the West Bengal Cinemas (Regulation) Act, 1954 which governs the exhibition of cinema in the state, a senior police officer in Kolkata told NDTV. "If he has taken required permission, he should at least show the media the documents," the officer said. The response came after the Bollywood filmmaker claimed his trailer launch of 'The Bengal Files' at a five-star hotel in Kolkata was stopped on Saturday. Visuals of policemen entering the venue had gone viral on social media. On Friday, Mr Agnihotri was seen at Kalighat Temple offering prayers alongside Tushar Kanti Ghosh, the BJP's media incharge in Bengal. "It has happened in front of you, camera captured, the trailer launch of a CBFC-approved movie was stopped, this is an anarchy, dictatorship... Police had come so that we could not show the movie, the police are being used in Bengal because of some people's political ambitions," Mr Agnihotri told reporters. "The film talks about demography change, and they don't want to show it because the state itself empowers demography change. I cannot be silenced," he said. The ruling Trinamool Congress's spokesperson said Mr Agnihotri's allegation is baseless. "What the videomaker has said is totally baseless. If he has guts, first make 'Gujarat Files' on the Godhra riots, then go to Manipur, make 'Manipur Files'. Go to UP - Unnao, Hathras, Prayagraj, and make 'UP Files'. He is planted by a political force," Trinamool leader Kunal Ghosh said. "He made 'Kashmir Files' and now he is blaming West Bengal, distorting facts, and maligning West Bengal. He is doing his job assigned by the BJP," Mr Ghosh added. An ITC Royal Bengal spokesperson said it extended full cooperation and all relevant information has been shared with the authorities who are investigating the matter. 'The Bengal Files' says it depicts the 1946 Great Calcutta Killings - also known as Direct Action Day - and how communal violence in the state shaped India's path to Partition and Independence. The film stars Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, Mithun Chakraborty, and Saswata Chatterjee, among others. The film is set to release on September 5 and is part of Mr Agnihotri's Files trilogy.

‘Not a single rupee released…': Cong MLA flags Telangana govt's inaction over ‘uncleared bills'
A Congress MLA in Telangana on Friday took a swipe at his own government's alleged inaction in clearing pending bills for development works. Congress MLA Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy(Facebook/Komatireddy Reddy) According to an NDTV report, MLA Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy, without naming Revanth Reddy, said these clearances require the chief minister's approval. The NDTV report further said that Congress's state disciplinary action committee has taken note of RKomatireddy Rajgopal Reddy's comments and its chairman, Mallu Ravi, is likely to meet him. Revanth Reddy's swipe Earlier this week, Telangana chief minister Revanth Reddy had taken an indirect swipe at Rajagopal Reddy, according to NDTV. "In politics, out of ten people who want to sit on the same chair, nine will be disappointed. Whether they are from a family, caste, region, or you will show disappointment... It could cause harm to you, us, the state and nation," the chief minister had said.
