America is moving backward on climate. Here's how Hollywood can help

An unprecedented heat wave is baking Seattle, and Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital is overwhelmed.
Doctors scramble to treat people with heat stroke and pregnant women going into early labor due to triple-digit temperatures. The emergency room runs out of ice. Elective surgeries are canceled. Grey Sloan is so inundated — partly due to power outages at another hospital — that it's forced to turn away patients.
In one scene — because this is all happening on the latest season of 'Grey's Anatomy' — several doctors operate on a young man who tried to rob a convenience store, only to wind up shot with his own gun during a scuffle.
'We should invite the lawmakers voting against background checks to assist,' says Teddy Altman (Kim Raver), the hospital's chief of surgery.
'Well, violent crime rises along with the temperature,' responds intern Jules Millin (Adelaide Kane).
Fact check: Accurate. There's real research linking gun violence to above-average temperatures.
There was also a real heat dome that inspired the writers of 'Grey's Anatomy.' Portland hit a record 116 degrees in 2021; between the U.S. and Canada, 1,400 people died. Global warming made it worse, researchers found.
If President Trump and other politicians keep doing the oil and gas industry's bidding, the climate crisis will only get deadlier. But Hollywood can play a leading role in turning the tide.
Not by preaching. By entertaining.
I'd never seen 'Grey's Anatomy' before watching the heat wave episodes; soap operas aren't really my thing. But the long-running ABC drama got me invested right away. The characters are sympathetic, the dialogue sharp and funny, the medical plotlines rife with tension. And I was impressed by how the writers kept the heat front of mind: a coffee cart running out of cold drinks, patients fanning themselves, several references to cooling centers.
In one of the final scenes of the two-episode arc, which concluded in March, surgical resident Ben Warren (Jason George) says the hospital needs an emergency plan for heat domes. It isn't prepared for wildfires, either.
'They're only increasing with climate change,' he says.
Some of you may be thinking: Who cares about a bunch of fake doctors running around a fake hospital? We have real climate problems in the real world. Trump and congressional Republicans are eviscerating clean air rules and revoking clean energy grants. Let's focus on politics and policy, not pop culture.
Thing is, people don't form opinions in a vacuum. The media we consume inform our politics — fiction included.
Studies have shown, for instance, that the sitcom 'Will & Grace' reduced prejudice against gay men, and that on-screen violence can increase the risk of violent behavior. Researchers found that a scene from HBO's 'Sex and the City' reboot 'And Just Like That ...' made viewers more likely to say eating less meat is good for the environment.
Millions of people watch 'Grey's Anatomy.' The impact is clear to producer Zoanne Clack, an emergency medicine physician who spoke at the Hollywood Climate Summit this month.
'In the ER, I could tell two people about diabetes. They might tell two people, and they might tell two people,' she said. 'But I do a story on [diabetes] on 'Grey's Anatomy,' and 20 million people have seen it.'
'And if 10% of those people get something out of it, that's a lot of people,' she added.
Already, researchers are studying viewer responses to the heat dome storyline. The conservation nonprofit Rare surveyed 3,600 people, showing some participants the first heat episode and others an unrelated episode.
Although the study isn't done yet, Anirudh Tiwathia, Rare's director of behavioral science for entertainment, told me it's clear that viewers came away from the heat episode more concerned and better-informed about extreme heat. The nonprofit is still testing whether those effects persisted several weeks after watching.
Rare also showed some viewers the heat dome episode plus a social media video reiterating the health dangers of extreme heat. Those viewers may come away even more informed. Rare released a study last year finding that people who watched 'Don't Look Up' — a disaster movie with intentional climate parallels — were far more likely to support climate action if they also watched a climate-focused video starring lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
'People see stuff on screen, and then they see stuff on the second screen,' Tiwathia said, referring to phones and laptops. 'The second screen is an opportunity to really pick up the baton from the main narrative.'
The videos used by Rare for its 'Grey's Anatomy' study were commissioned by Action for the Climate Emergency, which paid social media influencers to create 21 videos tied to the show. Rare chose four videos, including one by a gardener with 234,000 Instagram followers and one by an artist with 2 million followers.
A survey by Action for the Climate Emergency found that social media users who saw the videos were more likely than typical 'Grey's Anatomy' viewers to understand the links between heat, health and global warming.
'It's an opportunity for us to reach outside the echo chamber,' said Leah Qusba, the group's chief executive.
Fortunately, there's a small-but-growing ecosystem within Hollywood that's increasingly able to support this kind of partnership. A few major studios have started teams to advise creatives on climate storytelling. Environmental groups, consulting firms and universities have stepped up to provide expertise and research.
The 'Grey's Anatomy' heat dome storyline might not have happened except for Adam Umhoefer, an executive at the CAA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Creative Artists Agency, one of Hollywood's top talent agencies. He co-founded Green Screen, an effort to connect CAA clients and others in the industry to sustainability experts.
'The idea is that I'm kind of operating as an agent for climate,' Umhoefer told me.
When Umhoefer heard from a friend in the 'Grey's Anatomy' writers' room that the writers were looking to tell a climate story — after ending Season 20 with a massive wildfire — he connected them with the Natural Resources Defense Council, whose Rewrite the Future initiative consults with studios to improve climate storytelling.
'We were very interested in continuing that [fire] story, and the effect on the community of Seattle,' showrunner Meg Marinis said at the Hollywood Climate Summit. 'We just didn't want to pretend that never existed.'
To foreshadow the heat dome, they started the season with climate protesters blocking a bridge, causing several characters to get stuck in traffic. One of them, Link (Chris Carmack), scolds his partner Jo (Camilla Luddington) for getting annoyed, since the protesters are fighting for a worthy cause. Tick populations are exploding, he reminds her, increasing the risk of Lyme disease. And the last 10 years have been the 10 hottest on record globally.
'When Camilla and Chris Carmack were in that car, it was like 95 degrees near Long Beach. ... They were putting ice packs on their heads in between takes,' Marinis said. 'It was all very relatable. We were all living through it.'
Lived experience aside, it's hard to know how much appetite entertainment executives will have for more climate stories while Trump is in office. He's flouted democratic norms by threatening and even pursuing lawsuits against media companies that irk him, including Paramount, Comcast and the Walt Disney Co., which owns ABC.
But the fossil fuel industry won't stop winning the culture wars, and thus the political wars, until a much broader segment of the American public demands climate solutions, now. Hollywood can help make it happen.
The folks behind 'Grey's Anatomy,' at least, say they aren't planning to back down. Stay tuned.

‘If you're a fascist, then get a Tesla': Neil Young's new album takes potshots Elon Musk

After weighing in behind Bruce Springsteen in his internationally reported takedown of President Trump's government onstage at Manchester Arena last month, this other left-leaning giant of American rock from the 1970s voiced fears that he, having been a consistent critic of Trump, chiefly over the issue of climate-change denial, may face problems regaining entry to his home nation following his European tour this summer. At this febrile moment, one might've expected Young, now 79, and as outspoken as ever – he made headlines last year after apparently refusing to sign up for Glastonbury 2025 on account of its BBC-driven corporatisation (he now appears to be headlining on Saturday night!) – to fill his latest long-player, his 46th studio outing, with polemical rantings, but as any long-standing fan knows, Young remains creatively wilful, and rarely serves up what might be expected of him at a given time. In recent years, he has been deluging the collector's market with archival releases, many of them 'new' old albums which he shelved years ago. In amongst all that, however, interested parties may be forgiven for not having noticed that Young had found a productive groove with a reconstituted line-up of his beloved, amps-on-11 backing band, Crazy Horse, releasing three new records with them, culminating with 2022's Rick Rubin-produced World Record. There, on Chevrolet, this unflagging automobile enthusiast wrung his hands about lusting after a vintage gas-guzzler. Further back, around his investment in a hybrid-electric model Lincoln, he wrote at length about the driver's responsibility to their children's health and survival on 2009's Fork In The Road, and perhaps the most immediately ear-catching moment on Talkin To The Trees arrives on Let's Roll Again, where, against clanging electric guitar chords, he urges America's automobile manufacturing giants, by name – Ford, GM and Chrysler – 'to build us something useful, something that won't kill our kids – come on America, let's roll again…on down the highway'. Alongside that responsible, depoliticised messaging, Young suddenly seems to find it hard to avoid needling at the Trump administration. 'China's way ahead, they're building clean cars,' he adds, knowing the mention of China will not be music to the president's ears. 'C'mon America, let's cover our backs, protect our children,' he goes on, before taking a clear potshot at Elon Musk. 'If you're a fascist, then get a Tesla: if it's electric then it doesn't matter. If you're a democrat: then chase your freedom, get whatever you want and taste your freedom.' Behind those words, of course, Young easily could've ramped up explicit themes of political dissent. Instead, his mind seems to be focused on enjoying the natural wonders of his ranch in Northern California, as well as, in the track Family Life, the domestic happiness he finds surrounded by his children and grandkids as he writes songs, and sings them for their approval, ' and also 'singing for my best wife ever, the best cook in the world' – a great review, indeed, for Darryl Hannah, the movie actor and activist, whom he married in 2018. Though second track Dark Mirage finds his 'new' band The Chrome Hearts – a mutation of his other one of late, Promise of the Real, with master soul keyboardist Spooner Oldham added – squalling into fierce feedback, as Young momentarily dips into lingering anger from his mid-'10s divorce – by and large, The Chrome Hearts are entrusted with summoning the kind of golden country-rock sound usually associated with Young's Harvest series – rustling acoustic guitars, blissful ivory-tinkling topped with Neil's wheezing harmonica, which light up rustic gems like First Fire Of Winter, the exquisite title track and the warm-hearted Thankful, As such, there's so much to enjoy here for long-standing fans – a mellow soundtrack perhaps for the four-wheel pilgrimage down to Glastonbury, with some fittingly thought-provoking messaging on automotive responsibility going forwards. In a week that has seen the passing of two of Young's West Coast peers, it's great to hear him sounding invigorated, domestically happy and creatively on song. Andrew Perry Prior to a brace of covers albums in 2023, it's fair to say that Belfast singer Van Morrison was in his 'late life super-grumpy' phase. Railing against everything from lockdown to scientists, he didn't hold back. My personal favourite from this era was a 2021 song called Why Are You on Facebook?, which contained the lines 'Why do you need second-hand friends? … Get a life.' And this from the sage who gave us Into The Mystic. Well, Van the Man is back doing what he does best. Remembering Now, his 47th album, is 14 songs of beautiful and reflective music addressing aging, romance and a sense of yearning for the landscapes and landmarks that made us who we are. It's 64 minutes of soulful blues and country folk, augmented by string arrangements by Fiachra Trench, who wrote the string parts for The Pogues' Fairytale of New York and worked with Morrison on his 1989 classic Avalon Sunset, to which Remembering Now can easily be compared. Folk star Seth Lakeman adds violin to three tracks. The album opens with Down to Joy, which soundtracked Kenneth Branagh's 2021 film Belfast and was nominated for a 'best original song' Oscar (Morrison lost out to Billie Eilish's Bond theme). Once In A Lifetime Feelings is one of three tracks with lyrics by Don Black, who's written for everyone from Meat Loaf to Michael Jackson. The song finds Morrison driving down to Monte Carlo with 'so much to say' to a loved one. It's fantastic. Stomping Ground sees the 79-year-old pleading to return to Belfast, while the closing nine-minute Stretching Out is simply swooning. The highlight is Haven't Lost My Sense of Wonder, which has touches of the awe that late songwriter Bill Fay saw in the world as he aged. 'Had my fill, 'cause I've been through the mill/ Now I'm saying 'Peace, be still,'' Morrison sings over lavish gospel-tinged soul. Under (hopefully) sunny skies, these songs will sound a treat when Morrison supports Neil Young in Hyde Park next month (along with Yusuf/ Cat Stevens). A lush return to form. Why Is Everyone Mad at One of Our Biggest Pop Stars? It's Complicated.

I wonder what ever happened to the Twitter user who niche-famously posted last fall about being '17 and AFRAID of Sabrina Carpenter.' Are they now head of DOGE or some other important government agency? Whatever the case (the user seems to have deactivated for the time being, at least), their worldview has been ascendant over the past year, because Carpenter has found herself at the center of controversy again, this one about her yet-to-be-released new album. And this time, being afraid of the pint-sized pop star seems less and less like a fringe position. Sabrina Carpenter shared the news on Thursday that she will release her next album, Man's Best Friend, later this summer. Two photos accompanied the announcement, but most people haven't said much about the one of a dog wearing a collar with Man's Best Friend engraved on it, focusing instead on the artwork that features Carpenter herself wearing a short dress and heels and kneeling in front of a figure in a dark suit whose head is out of frame. She's not quite on all fours—sorry, Miranda July!—but she's got one arm on the floor and one reaching, like a dog doing its best handshake trick, toward what is presumably a man, who is meanwhile grabbing and holding up some strands of her blond hair. At the risk of outing myself as a prude, I'm going to admit that my first reaction to the image wasn't to chuckle to myself and marvel at another clever move from my girl Sabrina. No, I was kind of put off by it, to be honest. In contrast to Carpenter's past year of perfectly pitched visuals marrying bubblegum and bawdy, this photo is undeniably darker and more suggestive. I even thought of that HBO series from a couple years ago, The Idol, which I may be cursed to be one of the only people who remembers: There's a moment in one episode when a music-industry character suggests making lemonade of a public relations fiasco that the pop musician at the center of the show has become embroiled in due to a fairly explicit leaked picture of her. 'I would take that photo with the fucking cum on her face and I'd make it her album cover,' proposes the creative director, winkingly played by Troye Sivan, who is himself a pop artist. Carpenter's album cover isn't going nearly that far, as it's blessedly free of body fluids, but at the same time I don't think it would be a stretch to call the image softcore, or at least softcore-adjacent. I wasn't alone in my visceral reaction, and the photo has quickly proved to be a veritable discourse magnet. In comments under Carpenter's Instagram post and elsewhere online, some fans immediately bristled at the singer's subservient pose. Even after my own response, I was surprised by how overwhelmingly negative much of it was. The main problem, as fans and detractors saw it, was that Carpenter was catering to what they called 'the male gaze'—attempting to appeal to men and generally objectifying and debasing herself. Many made a point of gesturing to our current political climate in their critiques, talking about how it was particularly offensive to roll out an image like this at a time when women's rights are being rolled back and messages like 'Her Body, My Choice' are on the rise. Despite my qualms, I don't actually want to be on the side of a bunch of puriteens, so I'm glad some fans and observers stepped in to defend Carpenter, arguing that she's being playful and satirizing the public's view of her and men's treatment of women. Like many of them, I worry that we're at risk of bullying women so hard for the sin of 'being male-centered' that we loop back around to shaming them for being at all sexual. It's not fair for us to expect female pop stars to embody some corny notion of empowerment, and I'm also glad Carpenter isn't giving us an album cover as nonsensically boring as the one Gracie Abrams put out last year, which I'm still mad about. I think it's possible, conveniently enough for me, that both factions may have it a little wrong here. I certainly think it would behoove the people hating on the cover image to learn more about the origins of the phrase 'the male gaze,' for one thing. But I also think some of the defenses of Carpenter have been a little too quick to champion an image that isn't landing successfully for a reason. I generally find Carpenter's 'horned-up gal' persona charming: I thought it was hilarious, for instance, and not at all inappropriate, when she made an Eiffel Tower visual joke at her recent tour stop in Paris. A lot of what Carpenter is doing with the character she's playing when she's performing is subtle and strangely difficult to articulate—what for another person might look like an elaborate play for male attention plays differently when it's something that tiny, silly-mannered Carpenter is enacting for an audience of primarily women. I guess those of us, like me, who enjoy this act of Carpenter's are susceptible to feeling worried that she's going to drop it in favor of something more overtly sexual, because that's what this new kind of imagery has frequently signaled in the past. Thinking about it more, the photography style, evocative of an era with some pretty regrettable sexual politics, is a big part of why. As others have pointed out, the aesthetic is pure Terry Richardson and American Apparel—Carpenter may be dressed like a 2020s office siren, but I know indie sleaze when I see it. It's impossible to see the hair grab outside of the context of our overly pornified culture. But I would also argue that the album cover is just flat-out less funny than Carpenter's usual antics. I like how goofy and exaggerated the Carpenter I've gotten to know is; that doesn't mean she shouldn't evolve, but it's understandable that Carpenter going from carrying herself like a sexy cartoon bunny to channeling Maggie Gyllenhaal in Secretary is going to inspire a little whiplash. It's totally OK that this specific image isn't landing for some of us, and I find the impulse of some people to basically start a crusade against Carpenter as an enemy of women over this troubling. Messy rollouts are one of the dangers of being a pop star and a woman in the public eye, something Carpenter knows all too well. Ironically, just as she revealed this album cover this week, Rolling Stone published a new cover story about her, and in it she spoke about how much emphasis the public puts on the sexier aspects of her persona. 'It's always so funny to me when people complain,' she said in the Rolling Stone piece. 'They're like, 'All she does is sing about this.' But those are the songs that you've made popular. Clearly you love sex. You're obsessed with it. It's in my show. There's so many more moments than the 'Juno' positions, but those are the ones you post every night and comment on. I can't control that. If you come to the show, you'll [also] hear the ballads, you'll hear the more introspective numbers.' She has a point—it's true that we could all just choose not to talk about this. (Like that's ever stopped anyone on the internet.) In the same interview, Carpenter spoke of now feeling pressure to be funny. Maybe the most generous interpretation of this cover, then, is just that it was a misfire, an attempt at satire that only sticks out because of how weirdly perfectly Carpenter has managed to pull off a very hard-to-pull-off tone for the better part of the past year. We'll never know, at least until she comes out with a vetted public statement, or her new album reveals precisely where she's taking her image next. I know it's easy to be paranoid, and I'm paranoid too that Carpenter's reign of being a subversive bimbo genius is going to give way to something flatter and defanged of its bite. But she deserves more credit than that for all the genuinely tricky feats she's accomplished so far. That's that her espresso, and it hasn't truly failed us yet.

This Raunchy New Comedy Just Hit Netflix's Top 10—And Yes, I Laughed Out Loud at the Trailer

In a sea of true-crime docs and dark thrillers, sometimes you just want to watch something that won't leave you triple-checking your locks before bed. If you're anything like me, you're always on the hunt for something light, funny and a little ridiculous to balance out the heavy stuff. And clearly, I'm not alone—because one of Netflix's current Top 10 shows is a comedy series called Tires and it's already sitting pretty at number thress. Created by Shane Gillis, Steve Gerben and John McKeever, Tires is exactly what it sounds like—a workplace comedy set in a struggling auto repair shop. The plot centers on Will (Gerben), who's doing his best to manage one of the family-owned shops in the 'Valley Forge Automotive Center' chain. His plans to turn the business around hit a major speed bump when he hires his cousin Shane (Gillis), who immediately makes it his mission to turn the place—and Will's life—into total chaos. Think The Office, if Michael Scott was even less filtered and the HR department just… didn't exist. Courtesy of Netflix Now, fair warning: this isn't your standard sitcom. Tires is TV-MA and earns every bit of that rating. The trailer alone is filled with raunchy one-liners and awkward moments that toe the line between "OMG did he just say that?" and genuine laugh-out-loud humor. And honestly? It works. I caught myself actually laughing more than once, which isn't always a given with this style of comedy. Another major plus: there are already two seasons available to stream. Season two just dropped on June 5 and, yes, all of the episodes were released at once—no need to wait week by week (thank you, Netflix). With a solid 90 percent on the audience score (aka the Rotten Tomatoes PopcornMeter) and enough absurd workplace antics to keep you entertained without overthinking it, Tires might just be your next easy, hilarious watch.
