7.6% drop in scam calls spurs expanded national effort as PDRM and Whoscall target 1 million more Malaysians
Following early signs of progress in reducing scam calls across Malaysia, Whoscall is proud to announce the return of its nationwide anti-scam initiative, Scam Free Malaysia 2025, in continued partnership with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). Local Fishermen Should Benefit From BDIFIP Project
BAGAN DATUK, June 14 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called for deep-sea resource harvesting licences under the Bagan Datuk International Fishery Industrial Park (BDIFIP) to be awarded to local communities, especially those from Perak. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said the Fisheries Department could work with Menteri Besar Incorporated (MB Inc) to identify potential local operators who could be granted licences under the RM2 billion project. The Bagan Datuk MP added that he would work with financial institutions to ensure eligible fishermen receive assistance or loans, thereby ensuring that the benefits of the project are shared fairly between foreign investors and the local community. 'This is how we create balance, so that Malaysians, especially those in Perak, are not left with just low-paying jobs of RM1,700, watching others benefit from the project,' he said at the BDIFIP pre-launch ceremony here today. He also expressed hope that local workers at BDIFIP would not be paid minimum wages while foreign investors offer significantly higher salaries for similar roles in their home countries. 'Do not exploit the hard work of our local youth. Fair wages must be ensured, especially for those with skills and the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM). 'I will personally monitor the progress of this industrial zone and ensure all timelines are fully met,' he said. At the event, Ahmad Zahid also witnessed the exchange of an agreement between MB Inc. Perak and Younchang Engineering & Construction (M) Sdn Bhd, as well as the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between Younchang Engineering and MingCheng Group Co Ltd, paving the way for broader international collaboration in the project's investment ecosystem. Earlier, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the BDIFIP project, involving investments of more than RM2 billion, will be developed in phases starting in 2027 across a 126.4-hectare site. NTW 2025 records over two million participants
KUALA LUMPUR — The 2025 National Training Week (NTW), held to promote greater participation in skills training among Malaysians, has recorded over two million participants, exceeding its initial one million target. Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong said the third edition of NTW offered more than 71,000 free courses nationwide, conducted physically, online and in hybrid formats, from today until June 21. 'More than 41 per cent of the courses are related to Industry 4.0. To improve the people's skills in this area, the Human Resources Ministry (KESUMA) collaborated with the Ministry of Education (MOE) to implement the AI-4-Educators programme from April 7 to June 12. 'This is to train nearly 400,000 educators in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for teaching techniques, skills and related issues such as ethics, so that frontliners in our human capital development sector are equipped with the knowledge and skills to face the challenges of the AI era,' he said when speaking at the NTW ceremony at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium here today. The AI-4-Educators programme, comprising five self-training modules covering the use of AI in teaching, accessibility and ethics, has been recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records for recording the largest participation of educators in an AI training programme. Sim said the government had allocated about RM10 billion for skills development, of which 30 per cent came from levies imposed on private companies to train their employees. 'KESUMA is aware that with such a large financial allocation, the strategy must be aligned with current needs so that the people can benefit from it. Therefore, last year we introduced the MyMahir portal, which helps not only government agencies and private companies but also individuals to make informed decisions on skills development plans based on economic criteria. 'In this first year, KESUMA found that our trainees earned an average salary that was 12 per cent higher than the general market average. This programme will be expanded more aggressively so that more workers benefit from the MADANI Government's investment in skills development,' he said. Meanwhile, the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp), in a statement, said that among the popular courses during NTW 2025 were Neurodiversity Virtual Training, Cyber Security Threat Management (CSTM), ChatGPT Malaysia Community: Malaysia's Premier AI Learning Platform, Drone Flying Skills for New Pilots, Tax Planning for Individuals 2025, and Generative AI For Everyone. Kota Kinabalu: Warisan Vice President Datuk Junz Wong urged the Federal Government to reconsider the decision to expand the Sales and Service Tax (SST) regime starting July 1, reminding that the move will impose unnecessary hardship on businesses and consumers, especially in Sabah. In a statement, he questioned the rationale behind implementing such a far-reaching policy with less than three weeks' notice, calling it 'abrupt and confusing.' Advertisement 'The government must explain why this drastic SST expansion is being rushed through. What is the urgency? Why weren't businesses given more time to adapt? Many don't even know what is taxed at 5 per cent, 10 per cent, or exempted,' said Wong. 'And we all know what happens next whereas ruthless and clueless merchants will simply apply the highest tax rate across their product range, passing the burden to consumers and families.' He stressed that Sabahans do not support the expansion of the SST regime and called for it to be reviewed immediately. Wong also questioned the fiscal position of the Madani Government. 'Is our government so cash-strapped that it now needs to extract more money from the people and SMEs?' he asked. 'Malaysians are suffering for years of covid post effects, yet now rakyat and businesses must carry the burden.' Wong further warned that Malaysia risks losing its business-friendly reputation in the region. 'This SST regime, combined with already burdensome regulations and tax compliance, is making Malaysia an expensive country to do business in,' he said. 'How do we expect to remain competitive in Asean when others are streamlining their systems and lowering costs while we keep adding more layers of taxation and red tape?'
