World Aquatics Championships: Qin Haiyang wins China's first swim gold in 100m breaststroke

Qin Haiyang was crowned the men's 100m breaststroke world champion on Monday, winning China their first gold medal in swimming events at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.

And in the women's 200m individual medley final, China's swimming prodigy, the 12-year-old Yu Zidi, finished fourth and missed out on a bronze medal by 0.06 seconds.
Qin's medal and Yu's impressive performance were silver linings in what was a largely disappointing day for Chinese swimmers, as big names missed out on podiums and failed to progress to finals.
'This definitely helps with confidence,' Qin said. 'I'm competing in three events, and they're all tough ones. Even if I didn't win gold today, I've done better than yesterday, and that's enough for me.
'In the last 10m, we were all spent; maybe this was when my technique gave me a little bit of an advantage.'

Qin was trailing in the first 75m of the race to Italian Olympic champion Nicolo Martinenghi, but rallied to come home in 58.23 seconds. Martinenghi came second in 58.58, and Kyrgyzstan's Denis Petrashov claimed bronze in 58.88 seconds.

Yu fifth fastest in 200m butterfly heats after official says she should not be competing

China's Yu Zidi eased into the finals of the women's 200-metre butterfly at the World Aquatics Championships on Wednesday, hours after a German official questioned whether she should even have been allowed to take part. The 12-year-old's time of two minutes, 08.95 seconds was the fifth fastest in the morning's heats in Singapore, with Canada's Summer McIntosh leading the way in 2:07.07. McIntosh has already bagged two gold medals in Singapore and she is looking to join Phelps as the only swimmer to win five individual titles at a single world championships. Yu finished fourth behind McIntosh in the 200m IM final on Monday. On Tuesday, Christian Hansmann said Yu's participation at the championships was 'questionable' because of an official age limit of 14. 'There are rules that should apply for everyone. If you make an exception here based on performance then I don't consider it a good idea,' Hansmann, German federation board member for high performance sport, said. 'First of all not for sporting reasons, but also to protect the youth – or better the child at 12 years.'

Quan Hongchan skipped the World Aquatics Championships. Where is China's diving ace?

As China continues to dominate diving at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, one glaring omission is three-time Olympic champion Quan Hongchan. Advertisement Quan was originally listed in the squad to compete at the world championships, but had to withdraw because of what she called 'a serious ankle' injury. While her teammates continued the country's long-held diving domination, picking up seven from a possible eight golds in Singapore, Quan has returned to training, vowing to come back for the 15th National Games in Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macau. However, a video of Quan being unable to complete an exercise in training sparked discussion on Weibo this week as to whether she is capable of remaining among the very best. A hashtag related to the video and her recovery has been viewed more than 70 million times. World Aquatics Championships: China's divers win 2 more golds as swimmers win a bronze

Chinese divers again won two golds in the water at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore on Tuesday, while Tang Qianting failed to defend her 100m breaststroke crown. Advertisement The pick of diving action came in the men's 10m platform synchronised event, when China's Cheng Zilong and Zhu Zifeng stole first place, winning by just 0.93 points, as they claimed a total of 429.63. Neutral athletes Nikita Shleikher and Ruslan Ternovoi won silver with 428.70 points, while Americans Carson Tyler and Joshua Hedberg were third with 410.70 points. 'We believed in each other,' Cheng said. 'During our training, we didn't really have that many issues, so we just trusted each other. I trusted in Zhu [for the final two dives] and I trusted that we would be able to close it out.' Cheng and Zhu scored 60.18 for their third dive, the lowest points awarded in that round, but Shleikher and Ternovoi could put up only 76.68 in their final dive and had to watch as the Chinese pair hit 90.72 to reclaim the top spot.
