Kansas coach Bill Self underwent heart procedure after experiencing ‘concerning symptoms'
Self, who underwent a heart procedure, is expected to make a full recovery and is set to be released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital 'soon.'
'Kansas men's basketball coach Bill Self felt unwell and experienced some concerning symptoms Thursday,' Kansas said in a statement. 'He was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he had two stents inserted.

'The procedure went very well, and he is expected to make a full recovery. He is in good spirits and expects to be released from the hospital soon.'
Self was also hospitalized midway through the 2023 season because of a blockage in his arteries, where the 62-year-old had a standard heart catheterization and two stents placed.
The longtime Jayhawks coach responded well to that procedure, according to the University of Kansas Health System.
Self's most recent hospitalization comes amid a busy offseason for Kansas after a disappointing season in which the Jayhawks got bounced in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Self said his program has started to take a different approach regarding acquiring talent from the transfer portal this year by shifting away from the traditional rankings.
'It seemed like, to me, this year we emphasized more not what other people thought of rankings and stuff like that,' Self told 247Sports this week. 'Not that that was our emphasis before, but the appearance is, 'Well, you go out and get the guys that are the highest rated guys that are in the portal,' which is good. You get Hunter. That's a great get.
'But I think the emphasis was more on what we needed to do to allow us to play as athletic and to play the style that best suits us and best fits me for winning, and I think we were actually able to do that.'

US health officials crack down on kratom-related products after complaints from supplement industry
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. health officials are warning Americans about the risks of an opioid-like ingredient increasingly added to energy drinks, gummies and supplements sold at gas stations and convenience stores, recommending a nationwide ban. The chemical, known as 7- hydroxymitragynine , is a component of kratom , a plant native to Southeast Asia that has gained popularity in the U.S. as an unapproved treatment for pain, anxiety and drug dependence. In recent months, dietary supplement companies that sell kratom have been urging the Food and Drug Administration to crack down on the products containing 7-OH, portraying them as dangerously strong, synthetic versions of the original ingredient. The FDA action 'is not focused on natural kratom leaf products,' according to a statement Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The agency said it was releasing a report to educate about the risks of '7-OH and its distinction from the kratom plant leaf.' Regulators are also recommending that the ingredient be placed on the federal government's most restrictive list of illegal drugs, which also includes LSD and heroin. '7-OH is an opioid that can be more potent than morphine,' said FDA Commissioner Marty Makary. 'We need regulation and public education to prevent another wave of the opioid epidemic.' The agency's recommendation will be reviewed by the Drug Enforcement Administration, which sets federal rules for high-risk drugs including prescription medicines and illicit substances. Federal regulators have been scrutinizing kratom for about a decade after reports of addiction, injury and overdose. But users and distributors have long opposed efforts to regulate it, saying kratom could be a safer alternative to opioid painkillers that sparked the ongoing drug addiction epidemic. Last month, the FDA issued warning letters to seven companies selling drinks, gummies and powders infused with the drug. Regulators said the products violated FDA rules because they have not been evaluated for safety and, in some cases, claimed to treat medical conditions, including pain, arthritis and anxiety. Supplement executives quickly applauded the move. The FDA 'demonstrated the exact kind of data-driven, proactive regulatory excellence needed to safeguard unwitting consumers across the U.S.,' said Ryan Niddel of Diversified Botanics, a Utah-based company that sells kratom supplements. An industry group, the American Kratom Association, has lobbied Congress for years against restrictions on the plant. Legislation supported by the group would prohibit the FDA from regulating kratom more strictly than food and dietary supplements Nearly a decade ago, the federal government came close to a national ban on the substance. In 2016, the DEA announced plans to add kratom to the government's most restrictive schedule 1 of illegal drugs. But the plan stalled after a flood of public complaints, including a letter signed by more than 60 members of Congress. The FDA then began studying the ingredient, concluding in 2018 that kratom contains many of the same chemicals as opioids, the addictive class of drugs that includes painkillers like OxyContin as well as heroin and fentanyl. Since then, FDA regulators have continued to issue warnings about cases of injury, addiction and death with kratom supplements, which are usually sold in capsules or powders. In recent months, the FDA has also issued warnings on other unapproved drugs sold as supplements or energy drinks, including the antidepressant tianeptine . Tadej Pogačar skips Spanish Vuelta to recover from Tour de France triumph
PARIS (AP) — Four-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogačar has decided against taking part in the Spanish Vuelta next month as he recovers after winning cycling's biggest race. 'After such a demanding Tour, we decided it was best to take a break,' Pogačar said. 'The Vuelta is of course a race I would dearly love to return to. I have fantastic memories there from 2019 (finishing third), but now the body is telling me to rest.' The Slovenian rider from the UAE Team Emirates-XRG was not included in the eight-man squad for the Vuelta, which will start on Aug. 23. The team will be led by Portuguese rider João Almeida — who retired from the Tour earlier this month after fracturing a rib — and Spain's Juan Ayuso. After doing the Giro d'Italia and Tour double last year, Pogačar had planned to ride both the Tour and the Vuelta this summer. 'The idea this year was for Tadej to return to the Vuelta, but the season has been a long one for him,' the team's sports manager Matxin Fernández said. "We spoke and agreed that the best thing for him now is to take a good rest and build up to his final season goals.' It has already been a long season for Pogačar, a versatile rider known for his unsatiable appetite for victory. In addition to his Tour title, he also won the Critérium du Dauphiné, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the Flèche Wallonne and Strade Bianche this year. On the way to his fourth Tour title, Pogačar won four stages to take his Tour tally to 21, and 30 at major races, including six at the Giro d'Italia and three at the Vuelta.
