The gripping, emotive tale of Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira's disappearance: best podcasts of the week

The Guardian4 hours ago

This six-episode Guardian podcast opens with evocative descriptions of dense Amazonian jungle teeming with macaws, jaguars and howler monkeys. But the pastoral beauty soon gives way to fear, as we hear about the disappearance of environmental journalist Dom Phillips and Brazilian Indigenous defender Bruno Pereira in a tale that pits them against the forces that run one of the world's biggest drug-smuggling routes. This gripping investigation tries to get to the bottom of what happened and, given that it's hosted by Phillips's friend, the Guardian's Latin America correspondent Tom Phillips, does so in a movingly personal manner. Will AI steal all our jobs? Could Terminator-style robots overthrow humanity? These questions don't just feel loaded but arguably a little hoary by now. It's a good job, then, that it is Richard Ayoade and Warwick Davis picking over them with effortlessly amusing and often (in Ayoade's case) deeply dry observations. Helen Keen adds some science writer cred, as they gaze into the future of food, relationships, holidays and more. Hannah J DaviesAudible, all episodes available now
Rebecca Root and Seán Carlsen star in a found-footage indie drama from Fio Trethewey and Georgia Cook, who have previously written Doctor Who audio adventures. This updated take on Dracula with a queer twist is brilliantly inventive while also keeping Bram Stoker's cast of characters front of mind. 'A journalist, a cabinet minister and a spy walk into a bar' – is this a bad joke, asks ex-CIA officer Marc Polymeropoulos? Influencer who spent £1MILLION on plastic surgery claims she's now been kicked off dating apps for being 'too beautiful'

An influencer who claims she was blocked on dating apps for being 'too beautiful' has revealed she's been forced to look for love in the offline world. Janaina Prazeres, 35, says her appearance was considered 'too good to be true' by the algorithms and users of the apps, who reported her profile. The Brazilian model previously revealed she spent almost £1million on plastic surgery in a bid to become the world's 'most perfect woman'. In an interview with Glamour Bulgaria, she said she created three different accounts, but was blocked each time, claiming that being 'too pretty' is 'exhausting'. 'At first, I thought it was a bug,' she told the outlet. 'But after creating three different accounts and being kicked off all of them, I realised something else was happening. 'They just said my account appeared inauthentic. I tried to appeal, but never got a response.' The dating platform - which she did not specify - cited guideline violations but never specified the reason. As a result, she decided to ditch the apps and return to traditional flirting. 'I went back to doing what our parents did. Casual conversations, eye contact...' she shared. Janaina, who has nearly 900,000 followers on Instagram, has been under the knife 20 times - spending a staggering £758,000 to enhance her appearance. Among the many procedures she's undergone over the years, Prazares has had a full facial 'harmonisation' and fillers, multiple rhinoplasties, a Brazilian Butt Lift, and a body lift costing around £66,000. However, her old, faded passport photo exhibits the model in a more natural state, with a distinctly darker hair colour, a slightly wider nose, a less 'chiselled' face shape and lighter make-up. During a recent international flight she was temporarily held at immigration upon arriving at Brazil after agents questioned the validity of her passport. She alleged officers detained her for 40 minutes while questioning her identity at Sao Paolo International Airport, where she had planned to board a flight to the U.S. She said: 'I always thought this might happen at some point, because my appearance has changed significantly over the years. 'But still, it was a shock - you never expect to be stopped at the airport when you've done nothing wrong. 'Officers asked several questions and even compared my photo with other images before granting me entry into the country.' Admitting it was 'embarrassing', she renewed her passport with an updated photo when she was eventually let through the gates. Prazeres said: 'I didn't want to go through that kind of embarrassment again. 'As soon as I arrived at my destination, I started looking into what I needed to get a new document with a more recent photo.' The model warned: 'Perfection has its price.' Prazeres was voted the 'Perfect Woman' by Playboy in Norway in 2023, after spending $300,000 at the time on plastic surgery. After receiving the accolade from the famous adult magazine, she spoke out about how she's gone under the knife several times. The Brazilian native believes being beautiful is 'the secret to a better life,' adding: 'I love feeling more beautiful - I always try to make my self-esteem high.' The model reiterates that it is necessary to always choose a path with beneficial results for the body and the soul Janaina's makeover: Some of the cosmetic procedures Playboy's 'Perfect Woman' has undergone Liposuction High-definition liposuction Two nose jobs Boob jobs Buttock bioplasty (also known as a Brazilian butt lift or BBL) Facial bioplasty (also known as filler) Rib bone removed 'This is the secret to a better life. So if I can invest in [my beauty] I don't save.' Janaina has also undergone non-invasive procedures. 'We have to take advantage of what medicine offers,' the model said. 'Choosing to have surgery is a strategy as I am unable to dedicate myself to dieting. 'I tried different diets and realized that some help immediately, but for me it is not advantageous. 'They are very regimented and become difficult to fit into the routine. 'I think the scalpel solves everything easier - the diet requires us to adapt to a new lifestyle and I'm not willing to do that.' The model reiterates that it is necessary to always choose a path with beneficial results for the body and the soul. Janaina revealed previously that she has weekly appointments with a psychologist. 'I think it's essential to go to therapy. It's an incredible and effective methodology,' she shared. 'The most important thing is to have care and love for ourselves and not be so critical. 'Looking at the good side of life is always persisting in our dreams.' Janaina also takes part in bodybuilding, cardio training and electrical stimulation, and has a personal trainer to help her gain muscle. 'I eat balanced meals, with proteins, vegetables and carbohydrates,' she said. 'I avoid soft drinks and sugar but I can't do without fast food. I like doing my surgeries but I don't abandon my body.' Elsewhere during her Glamour interview, Janaina revealed she started modelling at 18, but the Playboy Norway campaign was when her career really got a 'big boost'. As for the future, she said she's excited to venture into the 'business world' and see where her new path will take her.

Can you solve it? The deductive decade – ten years of Monday puzzles

Forgive me the indulgence of celebrating ten years of this column. Toot toot! I began posting biweekly brainteasers at the end of May 2015, originally addressing you folk as 'guzzlers' – Guardian puzzlers. The cringy coinage didn't stick, but the column did, and here we are a decade and 260 columns later. Some data. Total page views are now 38 million, which averages out at about 150,000 views per puzzle – a whopping number, I'd say. Thanks to everyone for the encouragement and support. For today's offerings I decided to go back through the archive and repost ten of my favourites. Some may be familiar, others not. Please graze, maybe even guzzle – and here's to the next ten years! 1. Bat and ball Three friends (A, B and C) are playing ping pong. They play the usual way: the winner stays on, and the loser waits their turn again. At the end of the day, they summarise the number of games that each of them played: A played 10 B played 15 C played 17. Who lost the second game? 2. Tricky trams Why are the tram's overhead cables positioned to make a zigzag, rather than straight line? 3. Read the question 3. What is never odd or even? 4. Catch the cat A straight corridor has 7 doors along one side. Behind one of the doors sits a cat. Your mission is to find the cat by opening the correct door. Each day you can open only one door. If the cat is there, you win. If the cat is not there, the door closes, and you must wait until the next day before you can open a door again. If the cat was always to sit behind the same door, you would be able to find it in at most seven days, by opening each door in turn. But this mischievous moggy is restless. Every night it moves randomly either one door to the left or one to the right. Although if it is behind the first or last door, it has only one option for where it can move. How many days do you now need to make sure you can catch the cat? 5. Mystery number I have a ten digit number, abcdefghij. Each of the digits is different, and a is divisible by 1 ab is divisible by 2 abc is divisible by 3 abcd is divisible by 4 abcde is divisible by 5 abcdef is divisible by 6 abcdefg is divisible by 7 abcdefgh is divisible by 8 abcdefghi is divisible by 9 abcdefghij is divisible by 10 What's my number? [To clarify: a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, and j are all single digits. Each digit from 0 to 9 is represented by exactly one letter. The number abcdefghij is a ten-digit number whose first digit is a, second digit is b, and so on. It does not mean that you multiply a x b x c x…] 6. Disappearing cub This picture has not been doctored. Explain why the reflection has a yellow lion cub. 7. Crazy triangle Show that there is a triangle, the sum of whose three heights is less than 1mm, that has an area greater than the surface of the Earth (510m km2). 8. Deck dilemma Your friend chooses at random a card from a standard deck of 52 cards, and keeps this card concealed. You have to guess which of the 52 cards it is. Before your guess, you can ask your friend one of the following three questions: is the card red? is the card a face card? (Jack, Queen or King) is the card the ace of spades? Your friend will answer truthfully. What question would you ask that gives you the best chance of guessing the correct card? 9. The question with no question (a) All of the following. (b) None of the following. (c) Some of the following. (d) All of the above. (e) None of the above. [Just to reassure you, nothing has been omitted here.] 10. Triangle fold Find a way to fold a square piece of paper into an equilateral triangle. The triangle can be of any size. I'll be back at 5pm UK with the solutions. PLEASE NO SPOILERS Instead please recommend your favourites from the 260 you have read here over the years. Sources: 1. Adrian Paenza, 2. Kvantik magaizine, 3. Des MacHale, 4. New York Times. 5. John Conway, 6. Matt Pritchard, 7. Trần Phương, 8. Henk Tijms, 9. Parabola, 10. The Paper Puzzle Book. I've been setting a puzzle here on alternate Mondays since 2015. I'm always on the look-out for great puzzles. If you would like to suggest one, email me.
