Teamsters, Stop & Shop reach tentative agreement to avoid strikes

Yahoo01-03-2025

Teamsters Local 25 and Stop & Shop announced on Friday they've reached a tentative agreement on a new contract for employees at a Massachusetts distribution center, avoiding a strike.
'Stop & Shop tried to strong-arm our members by pushing a nonunion, substandard company health care plan, but our members refused to be intimidated by the company's corporate threats,' said Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien. 'We fought back against Stop & Shop's corporate greed and sent a clear message that our members will not be bullied into accepting anything less than what they are worth.'
The tentative agreement is for six years for associates at Stop & Shop's distribution center in Freetown, according to officials. The pending ratification would save more than 900 union jobs.
'I am thrilled that we were able to work together on a new contract that both provides an outstanding package of wages and benefits to our associates and supports us in our strategy of improving the customer experience by reducing operating costs,' said Roger Wheeler, President of Stop & Shop.
President of Teamsters Local 25 Thomas G. Mari said, 'The final agreement not only contained significant increases in wages and working conditions but also provided job security to more than 900 Teamsters for the foreseeable future.'
Elected officials, including Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey, also pressured the company to negotiate in good faith and protect these essential jobs.
'I am proud to have stood with the Teamsters to ensure these good-paying union jobs stay in Massachusetts,' Healey said. 'Keeping the Freetown distribution center open while securing strong wages and benefits is a win for these workers and our entire state.'
The contract also delivers the largest economic gains ever negotiated for Stop & Shop Teamsters. New hires will receive an 80 percent wage increase over the length of the agreement, while veteran workers will see an over 30 percent raise. In addition, the agreement preserves top-tier Teamsters health care, significantly increases pension contributions, and ensures the long-term operation of the Freetown facility.
'We held Stop & Shop accountable and secured one of the strongest contracts in the supermarket industry,' said Tom Mari, President of Local 25. 'I want to thank our members for their strength, our UFCW allies for their unwavering solidarity, and the community for standing with us. This victory shows what happens when workers refuse to back down.'

Ex-prisoners welcome second chance at jobs fair

A jobs fair at an East Sussex prison was described as "life-changing" by a former inmate. Frazer Trought, who is on licence after serving 10 years in prison for conspiracy to supply Class A drugs, said he was offered a job after a previous event. He said: "They empowered me to prove my worth by giving me responsibility and allowing me to work hard and prove myself as a reliable employee." BBC South East was given exclusive access to the HMP Lewes Careers Day, organised by Balfour Beatty, where businesses offer career mentoring as part of wider efforts to reduce re-offending. Mr Trought said: "When I was in prison, I had a lot of time to think about my actions and the repercussions were catastrophic for my family, friends and society." He said the support he received from a previous Balfour Beatty jobs fair helped him turn his life around and secured a job with Triplex. John Burton was previously jailed for drug importation, tax evasion and money laundering, and released in 2017. He said: "Crime doesn't pay, you will get caught. While I was in prison I said to myself I must get rehabilitated because I wanted to support myself and my family." He has a company, Inside Connections, which is now managed by his children. Mr Burton said his family had never been involved in crime and he was determined to turn his life around for them. Imogen Emmerson, who is a prison employment lead for HM Prison and Probation Service, said jobs were "key to rehabilitation". "We see most offenders who go into work within the first six months don't re-offend," she added. Ms Emmerson said while there is still stigma attached to former offenders, but some employers are prepared to take the initial risk and give them a chance. "A lot of prisoners are keen to work and they are doing it for reasons other than earning a pay cheque," she added. "They want to show they have the motivation to turn their lives around. We see stable employment as a game-changer for their confidence." Ms Emmerson said there had been more than 100 job offers via career fairs. Ceri Turner, the social impact manager for Balfour Beatty Living Places, said it was beneficial for businesses to employ former prisoners as the country has an ageing workforce. "We recognise people deserve a second chance and there is commercial value in having a diverse team in the company," she added. Follow BBC Sussex on Facebook, on X, and on Instagram. Facebook and Instagram owner Meta to enable AI ad creation by end of next year

The owner of Facebook and Instagram is to help advertisers to fully create and target campaigns using artificial intelligence tools by the end of next year, in a move that sent shock waves through the traditional marketing industry. Mark Zuckerberg's Meta, which also owns WhatsApp, aims to directly target brands' marketing budgets, posing a threat to the advertising and media agencies that handle client campaigns and budgets. The AI tools under development, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, will allow brands using Meta's advertising platform to create ads using a product image and a planned marketing spend. Related: What to do if you can't get into your Facebook or Instagram account Meta's platform already offers some AI tools that allow advertisers to tweak existing ads before they appear on Facebook and Instagram. However, the new tools could disintermediate the traditional advertising creation, planning and buying roles played by agencies, as well as open up a long tail of advertisers with small budgets that cannot afford to retain marketing services companies. The AI tools would create the entire ad – including imagery, video and text – and also target it to users in line with a client's budget. Targeting such as geolocation would enable an advertisement for a holiday company, for example, to be tailored to offer deals specifically related to users' likely destinations of interest. Investors quickly sold off some of the world's largest marketing services as news of Meta's planned AI rollout, which could significantly swell the $160bn (£118bn) the company already makes annually from advertising, emerged on Monday. Shares in WPP dropped 3% in early trading, while the French companies Publicis Groupe and Havas suffered 3.9% and 3% falls respectively. Zuckerberg, who is heavily focused on driving AI-powered advertising, has referred to the development of new tools as 'a redefinition of the category of advertising'. In April, Meta updated its outlook on spending for the next year with plans to invest between $64bn and $72bn in capital expenditure, including the cost of building out AI infrastructure. The company had originally said it expected to spend up to $65bn in 2025. Meta has said that ramping up its AI capability for brands is not a move to kill off traditional agencies. 'We believe in the future of agencies,' said Alex Schultz, the chief marketing officer and vice-president of analytics at Meta, in a recent post on LinkedIn. 'We believe AI will enable agencies and advertisers to focus precious time and resources on the creativity that matters. While we think there will ultimately be more automation in marketing, the role that agencies play is going to become ever more important through their ability to plan, execute and measure across platforms.' However, Schultz added that AI tools would help 'level the playing field' for small and medium-sized businesses that do not have the time or financial scale to use agencies. 'Millions of small businesses rely upon our platform to grow,' he said. 'For these businesses who aren't able to work with an agency, or don't have time during their busy days to think about their creative or targeting, that's where AI can help level the playing field.'
