Meet Desislava Bozhilova: World Snooker Championship final referee who was told 'just chill' by Ronnie O'Sullivan

Daily Record04-05-2025

Bulgarian Bozhilova will become the first woman to take charge of all three Triple Crown finals
All eyes will be on the two players, but the World Snooker Championship final will also be the biggest day of Desislava Bozhilova's career.
The Bulgarian referee will take charge of the final of snooker's biggest event, and is renowned as one of the most respected officials in the game.

However her backstory includes a memorable disagreement with Ronnie O'Sullivan - and even telling some excitable commentators to tone it down during a match.

The 32-year-old will become the first woman to have taken charge of the final of all three Triple Crown events, having previously officiated the final of the Masters and the UK Championship in 2022."
She will become just the second woman to take charge of the world final, after Michaela Tabb who donned the white gloves in 2009 and 2012.
Bozhilova first worked on the Tour at a PTC event in Sofia in 2012, and quickly advanced through the ranks to become one of the sport's best respected referees.
She took charge of a Crucible semi-final for the first time in 2022 when Judd Trump edged out Mark Williams 17-16, and will now make the step up to snooker's biggest match.
Speaking about joining the elite list of World Championship final referees, Bozhilova said: "I am really excited, it was an amazing feeling when I was given the news
"It is what I have worked towards for many years, it has been my dream. It will be different to any other final because of the atmosphere at the Crucible.

"Since I started working in snooker I have learned everything from the more experienced referees. They give advice and tell us how to improve. There is a lot of team work and we support each other."
It hasn't all been plain-sailing however, and no-nonsense Desislava doesn't care if you're a competitor or a commentator when it comes to laying down the law.

Back in 2022, she told off BBC commentators for being too loud during a semi-final clash between Judd Trump and Mark Williams.
On rival broadcaster Eurosport, the commentators said: "Just a bit of noise coming from the host broadcaster's studio. Desislava banged on the window and told them to keep quiet. That's the way to do it."
And last year Ronnie O'Sullivan told Bozhilova to 'chill' during the final session of his quarter-final against Stuart Bingham after he refused to come to the table while fans watching the match on the other side of the arena trickled in.
She gestured to O'Sullivan to come back to the table, but the seven-time world champion remained unconvinced.
'But we might wait 20 minutes,' Bozhilova said. 'It's not 20 minutes. Just chill, chill,' O'Sullivan replied. 'I'm chilled,' added the irate ref.
The Rocket had also turned down a red in the 12th frame after being left displeased with how the black had been re-spotted earlier in the match.

'Talk of sacking Wilder a bit strange'

Andy Giddings, BBC Radio Sheffield reporter A meeting is scheduled to take place in which the owners of the football club will discuss whether they want Chris Wilder to continue as the team's the noises from the other side suggest Wilder is raring to go and crack on to try and get Sheffield United promoted next does seem strange such a short time after the play-off final, and given Wilder's successes - he was a kick of a ball away from becoming, via some metrics, Sheffield United's most successful manager - that this is even a discussion.I can understand where some fans have reservations about AI [being used for recruitment processes]. You can cite certain teams but it's never going to be the same as at Brighton and Brentford of how they use their recruitment outside the inner workings of those clubs is ever going to know what goes is no silver bullet to recruitment and in any recruitment process, I'm sure a lot of fans will agree that there has to come a point where you use the technology. Great, that's there has to be the human element of it because there isn't a statistic in the world that can tell you about heart, fight and character. Can you do it when the chips are down? Rob Staton, BBC Radio Sheffield reporter Here's what I don't understand - why offer Chris Wilder a new contract in January? It seems a little bit strange that you would give Wilder a new contract and then a few months later move haven't had a chance to speak to the new owners. You would imagine that perhaps if they were to make a move like this, they would answer some questions as to why, and their vision, and what exactly they are thinking you do have to wonder, sometimes with owners they have some ideals, ways they want to work around things. Have Sheffield United not been this way before?Because in the past they went to Slavisa Jokanovic, they wanted to do things differently. They then had to rip that up a few months later and go back to the system that had worked in the Sheffield United didn't win promotion last season but they did have, by and large, a successful season after a difficult rebuild last summer. Could history repeat itself here?

Chris Wilder 'set to be sacked' by Sheffield United ahead of crunch meeting

Sheffield United missed out on promotion to the Premier League after losing the Championship play-off final and could now be about to make a shock managerial change Chris Wilder is said to be on the verge of being sacked by Sheffield United just weeks after missing out on promotion to the Premier League in the Championship play-off final. Wilder, 57, was unable to guide his boyhood club back to the Premier League at the first time of asking following relegation from the top-flight in the 2023-24 campaign. After missing out on automatic promotion, the Blades were stunned by Sunderland at Wembley to leave Wilder and Co facing up to another Championship campaign. ‌ However, it has now emerged that Wilder's future is in doubt ahead of a pivotal meeting at Bramall Lane. ‌ Various reports have confirmed that Sheffield United's powerbrokers will meet to discuss Wilder's future at a recruitment meeting on Thursday. It's said that Wilder could even be sacked on the same day, despite signing a new contract with the Blades last season. The club's new American-based owners, COH Sports, are 'keen' to make a fresh appointment ahead of the 2025-26 campaign, according to The Telegraph, who expect Wilder to be shown the door. Sheffield United's new owners have wasted little time in stamping their authority on the club, implementing a new AI tool to aid their recruitment strategy. Just this week the club announced the signing of Ehije Ukaki from Botev Plovdiv. Wilder confirmed that the 20-year-old winger was signed from the Bulgarian outfit after being identified by the club's 'data driven strategy'. ‌ Join the debate! Do you think Sheffield United should sack Wilder? Let us know here He told the club's official website: "Ehije is a player who has been identified through our data driven strategy and is someone we're looking forward to developing. "He's an emerging talent, still only 20, who has enjoyed some experience of European football early in his career, so there's a base to work from." Wilder re-joined Sheffield United for a second spell in December 2023 but was unable to keep them in the Premier League. He had them in the upper echelons of the Championship for the majority of last season, though, only for the Blades to finish 3rd on 90 points behind Leeds United and Burnley.
