UN coordinator urges swift justice five years after Beirut blast
United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, renewed calls for accountability on the fifth anniversary of the Beirut Port explosion, warning that the absence of justice continues to deepen the tragedy. 'Five years on, tragedy and pain are compounded by the glaring absence of justice,' Hennis-Plasschaert said in a statement Monday. 'Survivors and victims, and their families, deserve full accountability. And, they deserve it now.' Her remarks follow a meeting last week with families of several victims of the 2020 blast, which killed more than 200 people, injured thousands, and leveled entire neighborhoods in the capital. While noting recent signs of progress in the stalled investigation, the U.N. envoy urged the Lebanese government to 'take all necessary action' to advance judicial proceedings. She also welcomed Parliament's recent passage of the Judicial Independence Law, calling it a key step toward rebuilding public trust in state institutions.

On Beirut blast anniversary, President Aoun vows justice ‘no matter how high the rank'
President Joseph Aoun marked the fifth anniversary of the 2020 Beirut Port explosion with a renewed pledge to pursue justice, declaring that accountability remains a top priority for the Lebanese state. In a statement released Monday, Aoun said Lebanon is committed to uncovering the full truth 'regardless of the obstacles or how high the rank of those involved.' He added, 'Justice makes no exceptions, and the law applies to all without discrimination.' The explosion, which killed over 200 people, injured thousands, and devastated large parts of Beirut, has yet to see significant accountability. The investigation has faced repeated political interference and years-long delays. Standing by victims' families, Aoun vowed that 'justice will not die' and that 'reckoning is inevitable.' 'I made a promise when I took office that holding those responsible for this national tragedy—whether through negligence, misconduct, or corruption—would be a top priority,' he said. 'We will continue to pressure all relevant authorities to deliver justice, no matter their position or affiliation.' Addressing families of the victims directly, Aoun said, 'Your loved ones' blood will not have been shed in vain. Your pain will not go unanswered.' He also praised the solidarity shown by the Lebanese people in the aftermath of the blast. 'The same spirit that brought us together to lift the rubble and care for the wounded will carry us toward justice and rebuilding our nation on the foundations of transparency and accountability.'

PM Salam: No justice for the Beirut Port explosion without truth and accountability
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam affirmed during a dialogue session on the aftermath of the August 4 Beirut Port explosion that there can be no settlement at the expense of justice, and that this national wound cannot heal without uncovering the truth and holding those responsible accountable. 'There is no reform without accountability,' Salam said. 'A state of law is built where the independence of decisions is safeguarded. A fair trial is a duty of the state and a right for the victims, and we must commit to passing the law on judicial independence.' He stressed that without justice, there is no meaning to citizenship and no purpose for the state, adding, 'Justice, even if delayed, must ultimately be achieved.'
